| Sister Ancilla. |
Sister Ancilla Dent, OSB, who died 15 October, 2025, aged 92, in the 66th year of her monastic profession, was a co-heir to the ancient barony of Furnivall, a peerage dating back to 1295.
She was born Rosamond Mary Dent, 3 June, 1933, the elder daughter of William Herbert Shelley Dent, MC (1895-1981), descended maternally from the Shelley baronets, and his wife Mary Frances Katherine Petre, suo jure Baroness Furnivall (born 27 May, 1900).
Rosamond Dent entered St Mildred's Abbey near Ramsgate, circa 1959, and took the name Sister Ancilla.
The abeyance of the barony of Furnivall, having existed since 1777, was terminated in favour of her mother, 3 May, 1913, and with her death, 24 December, 1968, the ancient English barony once again fell into abeyance between Sister Ancilla and her younger sister, the Hon Patricia Mary Dent (born 4 April, 1935).
Upon the death of Sister Ancilla the abeyance of the Barony of Furnivall is automatically terminated and her younger sister succeeds as Baroness Furnivall.
Patricia Dent married firstly, 25 Aug, 1956 (div. 1963), Capt. Thomas Hornsby (1924-1967); and married 2ndly, 1970, Roger Thomas John Bence (1939-2017). The 20th Baroness Furnivall has issue from both marriages. From her first marriage she has a son, the Hon Walton Petre Hornsby (born 21 Apr, 1958), and a daughter the Hon Clare Mary Petre Hornsby (born 25 Jan, 1957), and from her second marriage she has a son, the Hon Richard William Petre Bence (born 1976), and a daughter the Hon Katharine Rosamond Petre Bence (born 1971).
