Princess Désirée of Sweden, Baroness Silfverschiöld 1938-2026

 Princess Désirée of Sweden, Baroness Silfverschiöld, sister of King Carl Gustav, died 21 January, 2026. She was 87.

Princess Desiree Elizabeth Sibylla was born in Stockholm, 2 June, 1938, third daughter of Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Vasterbotten (1906-1947) and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1908-1972) who were both descended from sons of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and Prince Albert (1819-1861).

Princess Desiree's paternal grandparents were King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden (1882-1973) and Princess Margaret Victoria Charlotte Augusta Norah of Connaught and Strathearn (1882-1920).  Princess Margaret's father,  Field Marshal HRH The Prince Arthur, 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942), was Queen Victoria's third son.

Princess Desiree's maternal grandfather was Prince Charles Edward, 2nd Duke of Albany.  His father, Prince Leopold George Duncan Albert, 1st Duke of Albany (1853-1884), was the youngest son of Queen Victoria.

She was a third cousin once removed of HM King Charles III.

Princess Désirée survived her third cousin, Princess Irene of Greece & Denmark, by six days.

Princess Désirée married 5 June, 1964, Niels-August Otto Carl Nicolas Silfverschiöld, Baron Silfverschiöld (1934-2017), son of Baron Carl-Otto Silfverschiöld (1899–1955) and Elsa Madeleine Bennich (1906–1994). His paternal grandfather, Baron Otto Silfverschiöld (1871–1951), was a member of the Riksdag and his paternal grandmother, Ingeborg von Horn (1873–1953), was the sister of novelist Brita von Horn and aunt of Generalmajor Carl von Horn.

Princess Désirée leaves issue, Baron Carl Otto Edmund Silfverschiöld (born 22 March 1965), Baroness Christina-Louise Ewa Madelaine Silfverschiöld (born 29 September 1966), and Baroness Hélène Ingeborg Sibylla Silfverschiöld (born 20 September 1968)
