The 4th Baron Kershaw 1936-2026

 The 4th Baron Kershaw, a peer for 63 years, died 4 January, 2026. He was 89.

Edward John Kershaw was born 12 May, 1936, son of the then Edward Aubrey Kershaw (born 29 August, 1906), and his wife the former Katharine Dorothea Staines, daughter of Charles H Staines, of Clapham, London. 

His grandfather, Fred Kershaw, OBE (1881-1961), was a Labour party politician, created a peer in 1947, as Baron Kershaw, of Prestwich in the County Palatine of Lancaster, who later served as a Lord-in-waiting in the Labour government of Clement Attlee, 1945-51. 

On the demise of the first Baron, 5 Feb, 1961, the peerage descended to his eldest son, Herbert (1904-1961), the 2nd peer, who died without male issue five months later, 18 July, 1961, when he was succeeded by his younger brother, Edward Aubrey, 3td Baron, who died six months after succeeding, 22 February, 1962.

The 4th Baron married 20 July,l 1963, Rosalind Lilian Rutherford, 2nd daughter of Ian Strachan Rutherford, of Castlegate, Richmond-on-Thames, co. Surrey, by whom he had issue, a son, John, and two daughters, Victoria and Isobel.

His son, the Hon John Charles Edward Kershaw, born 23 December, 1971, succeeds to the peerage.
