Mary Countess of Gainsborough 1925-2018

-.Mary Countess of Gainsborough, who died 30 December, 2018, aged 93, was the widow of the 5th Earl of Gainsborough (1923-2009), of Exton, Leicestershire, and was a scion of the Barons Mowbray, Segrave & Stourton.

She was born Mary Stourton, 24 Sept, 1925, a daughter of Maj the Hon John Stourton (1899-1992), byh his first wife the former Kathleen Alice Gunther; & she was a granddaughter of the 24th Baron Mowbray.

She married 23 July, 1947, Anthony Gerard Edward Noel, 6th Earl of Gainsborough, a descendant of King William IV and the actress Dorothea Jordan. He died 29 December, 2009.

The countess was mother of eight children, including the 7th Earl, born in 1950, and a daughter Lady Juliana, who married the 5th Earl of Liverpool.

He was born in 1977, son of Hugh John Wordsworth Pelly (born 1945), by his wife the former Jane Mary Fergusson (born 1949), scion of that landed gentry family;

Jonathan Martin Edwin Sandys 1975-2018

_. Jonathan Martin Edwin Sandys, who died 29 December, 2018, in a London hospital, was a great-grandson of the Rt Hon Winston Churchill, KG, Prime Minister 1940-45, and 1951-55.

He was born in 1975 a son of the Hon Julian George Winston Sandys, QC (1936-97), by his wife the former Elisabeth Jane Martin (b 1943), and was a grandson of the Rt Hon Duncan Sandys, life peer as Baron Duncan-Sandys (1908-87), by his first wife Diana Spencer-Churchill (1909-63), daughter of Sir Winston Churchill by his wife the former Clementine Hozier.


Jonathan Sandys was married his American wife Sara, and settled in Houston, Texas, and leaves a widow and two children.

Peter Denis Hill-Wood 1936-2018

_. Peter Denis Hill-Wood, who died 28 December, 2018, was a scion of the Hill-Wood baronets.

Mr Hill-Wood was chairman of Arsenal Football Club.

He was born 25 February, 1936, son of Denis Hill-Wood (died 1982), and a grandson of Samuel Hill-Wood, MP.

Peter's mother, the former Mary Smith, was a granddaughter of Sir Everard Hambro, of the eponymous merchant banking dynasty; married 1971, Sally Andrews, by whom he had two sons and a daughter.

William Charles Mullenger Sawyer (born 2018)

_.Elizabeth Jane Cecil Sawyer (nee Brassey, born 1978), wife of Nicholas Charles Mullenger Sawyer (born 1977), gave birth to a son, William Charles Mullenger, 28 December, 2018, a brother for Eleanor, who was born 2015.

Nicholas Sawyer is a son of David R M Sawyer (b 1941) by his wife the former (Heather) Wilma E Davies (b 1941).

Elizabeth Sawyer is a daughter of Linda Pinnock and granddaughter of Lt-Col Hon Peter Esme Brassey (1907-95) by his wife the former Lady Romayne Elizabeth Algitha Cecil, OBE (1915-2001), d of 5th Marquess of Exeter KG (1876-1956).

_. The Dowager Countess Bathurst, widow of the 8th Earl, died 27 December, 2018.

She was the former Gloria Wesley Clarry, daughter of Harold Edward Clarry (1893-1982), of Vancouver, Canada, by his wife the former Emmaline Florence Moore (1899-1986); she married firstly, 1965, David Francis Rutherston (1925-75); married secondly, 1978, Henry Allen John Bathurst, 8th Earl Bathurst (1927-2011).

The funeral will take place at St Kenelm's Church, Sapperton, 11 January, 2019.

Professor Sir Peter Swinnerton-Dyer, 16th Baronet, KBE 1927-2018

_. Professor Sir Peter Swinnerton-Dyer, 16th Baronet, KBE, FRS, Chief Executive of the Universities Funding Council 1989-91; academic; sometime Master of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, died 26 December, 2018, aged 91.

Henry Peter Francis Swinnerton-Dyer was born 2 Aug, 1927, son of Sir Leonard Swinnerton Dyer, 15th Bt, by his wife the former Barbara Brackenbury (died 1990), daughter of Hereward Brackenbury, CBE; succeeded to the baronetcy (created in 1678) on his father's demise, 1975.

Sir Peter married 1983, Dr Harriet Crawford, archaeologist, the elder dau of the Rt Hon Sir Patrick Browne, OBE, TD, PC, no issue of the marriage.

Sir Peter was appointed KBE in 1987. FRS, 1967.

The baronetcy now passes to a distant kinsman, David Dyer-Bennett (born 1954), of Minneapolis, United States, descended from the third son of the 9th baronet.

Sir Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, GCVO, 10th Baronet 1926-2018

_. Sir Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, GCVO, 10th Baronet, late Major the Grenadier Guards and Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian, died 26 December, 2018, aged 92.

Hew Fleetwood Hamilton-Dalrymple was born 9 April, 1926, son of Sir Hew Clifford Hamilton-Dalrymple, 9th Baronet (1889-1959), by his wife the former Dorothea Dyce Nicol Thorne (1893-1979); married 1954, the Lady Anne-Louise Mary Keppel (1932-2017), daughter of the 9th Earl of Albemarle (1882-1979) by his second wife the former Diana Cicely Grove (1909-2009).

Sir Hew is survived by four sons.

He served as Captain General and Gold Stick, Queen's Body Guard for Scotland (Royal Company of Archers); appointed CVO (1974), KCVO (1985), and GCVO (2001). He was Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian  1987-2001.

Sir Hew is succeeded by his eldest son, Hew Richard Hamilton-Dalrymple, who was born 3 September, 1955.

The funeral Mass takes place at the Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, North Berwick, 4 January, 2019.

Horatio Cartwright-Hignett (born 2018)

_. Marianne Lucy Cartwright-Hignett (nee Edwards, born 1983), wife of William Fairfax Cartwright-Hignett (born 1982), gave birth to a son, Horatio, on Christmas Day, 2018.

William Cartwright-Hignett is a son of John Jeremy Worthington Hignett (b 1939), by his wife the former Elizabeth Armine Julia Cartwright (b 1939), a granddaughter maternally of the 1st Viscount Weir (1877-1959).

Baroness St Helens (died 2018)

_. The Baroness St Henens, who died in London, 26 December, 2018, aged 66, was the wife of Richard Francis Hughes-Young, 2nd Baron Saint Helens (born 1945).

The former Emma Rosemary Lyle, she married 22 Sept, 1983, as the then Mrs Emma Talbot-Smith, the Baron St Helens, who had succeeded his father, 27 Dec, 1980.

Lady St Helens is survived by her husband and by a son, Henry, and a daughter, Lara.

Funeral Service on Thursday, 10 January 2019, at St Peter & St Paul, Shiplake.

Hon Robin Heneage Finch Hatton 1939-2018

_, The Hon Robin Heneage Finch Hatton, who died Christmas Day, 2018, was a scion of the Earls of Winchilsea & Nottingham.

He was born in 1939, a younger son of the 15th Earl of Winchilsea (1911-50), by his first wife the former Countess Gladys Széchényi (1913-78), and was a grandson maternally of Gladys Moore Vanderbilt (1886-1965), scion of that prominent U.S. dynasty; married 1962, Molly Iona (born 1940), daughter of Colonel Palgrave Dawson Turner Powell, MBE TD (1897-1975), by whom he had four children.

The funeral service takes place at St Peter's Church, Slinfold, 25 January, 2019.

Sophie Sybella Strathern Chevenix Trench, who died 24 December, 2018, aged 89, was a descendant of the Kleinwort baronets; born in 1929, daughter of Air Chief Marshal Sir Douglas Evill (1892-1971), by his wife the former Henrietta Hortense Kleinwort (1893-1980); married 1957, Maj Reginald Allan Chenenix Trench (1920-2018), scion of that landed gentry family, by whom she had issue, Ivo, Angus, Kate and Jessica.

Joan Lady Nixon (died 2018)

._Lady Nixon, who died 23 December, 2018, aged 99, was the widow of Sir Christopher Nixon, 3rd Baronet, MC (1918-78).

She was the former Joan Lucille Mary Brown, daughter of Robert Felix Mervyn Brown, of Rangoon, Burma, and married Maj Sir Christopher in 1949. She was widowed in 1978, and is survived by three daughters, Anne, Mary and Sally,

 Requiem mass at St Edward's Catholic Church, Sutton Park, Guildford, Wednesday 16th January 2019.

_. Emma Louise Elliot Monckton (nee Baxter, born 1988), wife of Edward Gervase Monckton (born 1988), scion of the viscounts Monckton of Brenchley, gave birth to a son, Angus Gilbert Ludovic Colyer, 23 December, 2018.

Lt Edward Monckton is a son of the Hon Anthony Monckton (b 1960), by his wife the former Philippa Susan Wingfield (b 1962), scion of the viscounts Powerscourt.

Emma Monckton, scion of the Scots landed gentry family of that name, is a daughter of Angus Baxter (born 1956), by his wife the former Julie Teresa Tatham, descended from the Barons Digby.

_. The Baron Ashdown of Norton Sub-Hamdon, CH, GCMG, KBE, PC, died 22 December, 2018, aged 77.

Lord Ashdown, as the Rt Hon Paddy Ashdown, was Leader of the Liberal Democrats, 1988-99.

Jeremy John Durham Ashdown was born 27 Feb, 1941, son of John and Lois Ashdown; married 1962, Jane Courtenay, by whom he had one son and one daughter.

3rd Baron Tryon, OBE, DL 1940-2018

_. The 3rd Baron Tryon, OBE, DL, died at his home in Wiltshire, 22 December, 2018. He was 78.

Anthony George Merrik Tryon was born 26 May, 1940, son of the 2nd Baron Tryon, PC, GCVO, KCB, DSO (1906-76), by his wife the former Etheldreda Josephine Burrell (1909-2002), scion of the Burrell baronets; he married 1973, Dale Elizabeth Harper (1948-97), daughter of Henry Preston Barrington (Barry) Harper (1909-86), of Melbourne, Australia, by his wife the former Jean Irene McMurray-Wallace, by whom he had two sons and two daughters.

Lord Tryon was educated at Eton, served as a Page of Honour to Queen Elizabeth II, 1954-56; Captain Wessex Yeomanry, 1972; Director of Lazard Brothers and Co, 1976-83; appointed OBE, 2001.

He is succeeded in his peerage (created in 1940), by his eldest son, the Hon Charles George Barrington Tryon, who was born 15 May, 1976.  Charles is a godson of the Prince of Wales and also served as a Page of Honour to the Queen.

The funeral takes place at St Andrew's Church, Great Durnford, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, 7 January, 2019.

She was born Charmaine Elizabeth Violet Cecilia Wilson, 4 August, 1930, daughter of the 3rd Baron Nunburnholme (1904-74), by his first wife the former Lady Mary Beatrice Thynne (1903-74), Lady of the Bedchamber to HM Queen Elizabeth, 1937-47, third daughter of the 5th Marquess of Bath.

She married 19 January, 1957, William Rippon Bissill (died 1983), by whom she had issue.

The funeral takes place at St Thomas Church, Aslockton, Nottinghamshire, 21 December, 2018.

Robin Helen (Bobbie) Parsons (died 2018)

_. Robin Helen (Bobbie) Parsons, who died 15th December, 2018, was the first wife of the late 10th Baron Braybrooke (1932-2017).

She was the former Robin Helen Brockhoff, daughter of Thomas Adolph Brockhoff, of Rose Bay, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, and married 29 July, 1955 (div 1974) as his first wife, the then Hon Robin Henry Charles Neville, son of the 9th Baron Braybrooke (1897-1990).

Her husband succeeded as 10th Baron Braybrooke, 12 Feb 1990, and died 5 June, 2017. She married secondly, Christopher Parsons (deceased), of Bath, Avon.

Bobbie Parsons is survived by four daughters from her marriage to Lord Braybrooke. A fifth daughter predeceased her in 1980. Her second daughter, the Hon Caroline (Cazzy) Neville, married in 1995, the 19th Earl of Derby.

The funeral takes place at the Abbey Church of St Mary and St Melor, Amesbury, 8 January, 2019.

Lady Ulick Browne (died 2018)

_.  Lady Ulick Browne, who died 18 December, 2018, aged 84, was the mother of the 12th Marquess of Sligo.

She was the former Fiona Glenn, daughter of John Glenn, of East Grinstead, Surrey and married 1962, Capt Lord Ulick Browne (1915-79), a younger brother of the 10th Marquess of Sligo. Her husband was granted the rank and precedence of the younger son of a Marquess, in 1953.

Lady Ulick Browne is survived by her son Sebastian, who succeeded his cousin as 12th Marquess of Sligo, in 2014, and a daughter, Ulicia.

A Memorial Service takers place at St Mary The Boltons, London, 11 January, 2019.

Robin Alexander Craig Linzee Gordon 1930-2018

_. Robin Linzee Gordon died 17 December, 2018, aged 88. He was born 25 Oct, 1930, son of Commodore Robert Gordon Hood Linzee (1900-73), by his wife the former Hon Ellinor Aileen Cecil Craig (1907-78), daughter of the 1st Viscount Craigavon (1871-1940), who, as James Craig, was Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.


Mary Helena Kenyon-Slaney 1932-2018

_. Mary Helena Kenyon-Slaney, who died 12 December, 2018, aged 86, was the wife of (William) Simon Rodolph Kenyon-Slaney (born 1932), a former High Sheriff of Shropshire, scion of the Barons Kenyon.

She was born in 1932, Mary Helena Bridgeman, scion of the Earls of Bradford, a daughter of the Hon Henry George Orlando Bridgeman (1882-1972), by his wife the former Joan Constable-Maxwell (died 1991), scion of the Lords Herries of Terregles.

She was a granddaughter of the 4th Earl of Bradford. She married Simon Kenyon-Slaney in 1960, by whom she had issue.

Hon Amelie Mary Tanya Shirley (born 2018)

_. Camilla Shirley, styled Viscountess Tamworth (b 1985), wife of William Robert Charles Shirley, styled Viscount Tamworth (b 10 Dec, 1984), gave birth to a daughter, the Hon Amelie Mary Tanya, 11 December, 2018, a sister for the Hon Francesca Alice Hermione, who was born 7 June, 2016.
 
Viscount Tamworth is the elder son and heir of Robert William Saswalo Shirley, 14th Earl Ferrers (b 29 Dec 1952), of Ditchingham Hall, Norfolk, by his wife the former Susannah Mary Sheepshanks.
 
Viscountess Tamworth is the former Camilla Lutyens, descended from the Earls of Lovelace, yst dau of the late Richard David Lutyens (b 1 Jul 1948- d. 1994), and Mrs Richard Lutyens (nee Mary A.J.P. Drabble), of Kensington, London.

_. Claire E. Lubbock (nee Felgate), wife of Richard Christopher Sinclair Lubbock (born 1983), scion of the Barons Avebury (Baron UK, cr 1900), gave birth to a son, Leo James Christopher, 11 December, 2018.

Richard Lubbock is the only son of (Rupert) James Gordon Lubbock (born 1948), of Wandsworth, London, by his wife the former Miranda Jane McNeile.

Claire Lubbock is the eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs Malcolm Felgate, of Cape Town, South Africa.

Maddison is the eldest child of Jeremy Alexander Rothwell Brudenell (born 2 April, 1960) by his former wife the former Edwina Victoria Louise Hicks (born 24 December, 1961), daughter of David Nightingale Hicks (1929-98) by his wife the Lady Pamela Carmen Louise Mountbatten (born 19 Apr, 1929), younger daughter of Admiral of the   Fleet the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900-79).

Shirley Lady Codrington (died 2018)

_. Shirley Lady Codrington, who died 12 December, 2018, was the fourth, and final wife of Sir Simon Codrington, 3rd Baronet (1923-2005).

She was the former Shirley Ann Davis, born circa 1943, daughter of Percival Lionel Davis, and married 1989, Sir Simon Francis Bethell Codrington, 3rd Baronet. Her husband died 17 August, 2005, aged 82.

Service at Haycombe Crematorium, Bath, 28 January, 2019.
