Sheila Viscountess Knutsford 1927-2018

The Viscountess Knutsford, who died 6 December, 2018, aged 91, was the wife of the 6th Viscount Knutsford.

She was born the Hon Sheila Constance Portman, 25 June, 1927, a daughter of the 5th Viscount Portman (1898-1942), by his wife the former Hon Sybil Mary Douglas-Pennant (1901-75), a scion of the Barons Penrhyn; married  8 May, 1951, Michael Holland-Hibbert, 6th Viscount Knutsford (born 27 December, 1926) by whom she had issue.

 A Thanksgiving service takes place on Wednesday, 16 January 2019, at St John the Baptist Church, Aldenham, Hertfordshire.

Maj Richard James Gillow Reynolds 1933-2018

Maj. Richard James Gillow Reynolds, late the Irish Guards, who died 13 December, 2018, aged 84, was descended from the Reynolds baronets. His home was Leighton Hall, near Carnforth, Lancashire.

He was born 16 January, 1933, elder son of James Roskell Reynolds [1904-82], and his wife the former Helen Mary Gillow [1907-1977], scion of the Gillow landed family of Leighton Hall, who succeeded to the Leighton Hall estate on the death of her father, Charles Richard Gillow [1871-1923].

He married 30 April, 1968, [Caroline] Susan [Suzi] Kenyon, DL, daughter of Geoffrey Terence Kenyon, of London, by whom he had issue, two daughters, Katherine [born 14 May, 1971], and Lucy [born 1975].

The younger daughter, Lucy, wife of Daniel Arthurs, succeeded to Leighton Hall.

Shirley Lady Codrington (died 2018)

_. Shirley Lady Codrington, who died 12 December, 2018, was the fourth, and final wife of Sir Simon Codrington, 3rd Baronet (1923-2005).

She was the former Shirley Ann Davis, born circa 1943, daughter of Percival Lionel Davis, and married 1989, Sir Simon Francis Bethell Codrington, 3rd Baronet. Her husband died 17 August, 2005, aged 82.

Service at Haycombe Crematorium, Bath, 28 January, 2019.

Nina Cecily Hamilton Stubber (born 2018)

Camilla Julia Margaret Hamilton Stubber (nee Trotter, born 1983), wife of Henry James Hamilton Stubber (born 1984) scion of that landed gentry family, gave birth to a daughter, Nina Cecily, 13 November, 2018.

Henry Hamilton Stubber is a son of Mr James Hamilton Stubber, of Aughentaine, County Tyrone, by his wife the former Carola E. A. Savill.

Camilla Hamilton Stubber is a daughter of the late Martin Frederick Trotter (who d. 2009) by his wife  the former Georgina Lavinia Blunt (born 1945), daughter of Sir Richard Blunt, 11th Baronet.

Graham-Watson/France-Hayhurst engagement

The engagement was announced 12 December, 2018, between Florian Nicholas Graham-Watson (born 6 December, 1986) late the Irish Guards, sometime equerry to HRH The Duke of Cambridge, scion of the Graham-Watson landed gentry family, son of Mr Andrew FitzJames Graham-Watson (born 1957), of Longworth, Oxfordshire, by his wife the former Brigitte Jeanson, of Paris, & Serena, daughter of Mr & Mrs James France-Hayhurst, of Bunbury Heath, Cheshire.

The newly engaged couple had a son, Arnaud James, born 25 July, 2018.

Florian Graham-Watson was appointed Prince William’s equerry shortly after HRH took up his appointment as Royal Colonel of the Irish Guards.

The Duchess of Abercorn 1946-2018

Her Grace The Duchess of Abercorn, descendant of the Russian Tsars, close friend of the Duke of Edinburgh, died in London, 10 December, 2018. She was 72.

She was born Alexandra Anastasia Phillips, 27 February, 1946, in Arizona, the eldest daughter of Lt-Col Harold Pedro Joseph Phillips (1909-80), of Checkenden Court, Reading, by his wife the former Georgina Wernher, a great friend of the Queen, daughter of Sir Harold Wernher, 3rd Baronet, of Luton Hoo, by his wife Countess Anastasia (Zia) de Torby, daughter of HIH Grand Duke Michael of Russia.

Zia Wernher was granted by Royal Warrant, 1 Sept, 1917, the style and precedence of the daughter of an Earl. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh shared the racing interests of Lady Zia, and for a number of years they celebrated their wedding anniversary at Luton Hoo.

Alexandra’s father, Harold Phillips, was a cousin of Janet Mercedes Bryce, who married the 3rd Marquess of Milford Haven, best man at the wedding of the Queen and Prince Philip.

Sarah Bradford in her biography of the Queen states that Sacha Abercorn was Earl Mountbatten of Burma’s ‘favourite goddaughter.’ Her godmother was Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent.

Alexandra, known as Sacha, had one brother, Nicholas, a year her junior, who inherited Luton Hoo, the Wernher family seat in Bedfordshire, and committed suicide in 1991.

She had three sisters, Fiona, Marita and Natalia. The youngest of the sisters married, in 1979, Gerald Grosvenor, the 6th Duke of Westminster.

She married 20 October, 1966, in the presence of the Queen, James Hamilton, styled Marquess of Hamilton, who was born in 1934, and succeeded his father in 1979 as 5th Duke of Abercorn.

The duke was a Lord Steward of the Household to the Queen, and appointed a Knight of the Garter in  1999.

The Duchess’s home was Barons Court, County Tyrone. She is survived by the duke, and by two sons and a daughter.

The private funeral will be followed by a memorial service in the Spring of 2019.


Michael David Carrick-Buchanan of Drumpellier & Corsewall (1939-2018)

Michael David Carrick-Buchanan of Drumpellier and Corsewall, head of that Scots landed
 family, died 3 December, 2018, aged 79.

He was born 6 Nov, 1939 son of David Richard Carrick-Buchanan, of Drumpellier, Coatbridge, and Corsewall, near Stranraer; by his wife the former Cinderella Beatrix Staveley, scion of that landed family of Stainley Hall, North Yorkshire,

He married in 1965, Jytte, daughter of Kat Simonsen, of Virun, Denmark, by whom he had issue.

Mr Carrick-Buchanan traced his ancestry to the lairds of Buchanan in the 15th century.

George Hovell-Thurlow-Cumming-Bruce (born 2018)

The Hon Joanna Hovell-Thurlow-Cumming-Bruce (born 1985, nee Heriot Maitland), scion of the Earls of Lauderdale, and wife of the Hon Nicholas Hovell-Thurlow-Cumming-Bruce (born 16 February, 1986), scion of the Barons Thurlow, gave birth to a son, George, 18 November, 2018.

The Hon Nicholas Cumming-Bruce is the son and heir of the 9th Baron Thurlow (born 1952), and the infant George is heir to his father.

Joanna Cumming-Bruce is a daughter of Patrick Heriot-Maitland.

The Cumming-Bruces have a daughter, Isla, born in 2016.

Claudia Iveigh D’Oyly More Nisbett (born 2018)

Charlotte More Nisbett (nee Davison) wife of William More Nisbett, descended from the Earls of Stair, gave birth to a daughter, Claudia Iveigh D’Oyly, 3 December, 2018.

Lady Bennett, widow of Sir Reginald Bennett

Lady Bennett, who died 4 December, 2018, was the widow of Sir Reginald Bennett (1911-2000).

She was the former Henrietta Crane and married Reginald Frederick Brittain Bennett in 1947.

Her husband was Conservative MP for Gosport and Fareham 1950-74, and after boundary changes MP for Fareham, 1974-79.

Douglas George Alfred Hickman (born 2018)

_. Alicia Lorraine Hickman (nee Newson, born 1982), wife of Charles Patrick Alfred Hickman (born 1983), scion of the Hickman baronets, gave birth to a second son, Douglas George Alfred, 9 December, 2018, a brother for Hugh James Alfred, who was born in 2016.
Charles Hickman is the son and heir of Sir Richard Hickman, 4th Baronet (born 1949), by his wife the former Heather Mary Elizabeth Moffett.

Alicia Hickman is a daughter of Derek L. Newson (born 1948), by his wife the former Lorraine T. Griffin (born 1950).

7th Earl of Ranfurly 1929-2018

The Earl of Ranfurly died 4 December, 2018.He was 89.

Gerald Francoys Needham Knox was the 7th Earl
of Ranfurly, Viscount Northland, Baron Welles & Baron Ranfurly.

He was born 4 January, 1929, son of Capt John Needham Knox, RN (1890-1967) by his wife Monica, daughter of Maj-Gen Sir Gerald Kitson, KCVO, CB, CMG.

He married 22 Jan, 1955, Rosemary Beatrice Vesey Holt, the only daughter of Air Vice Marshal Felton Vesey Holt, CMG, DSO, RAF, by whom he had issue.

Succeeded to the peerages in 1988 on the death of his kinsman.

Lord Ranfurly is succeeded by his elder son Edward John Knox, styled Viscount Northland, who was born 21 May, 1957.

Copley (born 1989) son of Robert Copley, of London, descended from the Earls of Loudoun, and Mrs Diana Copley (nee Wingfield), of Great Barrington, Gloucestershire, a scion of the Viscounts Powerscourt, & Zoe Mary Manners (born 14 November, 1989), scion of the Barons Manners, eldest daughter of Charles Henry Manners (born 1957), of Woodend, Gloucestershire, by his wife the former Nichola Thompson.

The bride to be descends from the 1st Baron, a Solicitor General & Lord Chancellor of Ireland, who was a grandson of the 3rd Duke of Rutland.


Anne Marie, Baroness Lucas of Chilworth - obituary

Anne Marie, Baroness Lucas of Chilworth, who died 29 November, 2018, at Southampton, was the widow of Michael William George Lucas, 2nd Baron Lucas of Chilworth (1926-2001).

She was the former Anne Marie Buck, and married 9 June, 1955. She is the mother of the 3rd Baron.


Hon Mrs Nancy Henniker-Major 1919-2018

The Hon Mrs Nancy Henniker-Major, who died 2 December, 2018, aged 99, was the widow of the Hon Richard Arthur Otway Henniker-Major (1917-2003), scion of the Barons Henniker.

She was born 10 July, 1919, a daughter of Sir John Stainton by his wife the former Hon Janet Dewar (1895-1979), daughter of the 1st Baron Forteviot, of the Dewar whisky distilling family.

She married 22 June, 1946, the Hon Richard (Dick) Henniker-Major, son of the 7th Baron Henniker, by whom she had issue.

The funeral tales place at the Church of St Peter & St Paul, Pulborough.

Hon Charlotte Mary Mansell-Jones 1947-2018

The Hon Charlotte Mansell-Jones, who died 20 November, 2018, aged 71, was a scion of the Barons Piercy.

She was born Charlotte Mary Piercy, 24 May, 1947, eldest daughter of the 2nd Baron Piercy (1918-91), of Elford, Staffordshire,  by his wife the former Oonagh Lavinia Baylay, a descendant of the Earls of Lucan.

She married firstly, 14 Nov, 1966 (div 1985) Paolo Emilio Taddei, fifth son of Enrico Taddei, of Florence, by whom she had a son, Guido, and daughter, Caroline; married secondly, 1985, William Guy David Ropner (1924-2015), scion of the Ropner baronets, by whom she had a son, Nicholas; married thirdly, 29 Oct, 2018, Richard Mansell-Jones (born 1940).

Cecilia Lady Dugdale (1931-2018)

Cecilia Lady Dugdale, who died 4 December, 2018, aged 87, was the widow of Sir William Dugdale, 2nd Baronet, CBE, MC (1922-2014), and was aunt of the former prime minister, David Cameron.

She was born Cecilia Mary Mount in 1931, daughter of Lieut-Col. Sir William Malcolm Mount, 2nd Baronet (1904-93) by his wife the former Elizabeth Llewellyn (1904-94); her younger sister, Mary, born in 1934, is David Cameron’s mother.

She married in 1967, as his second wife, Sir William Dugdale, Bt, of Blyth Hall, Coleshill, Birmingham, & 24 Bryanston Mews, W1, sometime chairman of Aston Villa Football Club, by whom she had a son, Thomas, and daughter, Adelaide.

The funeral takes place at the Church of Our Lady, Mereval, Atherstone, 19 Dec, 2018.

Belinda Baroness Somerleyton, OBE (1939-2018)

Belinda Baroness Somerleyton, OBE, who died 1 December, 2018, aged 79, was the former chatelaine of Somerleyton Hall, the Italianate mansion near Lowestoft, Suffolk.

She was the fomer Belinda Loyd, born in 1939, a daughter of Vivian Graham Loyd, MC (1894-1972), by his wife the former Phyllis Mary Tringham (1907-97); married 1963, Savile William Francis Crossley, 3rd Baron Somerleyton, GCVO (1928-2012), of Somerleyton Hall, Lowestoft, by whom she had a son, Hugh (born 1971), the 4th Baron, and four daughters.

Her husband was a senior member of the Royal Household as Master of the Horse, 1991-99.
