Lord Clinton-Davis, PC, Labour life peer, a minister in the adminstrations of Sir Harold Wilson, Sir James Callaghan and Sir Tony Blair, died 11 June, 2023. He was 94.
Stanley Clinton Davis was born 6 Dec, 1928, son of Sidney & Lilly Davis. He served as Labour MP for Hackney Central, 1970-1983, & was European Commissioner in the Delors Commission (1985–1989).
From 1974 to 1979, he was as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Companies, Aviation and Shipping in the governments of Prime Ministers Harold Wilson and James Callaghan. Following the Conservative Party's victory in the 1979 general election, Davis remained on the Labour front bench as the Opposition Spokesman on Trade, Prices and Consumer Protection, 1979-81, and Foreign Affairs, 1981-83.
In 1990, he was raised to the peerage for life as Baron Clinton-Davis, of Hackney in the London Borough of Hackney,sitting on the Labour benches in the House of Lords until his retirement in 2018. He assumed the surname of Clinton-Davis in lieu of his patronymic on being ennobled.
In the Lords, Clinton-Davis served as Opposition Spokesman for Transport, 1990-97, and Supporting Spokesperson for Trade and Industry, 1990-96, and Foreign Affairs 1990-97. He was sworn of the Privy Council in 1998.
Following the Labour victory at the 1997 general election, Prime Minister Tony Blair decided to use the experience of a handful of former Labour ministers at the commencement of his New Labour project. Clinton-Davis was appointed as Minister of State for Trade, serving in the Department of Trade and Industry until 1998.
In 1954, he married Frances Jane Lucas; they had a son and three daughters.
