Sir David Brewer, KG, CMG, CVO, who died on his 83rd birthday, 28 May, 2023, was a former Lord Mayor of London, and Lord Lieutenant of Greater London.
His death brings the number of vacancies in the Order of the Garter to five.
David William Brewer was born 28 May, 1940. He was a marine insurance broker who served as Lord Mayor of London 2005-06, and Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, 2008-2015.
Brewer was a Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors as well as of the Blacksmiths' Company, and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Insurers; he was President of the London Cornish Association since 2005. Sir David was Chairman of the Central Council of the Royal Over-Seas League from 2017 until his death.
He married in 1985, Tessa Jordá, daughter of Enrique Jordá and formerly president of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. They had two daughters, Olivia and Gabriella. Lady Brewer was appointed OBE for her work as Chairwoman of the City of London Festival.
David Brewer was appointed CMG in 1999; Knighted in 2007; awarded the Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon of the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, in 2007; CVO in 2015; and on St George's Day 2016 he was appointed a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.
His death brings the number of vacancies in the Order of the Garter to five. The other vacancies in England's premier order of chivalry were caused by the deaths of Sir Timothy Colman (9 Sept, 2021), Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover (14 January, 2022), Lord Inge (20 July, 2022), and Lord Boyce (8 Nov, 2022).
