The Baron Sanderson of Bowden 1933-2026

The Baron Sanderson of Bowden, who died 2 July, 2026, aged 93, was a Scottish Conservative Party politician and a life peer.

He was a member of the House of Lords from 1985 until his retirement in 2018.

Charles Russell Sanderson was born 30 April, 1933, son of Charles Plummer Sanderson, and his wife the former Martha Evelyn Gardiner.

He was Chairman of Clydesdale Bank PLC 1999-2003, Deputy Chairman 1996-99, and in 2003, he was appointed Vice Lord Lieutenant of the Borders Region (Roxburgh, Ettrick & Lauderdale).

 He was knighted in 1981, and was created a life peer in 1985 as Baron Sanderson of Bowden, of Melrose in the District of Ettrick and Lauderdale and spoke regularly in the House of Lords. Bowden in his title is taken from a village in the Roxburghshire area of the Scottish Borders.

From 1987 to 1990 Lord Sanderson was a Minister of State in the Scottish Office, responsible for housing, agriculture and fisheries. He also served as Chairman of the Conservative Party in Scotland in the early 1990s.

Lord Sanderson retired from the House of Lords on 29 March 2018.

He married in 1958, Frances Elizabeth Macaulay, by whom he had issue, two sons and two daughters.
