The Hon Jeremy William Roxbee Cox, who has died aged 94, was a son of the life peer the Baron Kings Norton (1902-1997), a famed aeronautical engineer, who was notable for his contributions to British industry, particularly aeronautical engineering, and for his part in the establishment of Cranfield University.
Jeremy Roxbee Cox was BA, BPhil (Oxford), joined Lancaster University’s Department of Philosophy as lecturer on 1 October 1964, and later was promoted to senior lecturer. He spent more than 30 years at Lancaster University, during which time he was also an active member of Fylde College. He was a founding member of the Philosophy Department at Lancaster.
His first paper was published in 1955, in Analysis, titled: ‘Fitting and Matching: A note on Professor Austin’s ‘How to Talk’.’ Two other papers in Analysis followed: Are Perceptible Qualities ‘in’ Things? (1963), and Are there Non-Dispositional Properties? (1964); and one in Philosophical Quarterly, ‘Commending and describing’ (1961). The best known of his other papers include: ‘Can I know beforehand what I am going to decide?’, in Philosophical Review, and ‘Distinguishing the senses’ in Mind. In his final publication he co-edited, with John Benson and Betty Redfern the complete collection of Frank Sibley’s papers on philosophical aesthetics: Approach to Aesthetics: collected papers on philosophical aesthetics (OUP 2001).
He married in 1962, Anne Linton, by whom he had a son and a daughter.
