The Hon (Nicholas) Adrian Oliver Lyttelton, who has died aged 89, was one of the leading historians of Italian fascism. He was known above all for his ground breaking study of the origins and early development of the fascist movement, The Seizure of Power: Fascism in Italy, a work which, first published in 1973, remains the standard text for anyone approaching the subject today.
He was born 26 March, 1937, the third son of Oliver Lyttelton, 1st Viscout Chandos (1893-1972), Winston Churchill’s minister of production during the second world war, raised to the peerage in 1954, as the 1st Viscount Chandos.
His mother was Lady Moira Godolphin Osborne (1892-1976), daughter of George Osborne, the 10th Duke of Leeds (1862-1927).
He married 3 April, 1960, Margaret Hobson (1936-1993), daughter of Sir Harold Hobson, CBE (1904-1992), the drama critic and author, by whom he had issue, a son Francis (born 28 May, 1967), and a daughter, Celia (born 28 Oct, 1960).
Ge announced his engagement, 10 January, 2004, to the Hon Mrs Margaret Ann Lumley-Saville (nee Phillips), former wife of Peter Alexander Bruce, and widow of the Hon Henry Lumley-Savile, son of the 2nd Baron Savile.
