Nico James Morris-Eyton (born 14 Nov, 2024)

 Harriet Mae Morris-Eyton (nee Barber, born 1989), wife of Marcus Alexander Morris-Eyton [born 1989], scion of the Eyton landed gentry family, gave birth to a son, Nico James, 14 November, 2024, a brother for Willa Lucy, who was born 10 December, 2022.

Harriet is a  daughter of Paul R. Barber, of Well, Hampshire, and his wife the former Susan E. Rielly. Marcus Morris-Eyton is a son of Robert Anthony [Tony] Morris-Eyton, of Calvington, Shropshire, and his wife the former Clare Stuttaford [born 1960].

The Hon Emily Rose Hobbs (nee Arundell, born 1988), wife of Edward James Balfour Hobbs (born 1988), and scion of the Barons Talbot of Malahide, gave birth to a son, Felix George, in November, 2024, a brother for Marcus James Arundell, (born 2 December, 2017), for Crispin John Arundell (born 7 Dec, 2019), and for Jude Richard Arundell (born 4 Dec, 2022).

Edward Hobbs is the elder son of Mr & Mrs John Hobbs, of Wandsworth, London, & the Hon Emily Hobbs is the second of the four daughters of the  11th Baron Talbot of Malahide (born 28 Mar, 1957), by his wife the former Jane Catherine Unwin.

John George de la Poer Beresford 1927-2024

 John George De la Poer Beresford, who died 6 November, 2024, aged 97, was a scion of the Marquesses of Waterford.

He was born 9 Aug, 1927, son of George Henry William de la Poer Beresford (1904-1961), and his wife the former Mary Isobel Richardson; and married 17 September, 1960, Jeanne Frances Steward, daughter of William Steward, by whom he had issue, two sons, Stephen (born 19 Jul 1961), and Mark (1962-2024), and a daughter, Clare (born 16 Sept, 1964).

He second son, Mark, predeceased him, 31 May, 2024.

Morag Nada, Baroness Stafford 1932-2024

 Morag Nada, Baroness Stafford, who died 27 November, 2024, was the widow of the late 14th Baron Stafford, of Swynnerton Park, Staffordshire.

She was the former Morag Nada Campbell, a daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Alastaair Campbell of Altries (who died 1971), by his wife the former Aileen Emmet (1903-1969), and married 16 June, 1952, Basil Francis Nicholas Fitzherbert, 14th Baron Stafford b (7 April 1926) soldier, landowner, and peer, a member of the House of Lords for almost forty years. He succeeded to the peerage 28 Sept, 1941, and died 8 January, 1986.

Lady Stafford was the mother of six children, Aileen Mary (b 29 Mar1953), Francis Melfort William, 15th Baron Stafford (b 13 Mar 1954), Thomas Alastair (b 9 Aug 1955), Caroline Fiona (b 13 Aug 1956), Wendy Helen (b 28 Apr 1961), and Philip Basil (b 7 Oct 1962).

Sowler/Sater engagement

The engagement was announced 30 November, 2024, between Richard Mordaunt G.H. Sowler (born 1989), younger son of Mr and Mrs Richard Sowler, of Derbyhaven, Isle of Man, and the Hon Abigail Jacqueline Sater  (born 1990), daughter of Mr Mark and the Baroness Sater, of Buckland-tout-Saints, Devon.

Baroness Sater (born 21 June 1963) is a marketing executive, magistrate and life peer. She was nominated for a life peerage by Theresa May in May 2018. On 20 June, 2018, she was created Baroness Sater, of Kensington in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Katherine Louise (Katie) Flower (nee Thompson-Royds, born 1985), wife of the Hon Harry William Warburton Flower [born 11 January, 1977], gave birth to a daughter, Henrietta Zoë Gabrielle, 27 November, 2024.

Katie Flower is a daughter of Timothy Christopher Thompson-Royds [born 8 January, 1950], of Newnham, Northamptonshire, descended from the Thompson baronets, and his wife the former Anne Hedley [born 1959], descended from the Earls Waldegrave.

Emilie Charlotte Bacon (born 17 Nov, 2024)

 Camilla Emily Charlotte Bacon (née Carter, born 1991), wife of Thomas Castell Bacon [born 1992], scion of the Bacon baronets, gave birth to a daughter, Emilie Charlotte, 17 November, 2024, a sister for George Castell, who was born 30 June, 2023.

Thomas Bacon is the youngest son of Sir Nicholas Hickman Ponsonby Bacon, 14th and 15th Baronet [born 15 May, 1953] of Raveningham Hall, Norfolk, and his wife the former Susan Henrietta Dinnis.

Camilla Bacon is the younger daughter of Robert George Russell Carter, of Letheringsett, Norfolk, and his wife the former Charlotte M.L. Miller.

Sir Nicholas Hickman, who as a boy was a Page of Honour to the Queen, is England's Premier Baronet.

The Carters are members of the Prince and Princess of Wales's Norfolk circle, dubbed the 'Turnip toffs' by organs of the Press. Camilla's sister stood as a sponsor at Prince George's christening.

Camilla Carter's elder sister Sophie [born 14 Oct, 1982], is the wife of Robert Snuggs. The Waleses attended the wedding of Sophie and Robert Snuggs at Letheringsett, Norfolk, in September, 2018, and Princess Charlotte acted as a bridesmaid to her godmother. Prince George was a page boy. 

Sophie Snuggs gave birth to a daughter, Amalia Rose Charlotte, 21 June, 2019.

Capt David Crawford, of the Royal Scots Greys, died 25 November, 2024, aged 92.

He was born at Andover, Hampshire, in 1931, son of Brigadier Alistair Wardrop Euing Crawford (1896-1978), and his wife the former Helena Beatrice Dundas (1899-1977), daughter of Admiral Sir Charles Hope Dundas of Dundas, KCMG (1859-1924), 28th Chief of the Clan Dundas.

He married 25 May, 1963, the Lady Susanna Montgomerie (born 19 October, 1941), eldest daughter of the 17th Earl of Eglinton & (5th) Winton (1914-1966), and his wife the former Ursula Joan Watson (1916-1987), by whom he had issue, twin sons, Alexander and Daniel (born 21 March, 1967), and a daughter, Arabella (born 18 May, 1965).

 Robin Gilman Arculus died 18 November, 2024, aged 88.

He was born in 1936, son of Frederick Minshull Arculus (1897-1966), and his wife the former Joyce Marjorie Y. Gilman (1905-1981); and married 15 May, 1965, Caroline Sarah Turner (born 22 December, 1943), daughter of Lt-Col William Aspinall Turner (1904-1994), and his wife the former Hon Dorothy Joan Yerburgh (1913-1999), daughter of the 1st Baron Alvingham (1889-1955).

He leaves issue, two sons, James (born 1970), Henry (born 1974), and a daughter, Sophie Louise (born 1972).

George David Drummond Godwin-Austen 2003-2024

 George David Drummond Godwin-Austen, who died 24 November, 2024, aged 21, was a scion of that landed gentry family of Pirbright Manor.

He was born in 2003, the second son of Jonathan Reade Godwin-Austen (1962-2020), and his wife the former Mary Catherine Drummond Cavender (born 1961). He had an elder brother, Henry (born 1997), and a sister, Anne (born 2000)

Josceline Mary Hebblethwaite 1946-2024

 Josceline Mary Hebblethwaite, who died 4 November, 2024, aged 78, was descended paternally from the Phillimore family and maternally from the Roxby landed gentry family. 

She was born 7 January, 1946, the second daughter of Sir Henry Josceline Phillimore, PC (1910-1974), a Lord Justice of Appeal, by his first wife the former Katharine Mary Maude Roxby (1912-1984); and married firstly, 14 January, 1967 (div. 1980), Hugo David Montagu Morley-Fletcher (1940-2022), a maternal grandson of the 11th Marquess of Tweeddale, son of Lt-Col David Morley-Fletcher, OBE (1910-1971), and his wife the Lady Christine Daphne Hay (1919-2000); & married 2ndly, 5 November, 1988, Jeremy Hebblethwaite. From her first marriage she leaves issue, a son, Gifford (born 13 June, 1969), and a daughter, Hester (born 1972).

 Timothy Heathcote Unwin died 17 November, 2024.

He was born in 1934, at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, son of Wilfrid N. Unwin (1878-1967) and his wife the former Heather Grant (1903-1993).

He married in 1959, Primrose Priday (born 1936), daughter of Arthur Kenneth Priday (1890-1967), and his wife the former Mary Rose Cecilia Flora Bruton (1899--1982), by whom he had issue, three daughters, Jane (born 1961), Charlotte (born 1963), and Sophie (born 1965).

Tim's first daughter, Jane, married 29 Sept, 1984, the 11th Baron Talbot of Malahide (born 28 March, 1957). His second daughter, Charlotte, married in 1987, James Fitzroy Dean (born 4 Aug, 1954), descended maternally from the Barons Raglan. His third daughter, Sophie married in 1999, Charles Philip Chetwynd Miles (born 15 Oct, 1962), descended maternally from the 9th Viscount Chetwynd.

 The engagement was announced 27 November, 2024, between Benjamin George (Ben) Sharples (born c 1991), son of (Richard) Jeremy Andrew Sharples (born 1960), of East Horsley, Surrey, and his wife the former Beate Hubscher (born 1960), & Rose Olivia (Rosie) Fetherstonhaugh (born 15 July, 1992), scion of that landed gentry family, daughter of Guy Cuthbert Charles Fetherstonhaugh, KC (born 29 January, 1955), of Holland Park, London, and his wife the former Alexia Jane Musson (born 1966).

Rose Fetherstonhaugh is a barrister, following in the footsteps of her father, Guy, who was called to the Bar in 1983, is a member of the Chancery Bar Association and the London Common Law and Commercial Bar Association, a Bencher of Inner Temple, & Honorary Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

Ann Myers (née Gambier Parry) 1919-2024

 Ann Myers, who died 20 November, 2024, aged 105, was a scion of the Gambier-Parry landed gentry family.

She was born in 1919, a daughter of Major General Michael Denman Gambier-Parry, MC (1891-1976), and his wife the former Barbara Evelyn Tufnell (1894-1977); and married in 1946, Major Denis Falke Myers (1914-1989), by whom she had issue, a son Christopher (born 1958), and a daughter, Elizabeth (born 1947).

Memorial service for Lady Saltoun

 A Service of Thanksgiving was held at St Peter’s Episcopal Church, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, 25 November, 2024, for the Lady Saltoun, widow of a cousin of the King, who died in September aged 93.

The King was represented at the service by the 17th Earl of Dalhousie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were represented by the Duke and Duchess of Fife, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were represented by the Viscountess Petersham, the Duke of Kent was represented by Sir Andrew Cubie. Princess Alexandra, the Hon Lady Ogilvy was represented by Mr Alexander Manson.

Lady Saltoun was the twenty first holder of a Scottish peerage, and until her retirement in 2014 she was the only holder of a lordship of Parliament who had a seat in the House of Lords as an elected hereditary peer. 

Lady Saltoun, of Cairnbulg Castle, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, was, as a daughter-in-law of Lady Patricia Ramsay, a member of the Royal Family, and a regular visitor to Balmoral, and frequently seen on the platform of the Highland Games at Braemar as a guest of her husband's cousin, Queen Elizabeth II. The Braemar Gathering attended by the King and Queen is to take place on Saturday 7 September, 2024.

Lady Saltoun (pronounced Salton) was the Chief of the Name and Arms of Clan Fraser since 1 May 1984, by decree of the Court of the Lord Lyon. She was also the head of the Scottish lowland family the Frasers of Philorth.

The Saltoun title was created in 1445 for Sir Lawrence Abernethy, descendant of Hugh, Hereditary Abbot of the Pictish Abbacy of Abernethy on Tay, extant in 1172. The 4th Lord Saltoun fought at Flodden and escaped. On the death in 1669 of Margaret Abernethy, the title went to her cousin Alexander Fraser, a faithful supporter of both Charles I and Charles II, and has remained with the Frasers of Philorth ever since.

Flora Marjory Fraser was born 18 October, 1930, the only daughter of the 20th Lord Saltoun, MC, DL, JP (1886-1979), of Cairnbulg Castle, and his wife the former Dorothy Geraldine Welby (1890-1985), scion of the Welby baronets.

An elder brother, Lt Alexander Fraser, Master of Saltoun, MC, Grenadier Guards, was killed in action in February, 1944, aged 22, leaving Flora as heiress presumptive to her father's peerage.

She married 6 October, 1956, Capt Alexander Arthur Alfonso David Maule Ramsay of Mar, of the Grenadier Guards (born 21 December, 1919), scion of the Earls of Dalhousie, a godson of the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) and of Alfonso XIII, King of Spain, the only child of Admiral the Hon Sir Alexander Robert Maule Ramsay, GCVO, KCB, DSO (1881-1972), and his wife HRH Princess (Victoria) Patricia Helena Elizabeth of Connaught, CI, GCStJ (1886-1974), who on her marriage was authorised by Royal Licence to relinquish the style of royal highness and title of princess, and by another royal warrant was granted the style of Lady Patricia Ramsay, with precedence immediately before marchionesses of England.

She succeeded her father in the Scottish peerage, 31 August, 1979.

Flora's husband succeeded his aunt Princess Arthur of Connaught, Duchess of Fife in the Mar Lodge estate, Aberdeenshire, and became the laird of Mar and was authorised by the Lord Lyon to add the designation 'of Mar' to his surname.

Lady Saltoun, as Chief of the Name and Arms of Fraser retained that name on marriage. Her husband died 20 December, 2000, the day before his 81st birthday. She died 3 September, 2024.

The last major royal event at which Lady Saltoun was present was the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in Westminster Abbey in 2011. The King and Lord Lyon King of Arms had to be informed of her death before it could be made public, but the news was leaked several hours before.

Lady Saltoun leaves three daughters, the Hon Katharine Fraser (who retained that surname on her marriage), the Hon Alice, and the Hon Elizabeth. The eldest daughter, born 11 October, 1957), a goddaughter of Queen Ingrid of Denmark and the late Princess Mary, Princess Royal, succeeds to the Lordship of Saltoun (Peerage of Scotland, created 28 June, 1445).

The engagement was announced 26 November, 2024, between George Stanley St Clair Carter (born 1996), son of Simon St Clair Carter (born 20 January, 1953), and his 2nd wife Pamela Mary Garside (born 27 February, 1954), & Rosaleen Catriona Sitwell (Rosie) Hayward (born 1993), only daughter of Richard Anthony Hayward and his wife the former Alexandra Isobel Susanna Edith Sitwell (born 24 March, 1958), scion of the Sitwell baronets daughter of Sir (Sacheverell) Reresby Sitwell, 7th Baronet (1927-2009).

Jean, Baroness Denham 1931-2024

 Jean, Baroness Denham, who died 19 November, 2024, aged 93, was the widow of the 2nd Baron Denham.

The former Jean McCorquodale, scion of that landed gentry family, was born 4 May, 1931, daughter of Major Kenneth McCorquodale, MC (1894-1976), of Fambridge Hall, White Notley, co Essex, and his wife the former Ellen Viva Martin (1895-1987); and married 14 February, 1956, Bertram Stanley Mitford Bowyer, 2nd Baron Denham, KBE, PC (born 3 Oct, 1927), son of the 1st Baron Denham, MC (1886-1948), and his wife the former Hon Daphne Freeman-Mitford (1895-1996), daughter of the 1st Baron Redesdale, GCVO, KCB (1837-1916).

Her husband had succeeded as 2nd Baron Denham, 30 November, 1948, on the death of his father, a long-serving Conservative MP and junior minister whose peerage in 1937 had been preceded in 1933 by a baronetcy to which Bertie Denham added a second baronetcy, 27 Sept, 1950, inherited from a kinsman. 

Lord Denham was elected to the House of Lords in 1999, and at his retirement from upper house in 2021 at the age of 93, he was the longest-serving peer, having sat in the upper house since 1949. Such was his longevity, that he was also the last man alive to have served in Harold Macmillan’s government. He died 1 December, 2021.

Jean, Baroness Denham was a sister of Alastair McCorquodale (1925-2009), who represented Britain in athletics at the 1948 Olympic Games, and she was an aunt of Neil McCorquodale (born 1951), who married Lady Sarah Spencer, sister of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Lady Denham is survived by three sons, Richard, 3rd Baron (born 8 Feb, 1959), the Hon Henry Bowyer (born 9 May, 1963), and the Hon George Bowyer (born 13 Dec, 1964), and a daughter, the Hon Jocelyn (born 18 Oct, 1957),

The Baron Renfrew of Kaimsthorn 1937-2024

 Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorn, who died 24 November, 2024, aged 87, was an archaeologist, paleolinguist and Conservative peer noted for his work on radiocarbon dating, the prehistory of languages, archaeogenetics, neuroarchaeology, and the prevention of looting at archaeological sites.

Andrew Colin Renfrew was born 25 July, 1937, and was the Disney Professor of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge and Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research and was a Senior Fellow of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research.

He retired from the Disney Chair of Archaeology at Cambridge University in 2004. After joining the Department of Archaeology at Sheffield University as a lecturer in 1965, he became successively Professor of Archaeology at Southampton and then, in 1981, Cambridge, where he was also Master of Jesus College from 1986 to 1997. He was appointed a member of the House of Lords (Upper House) in the British Parliament in 1991, to serve as a ‘working peer’ on the Conservative side, taking the title Baron Renfrew of Kaimsthorn. Although in the earlier part of his career Renfrew was regarded as one of the leaders of the ‘New Archaeology’, his broad interests and wide intellectual frame- work have meant that he has encompassed a huge range of trends in archaeology. His published output is large and varied, and throughout his career he has been an active fieldworker, with excavation projects in Greece and Britain. His books have been translated into many languages, which, along with his persuasive powers of oratory, mean that he has been extremely influential in the development of archaeological theory over the last 40 years or more, on both sides of the Atlantic, and not only in the English-speaking world. Although he is an international scholar, his contributions to the subject on a European level make him a subject of great interest for readers of the EJA.

Julian Alexander Bethune Pilkington 1946-2024

  Julian Alexander Bethune Pilkington, who died 18 November, 2024, aged 78, was descended from the Bethune baronets, and was a great-grandson of the 1st Baron Palmer.

He was born 15 April, 1946, son of David Charles Bethune Pilkington (1916-1988), and his wife the former Nancy Gillian Palmer (1918-1995), scion of the Barons Palmer; and married in 1974, Susan Anne West (born 1951), daughter of Kenneth F. West and his wife the former Margaret Kathleen Dawson, by whom he had issue, a son, Oliver (born 1975), and two daughters, Louise and Felicity  (born 1978).
