Sir Peter Francis Smith-Marriott, 12th Baronet 1927-2023

Sir Peter Smith-Marriott, 12th Baronet, died 8 November, 2023, aged 96.

Peter Francis Smith-Marriott was born 14 February, 1927, the second son of Sir Ralph George Cavendish Smith-Marriott, 10th Baronet (1900-1987), and his wife the former Phyllis Elizabeth Kemp (who died 24 September, 1932); and succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his elder brother, Sir Hugh, 11th Bt, 19 July, 2013.

He married 28 October, 1961, Jean Graham Martin Ritchie (who died 22 March, 2022, aged 87), daughter of James Sorley Ritchie, of Harare, Zimbabwe, by whom he had issue, five sons, Martin, Neil, Ian, Mark and Paul. The eldest son, Martin Ralph Smith-Marriott (born 30 December, 1962), succeeds as 13th holder of the baronetcy created in 1774.

The Baroness Burden 1930-2023

 Lady Burden, who died 8 November, 2023, was the wife of the late Lord Burden, the 2nd Baron (1916-1995).

 Yorkshire-born Lady Burden was born Audrey Elswworth Sykes, a daughter of Major Wilfred Elsworth Sykes, of Kirk Ella, near Hull; and married 8 September, 1951, the then Hon Philip William Burden (born 21 June, 1916), son of Thomas William Burden, 1st Baron Burden, CBE (1885-1970), who was raised to the peerage of the UK, 1 Feb, 1950, by his wife the former Augusta Sime (who died 1976). Her husband succeeded his father in the peerage, 27 May, 1970, and died in 1995.

Lady Burden leaves three sons and three daughters. Her eldest son is Andrew, the 3rd Baron Burden (born 20 July, 1959).

 The Hon Pauline Maud Matarasso, who died 15 November, 2023, aged 94, was a scion of the Barons Sanderson of Ayot.

She was born 12 February, 1929, daughter of the 1st Baron Sanderson of Ayot (1894-1971), and his wife the former Evelyn Constance Ismay (1897-1940); and married 24 July, 1952, Robert Henri Matarasso (who died in 1982), son of Dr I.  Jane, Lady Barran, who died 24 October, 2023, aged 83, was the widow of Sir John Napoleon Ruthven Barran, 4th Baronet.

She was born Jane Margaret Hooker, 22 February, 1940, daughter of Sir Stanley George Hooker, CBE, FRS (1907-1984), the mathematician and jet engineer, and his first wife the Hon Margaret Bradbury (1911-1986), daughter of the 1st Baron Bradbury, GCB (1872-1950), the economist.

She married 7 September, 1965, John Napoleon Ruthven Barran (born 14 February, 1934), son and heir of Commander Sir John Leighton Barron, 3rd Baronet (1904-1974), and his wife the Hon Alison Mary Hore-Ruthven (1902-1974), third daughter of Major-General the 10th Lord Ruthven of Freeland, CB, CMG, DSO (1870-1956). Her husband succeeded his father, 28 December, 1974, as fourth baronet, of Chapel Allerton Hall, Co York, and died 25 March, 2010.

Lady Barran leaves a son, Sir John Ruthven Barran, 5th Baronet (born 10 Nov, 1971), and a daughter, Susannah Margaret (born 22 Apr, 1981).

  The life barony awarded to David Cameron, the foreign secretary, has been gazetted in the name, style and title of Baron Cameron of Chipping Norton, of Chipping Norton in the County of Oxfordshire.

 The Rt Hon David William Donald Cameron (born 9 October, 1966), PC, former prime minister, a descendant of King Willian IV and Mrs Jordan, will join the cabinet from the House of Lords with a life peerage.

A scion of the Scots landed family of the name Cameron, he is a grandson maternally of Sir William Mount, 2nd Baronet (1904-93).

Cameron married 1 June, 1996, Samantha Gwendoline Sheffield (born 18 Apr, 1971), scion of the Sheffield baronets, daughter of Sir Reginald Sheffield, 8th Baronet (born 9 May, 1946), by his wife the former Annabel Jones (born 14 Aug, 1948) (later Viscountess Astor).

He married 4 April, 1961, Margaret Ann Maxwell, daughter of John Cleveland Mawell, of New York, by whom he had issue, two sons, David and Michael, and three daughters, Caroline, Nina and Catherine.

Sir Frank is succeeded by his elder son, David Frank Sanderson (born 26 Feb, 1962).

 Lord Rowe-Beddoe, DL, who died 15 November, 2023, aged 85, was a Welsh businessman, life Baron and a crossbench member of the House of Lords.

David Sydney Rowe-Beddoe (born 19 Dec, 1937), and was a former chairman of the Welsh Development Agency, and was chairman of Cardiff Airport until November 2016. In 2006 he was created a life peer as Baron Rowe-Beddoe, of Kilgetty in the County of Dyfed.

The Baron Cotter 1936-2023

 Lord Cotter, a life peer, and a Liberal Democrat politician, died 14 November, 2023. He was 87.

Brian Joseph Michael Cotter was born 24 Aug, 1936, and served as the Lib Dem MP for Weston-super-Mare, 1997-2005.

Elected to the Commons in 1997, Brian Cotter was the first Member of Parliament for Weston-super-Mare to not be from the Conservative Party since 1923. He had contested the same seat in 1992 without success. He was re-elected in 2001, but lost the seat at the 2005 general election. Throughout his time in Parliament, he served as Small Business Spokesman for the Liberal Democrats. In April 2006, it was announced that Cotter would be raised to the peerage and was gazetted in the name, style and title of Baron Cotter, of Congresbury in the County of Somerset. He sat as a Liberal Democrat peer in the House of Lords.

Grainger Weston, who has died a month before his 100th birthday, was the heir to an Anglo-Canadian bakery empire but chose a different life as a Texas rancher, entrepreneur and philanthropist in his own right.

(George) Grainger Weston was born in 1923, son of Willard Garfield Weston (1898-1978), of Chester House, Clarendon Place, London W1, and Toronto, and his wife the former Reta Lila Howard (who died in 1967).

The Weston family is a prominent family of entrepreneurs that was founded in Canada and eventually developed global business interests, primarily in the food and retail sectors. The family operations began with the purchase of a bakery in 1884 by American-born Canadian George Weston in Toronto, Ontario. Over the course of subsequent decades, his descendants also established themselves in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States.

Major Richard William Naesmyth, 16th of Posso, head of that Scots landed gentry family, died 7 November, 2023, aged 84.

Maj Naesmyth of Posso, of Devizes, Wiltshire, served as an officer in the Royal Artillery, and was seconded to the Zambian army, 1965-67.

 Lieutenant-Commander Michael Wykeham Cornwallis, RN, who died 29 October, 2023, aged 98, was a scion of the Barons Cornwallis.

He was born 29 November, 1924, elder son of Capt the Hon Oswald Wykeham Cornwallis (1894-1974), and his wife the Hon Venetia Jane Digby (1900-1956), scion of the Barons Digby. He was a descendant of the first Tudor king, Henry VII.

He married 1stly, 18 Aug, 1953, Margaret Dorothy Cannon (1921-2003), daughter of John Wilson Cannon, of Faversham, Kent; and married 2ndly, 2005, Gwendoline Mary (Gwenda).

He leaves a son from his first marriage, Richard Wykeham (born 16 Nov, 1959), and a daughter, Diana Margaret (born 27 Aug, 1957).

Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, DBE, PC

 The life peerage awarded to Dame Sue Lascelles Carr, DBE, PC, has been gazetted in the name, style and title of Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, of Walton-on-the-Hill in the County of Surrey.

Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill (born 1 September, 1964), is a judge who has served as Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales since 1 October 2023. She is the first woman to serve as the head of the judiciary of England and Wales since the inception of the office of Lord Chief Justice in the 13th century. Carr previously served as a High Court judge from 2013 to 2020 and a Lady Justice of Appeal from 2020 to 2023.

Dame Sue chose to be styled Lady Chief Justice and succeeded Lord Burnett of Maldon on 1 October, 2023. Her swearing-in on 2 October, 2023, was the first time that the ceremony was livestreamed. On 6 November, 2023, she was created Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, of Walton-on-the-Hill in the County of Surrey.

The Baron Judge, PC 1941-2023

The Baron Judge, PC, who died 7 November, 2023, aged 82, was the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the head of the judiciary, 2008-2013. He was previously President of the Queen's Bench Division, at the time a newly created post assuming responsibilities transferred from the office of Lord Chief Justice. From 2019 to 2023, he served as Convenor of the Crossbench peers in the House of Lords. Igor Judge, who was born 19 May, 1941, was created a life peer in 2008 as Baron Judge, of Draycote in the county of Warwickshire. He sat as a crossbencher in the Lords.

 Anne Phillida Chetwynd-Stapylton (nee Pease), who died 31 October, 2023, aged 100, was a scion of the Pease baronets.

She was born 4 May, 1923, daughter of Sir Alfred Edward Pease, 2nd Baronet, MP, DL, JP (1857-1939), and his third wife the former Emily Elizabeth Smith (1897-1979). Her father served as Liberal MP for York, 1885-92, & was MP for Cleveland 1897-1902.

Anne Henson, who died 18 October, 2023, aged 84, was a scion of the Ratcliffe-Brotherton landed gentry family. She was the chatelaine of the Kirkham Abbey estate, North Yorkshire.

The Hon Michael Albemarle Bowes Lyon 1940-2023

The Hon Michael Albemarle (Alby) Bowes Lyon, who died 30 October, 2023, aged 83, was a scion of the Earls of Strathmore & Kinghorne and a cousin of the King.

He was born 29 May, 1940, the second son of Capt the Hon Michael Claude Hamilton Bowes Lyon (1893-1953), and his wife the former Elizabeth Margaret Cator (1899-1959), scion of that Norfolk landed gentry family. He was a nephew of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and a first cousin of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Alby Bowes Lyon was a director of Coutts & Co from 1969 to 1993, and in 1974 he was raised to the rank of an earl's younger son on the succession to the Earldom of Strathmore & Kinghorne of his elder brother, Fergus. ]

Sara, Viscountess Allenby 1942-2023

 Sara, Viscountess Allenby, widow of the 3rd Viscount, died 14 October, 2023. She was 80.

She was born 28 December, 1942 as Sara Margaret Wiggin, scion of the Wiggin baronets, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Milner Wiggin (1907-1994), and his wife the former Margaret Frances Livingstone-Learmonth (1914-1999), scion of that Scots landed gentry family; and married 29 July, 1965, the Hon Michael Jaffray Hynman Allenby (born 20 April, 1931), son and heir of the 2nd Viscount Allenby (1903-1984), and his wife the former Gertrude Mary Lethbridge Champneys (1905-1988), scion of that landed gentry family. Her husband served as Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Hussars (Prince Albert's Own), formely 11th Hussars. He fought in the Malayan Campaign between 1953 and 1956. He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Cyprus between 1957 and 1958. He was Brigade-Major of the 51st Brigade, Hong Kong between 1967 and 1969. He was Commander of the Royal Yeomanry (Territorial Army) between 1974 and 1977.1 He was General Staff Officer and Instructor of the Nigerian Staff College, Kaduna between 1977 and 1979, and succeeded his father as 3rd Viscount Allenby, 17 July, 1984. He died 3 October, 2014.

Viscountess Allenby leaves a son, Henry, 4th Viscount Allenby, who was born 29 July, 1968.

Amy Lascelles is the second daughter of the Hon [Robert] Jeremy Hugh Lascelles [born 14 February, 1955], by his first wife the former Julie Baylis [born 19 July, 1957], and is a granddaughter of the late 7th Earl of Harewood, KBE [1923-2011], by his first wife the former Maria Donata (Marion) Nanetta Paulina Gustava Erwina Wilhelmina Stein [later Mrs Jeremy Thorpe] [1926-2014].

The infant is a great-great granddaughter of HRH The Princess Mary, Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood, CI, GCVO, GBE [1897-1965], and a great-great-great granddaughter of HM King George V [1865-1936], and HM Queen Mary [1867-1953].

He married firstly, 1957, Jennifer Sally Cunningham (1936-1968), daughter of Commander Maxwell Cunningham, RN, and his wife the former Elsie Veronica Havelock Groves; married 2ndly, 10 March, 1972 (div), as her second husband, the Hon Susan Geraldine Verney (1942-2009), former wife of Jeremy James Wagg, and daughter of the 20th Baron Willoughby de Broke (1896-1986), and his wife the former Rachel Wrey (1911-1991), scion of the Wrey baronets; and married 3rd, in Oct, 1991, (Sarah) Carinthia Alston-Roberts-West (born 1951), the model, actress, photographer, scion of that landed gentry family, daughter of General Sir Michael Montgomerie Alston-Roberts-West, GCB, DSO** (1905-1978), and his wife the former Christine Sybil Oppenheim (1913-2000), descended from the Barons Dunboyne.

From his first marriage he had issue, a son, Robie Patrick Maxwell Uniacke (born 8 Oct, 1960), who succeeds as head of the landed gentry family, and a daughter, Camilla Alexandra (born 1959), and from his second marriage he had a son, Caspar John (born 14 March, 1973), and a daughter, Kate Rachel (born in 1975, and died 10 July, 1979).

The funeral takes place at Stonefall Crematorium, Harrogate on 7 November, 2023.

Theodore Holland Beaumont (born 2023)

Elizabeth Louise Beaumont (nee Holland, born 1990), wife of Richard Christian Beaumont [born 27 May, 1989], scion of the Viscounts Allendale, gave birth to a son, Theodore Holland, 13 October, 2023.

The Baron Elder 1950-2023

 Lord Elder, a Labour politician and life peer, died 24 October, 2023. He was 73.

Thomas Murray Elder was educated at the Kirkcaldy High School and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Master of Arts in economic history. He was a childhood friend of former Labour leader Gordon Brown.

From 1972 to 1980, Elder worked for the Bank of England. From 1984 to 1992, he was a member of the Scottish Labour Party, and since 1988 its General Secretary. He was also a Labour member of the Executive of the Scottish Constitutional Convention (1989-1992). After this, Elder became the chief of staff to MP John Smith, a post he held until 1994. He was a special adviser to Donald Dewar, Secretary of State for Scotland, at the Scottish Office from 1997 to 1999. He was created a life peer as Baron Elder, of Kirkcaldy in Fife on 19 July 1999.

 David Holford Benson, who died 17 October, 2023, aged 85, was a scion of the landed gentry family of Stanway House.

He was born 26 February, 1938, the second son of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Reginald Lindsay (Rex) Benson, DSO, MVO, MC (1889-1968),  of Cucumber Farm, Singleton, near Chichester, Sussex, and his wife, Leslie (1907-81), former wife of Condé Montrose Nast (1873-1942), and daughter of Albert Volney Foster (1877-1950), of Lake Forest, Illinois, United States, and his wife the former Grace Isabelle Lindsay (1886-1908); and married 17 October, 1964, the Lady Elizabeth Mary Charteris (born 2 July, 1941), eldest child of the 12th Earl of Wemyss & March (1912-2008), and his 1st wife the former Mavis Lynette Gordon Murray (1911-1988), by whom he had issue, a son, Matthew James (born 26 June, 1966), and two daughters, Henrietta Katherine (born 29 March, 1969), and Katharine Emma (born 7 May, 1972).

He died on his 59th wedding anniversary.

The Duchess of Noto is a scion of the Earls of Lindsay, the third and youngest daughter of James Randolph Lindesay-Bethune, 16th Earl of Lindsay [born 19 November, 1955], by his wife the former Diana Mary Chamberlayne-Macdonald [born 12 September, 1961], scion of that landed gentry family.

 Lieutenant-Colonel (John) Hugh Pitman, OBE, who died 11 October, 2023, aged 88, was a scion of that landed family, a descendant of Sir Isaac Pitman, who invented the shorthand system of writing, and sometime commanding oficer of the Blues and Royals.

He married firstly, in 1961 (divorced 1991), Rosemary Alice Dickinson (1940-2010), scion of that landed gentry family, daughter of Robert Joicey Dickinson (1901-81) and his wife the former Alice Penelope Barnett (1907-85); and married 2ndly, in 1991, (Helen) Ruth White (born 1957), daughter of Albert Edward White, and his wife the former Jane Hutchison.

Anne Veronica Theresa Ponsonby (née Maynard) 1924-2023

 Mrs Myles Ponsonby, who died 3 October, 2023, aged 98, was the widow of a scion of the Barons De Mauley.

In the Second World War she was an SOE coder and telegraphist.

The Baroness Empey, MBE (died 2023)

 Lady Empey, MBE, who has died in a Belfast hospice was the wife the Ulster politician, the Lord Empey, a life baron.

The former Stella Ethna Donnan, she married in 1977, Reginald Norman Morgan Empey, OBE (born 26 October, 1947), who was appointed OBE (1994), knighted in 1999, and raised to the peerage for life, in 2011, as Baron Empey, of Shandon in the City and Borough of Belfast.

Her husband best known as Reg Empey, is a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland, who was the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) from 2005 to 2010. He was the chairman of the Ulster Unionist Party from 2012 to 2019. Empey was also twice Lord Mayor of Belfast and was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Belfast from 1998 to 2011.

Lady Empey, who was appointed MBE in 2007 for services to the community in Northern Ireland, leaves issue, a son the Hon Christopher Empey, and a daughter the Hon Julie-Anne.

Donald Cameron of Lochiel, CVO, DL, 27th Chief of the Clan Cameron, died 20 October, 2023. He was 77.

Donald Angus Cameron was born 2 August, 1946, son of Sir Donald Hamish Cameron, 26th Chief of the Clan Cameron, Knight of the Thistle (1910-2004), and his wife the former Margaret Doris Gathorne-Hardy (1913-2006), scion of the Earls of Cranbrook.

He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (TA) in 1966, and was later a chartered accountant (FCA, 1971); he served as president of the Highland Society of London charity 1994-96. In 1986, he was appointed a Deputy lieutenant of Inverness-shire, and later served as the Lord Lieutenant of Inverness-shire from 2002 until 2021. In 2017, he was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. He and his wife were great friends of the King and Queen, and His Majesty stood sponsor at the christening of Cameron's daughter, Catherine.

Upon the death of his father, 26 May, 2004, he assumed the chiefship of Clan Cameron, becoming the 27th Lochiel. 

He married 1 June 1974, at St. Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh, the Lady Cecil Nennella Therese Kerr, OBE (born 22 April, 1948), daughter of the 12th Marquess of Lothian, KCVO (1922-2004), by his wife Antonella Newland (1922-2007). They had four children, Catherine Mary (born 1 May, 1975), ,the Rt Hon Donald Cameron, MSP (born 26 Nov, 1976), who now succeeds as 28th Chief of the Clan, Lucy Margot Therese (born 5 July, 1980), a goddaughter of the Princess Royal, and Emily Frances (born 18 January, 1986).

The 2nd Baron Teviot died 15 October, 2023. He was 88.

He was a peer for 55 years, the second holder of the barony (Peerage of the UK, cr 1940). Before inheriting the title Charles Kerr was an extremely ‘posh’ Brighton bus driver on the Hollingdean and Hollingbury routes in Sussex. 

Charles John Kerr was born 16 December, 1934, son of Charles Iain Kerr, DSO, MC (1874-1968), scion of the Marquesses of Lothian; DSO 1919; Member of Parliament (Liberal) for Montrose 1932-40; Junior Lord of the Treasury 1937-39; Comptroller of the Household 1939-40; Chairman, National Liberal Organisation 1940 ; Chief Liberal Whip, House of Lords 1945; Ensign, Royal Company of Archers 1945, and his 2nd wife the former Florence Angela Villiers (1904-1979), scion of the Earls of Clarendon.

Charles Kerr succeeded as 2nd Baron Teviot on his father's death, 7 January, 1968. He married 25 September, 1965, Patricia Mary Harris, daughter of Alexander Harris. His bride also worked on Brighton buses as a 'clippie' (a conductress who issued bus tickets), and the marriage was much reported in the British press.

Lord and Lady Teviot had a son and a daughter. The son, the Hon Charles Robert Kerr (born 19 September, 1971), now succeeds to the peerage.

The Baroness Thomas of Walliswood, OBE, DL 1935-2023

Baroness Thomas of Walliswood, OBE, DL, who died 6 October, 2023, aged 87, was a businesswoman and a Liberal Democrat politician.

She worked for the National Economic Development Office from 1971 to 1974 and was chief executive of the Council of Europe of the British Clothing Industries from 1974 to 1978. Between 1985 and 1994, she was a school governor. Susan Thomas contested Mole Valley for the SDP-Liberal Alliance in the 1983 and 1987 general elections and Surrey for the Liberal Democrats in the 1994 European Parliament election, but failed to be elected.

She was appointed OBE in 1989, and served as a Deputy Lieutenant for the county of Surrey from 1996.  On 6 October 1994, she was created a life peer as Baroness Thomas of Walliswood, of Dorking in the County of Surrey, and she sat in the House of Lords until 18 May 2016, at which point she ceased to be a member pursuant to section 2 of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014, having failed to attend during the whole of the 2015–16 session without being on leave of absence.

She was born 20 Dec, 1935, as Susan Petronella Arrow, daughter of John Arrow and his wife the former Ebba Fordham; and married in 1958, David Churchill Thomas, CMG (1933-2020), by whom she had issue, three daughters.

 The Lady Lovat, wife of the 16th Lord Lovat, gave birth to a second daughter, the Hon Farra Salma Fraser, in London, 2 October, 2023, a sister for the Hon Vaila Gianmarina Fraser, who was born 30 April, 2021.

Lady Lovat is the former Hon Petra Louise Palumbo [born 1989], daughter of the life peer, the Baron Palumbo [born 20 July, 1935], and his wife the former Hayat Morowa. Petra married in 2016, Simon Fraser, 16th Lord Lovat [born 13 Feb, 1977], son of the Hon Simon Augustine Fraser, Master of Lovat [1939-94], and his wife the former Virginia Grose [later Mrs Frank Johnson]. 

The 16th Lord Lovat inherited the peerage and the estate at Beauly, Inverness-shire, on his grandfather's death, 16 March, 1995. He is Colonel-in-Chief of the 78th Fraser Highlanders.

Ariel, Lady Everard, who died 9 October, 2023, was the widow of Sir Robin Everard, 4th Baronet.

She was born in 1942 as Ariel Ingrid Cleasby-Thompson, daughter of Colonel Peter Olav Cleasby-Thompson, MBE, MC (1913-1980), of Blackhill House, Little Cressingham, Norfolk, and his wife the former Katharine Slingsby; and married 28 September, 1963, Robin Charles Everard (born 5 Oct, 1939), son and heir of Sir Nugent Henry Everard, 3rd Baronet (1905-1984), and his wife the former Frances Audrey Jesson (died 1975). Her husband succeeded to the baronetcy on his father's death, 15 December, 1984.

Her husband was commissioned into the Duke of Wellington's Regiment and served 1958-61; he was a money broker and Managing Director, P Murray-Jones 1962-76; and a consultant 1976-91; and died 31 August, 2010, aged 70.

 Lady Everard leaves issue, a son Sir Henry Everard, 5th Baronet (born 6 Aug, 1970), and two daughters, Catherine Mary (born 1964), and Victoria Frances (born 1966).

 Tess P.H. Erskine (nee Miles), wife of Geordie James Donald Erskine [born 1990], gave birth to a daughter, Matilda Elspeth Patricia, 29 September, 2023.

Geordie is the second son of Major James Malcolm Kenneth Erskine [born 22 November, 1957], of Duncrievie, Perthshire, and his wife the former Jennifer MacLellan/

Tess Erskine is the only daughter of Mr J.D. Miles, of Tredington, Warwickshire, and Mrs K.V. Miles, of London.

Lady Daunt (1938-2023), widow of Sir Timothy Daunt, KCMG

Lady Daunt, who died 2 October, 2023, aged 84, was the widow of Sir Timothy Daunt, KCMG (1935-2023), a diplomat and sometime Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man.

Sir Timothy was commissioned into the Royal Armoured Corps in 1955 and posted to the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars. After completing national service, he joined the diplomatic service and, after a series of postings, became Permanent Representative to NATO in Brussels in 1982 and then British Ambassador to Turkey from 1986 to his retirement in 1992. In retirement he became Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man. He later became chairman of the Ottoman Fund, a business established to provide mortgages for properties in Turkey.

Lady Daunt was born Patricia Susan Knight (4 Oct, 1938), daughter of Major Claude Thorburn Knight (1910-1993), and his wife the former Hon Priscilla Dodson (1914-1995), daughter of the 2nd Baron Monk Bretton, CB (1869-1933) and married 26 July, 1962, Timothy Lewis Achilles Daunt, who was born 11 October, 1935, and was head of that Irish landed gentry family, son of Leslie Henry Graeme Daunt (1904-1975), and his wife the former Margery Mary Kenny Jones (1900-1981). Her husband died 5 Aug, 2023, aged 87.

She leaves a son, James (born 18 Oct, 1963), and two daughters, Eleanor (born 25 Apr, 1965), and Alice (born 23 Nov, 1969).

 Anthony Holden, journalist, broadcaster, and writer of non-fiction blockbusters on subjects ranging from poker to the Royal family, died 7 October, 2023, aged 76. He was a scion of the Holden baronets.

Anthony Ivan Holden was born 22 May, 1947, son of John Holden (1918-85), and his wife the former Margaret Lois Sharpe (who died 1985), and was a grandson of Sir George Holden, 2nd Baronet (1890-1937).

He married firstly, 1 May, 1971 (div 1988), Amanda Juliet Warren, daughter of Sir Harold Brian Seymour Warren (1914-1996); he married 2ndly, 21 July, 1990, Cynthia Blake, daughter of George Blake, of Brookline, Mass., USA.

Holden is survivved by his second wife and three sons from his first marriage, Samuel (born 1975), Joseph (born 1977), and Benjamin (born 1979).

 Sir Jonathan Benn, 4th Baronet, died 3 October, 2023. He was 90.

He was Chairman SCA Pensions Trust Ltd 1988-98, and held various positions in Reed International PLC (formerly A.E. Reed & Co) 1957-88; Director, Reed Paper & Board (UK) Ltd 1971, Managing Director 1976; Director Reed Group Ltd 1976; Chairman and Chief Eecutive, Reed Paper & Board (UK) Ltd 1977-90; Chairman Reedpack Paper Grroup 1988-90; President British Paper & Board Industries Federation, 1985-87, &c.

He was born 27 July, 1933, son of Sir John Andrews Benn, 3rd Baronet (1904-1984), and his wife the Hon Ursula Helen Alers Hankey (1909-2006), daughter of the 1st Baron Hankey, PC, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, FRS (1877-1963).

He succeeded to the baronetcy on his father's death, 19 Dec, 1984. He was a kinsman of the Left-wing Labour stalwart Tony Benn, PC, MP (the disclaimed Viscount Stansgate).

He married 2 July, 1960, Jennifer Mary Howells (born 1936), the eldest daughter of Dr Wilfred Vivian Howells, OBE (1903-87), and his wife the former Mary Eileen Hamar (1908-97), by whom he had issue, a son, Robert Ernest Benn (born 17 Oct, 1963), and a daughter, Juliet Clare (born 2 Feb, 1966).

 Lady Mahon, who died 1 October, 2023, was the wife of Sir William Mahon, LVO, 7th Baronet.

She was born in 1944 as Rosemary Jane Melvill, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Michael Ernest Melvill (1910-1983), of Symington, Lanarkshire, and married 20 April, 1968, Colonel William Walter Mahon (born 4 Dec, 1940), son and heir of Sir George Edward John Mahon, 6th Baronet (1911-1987) (of Castlegar, Co Galway, Bt, UK, cr 1819), and his wife the former Audrey Evelyn Jagger (who died 4 Apr, 1957). Her husband was commissioned into the Irish Guards in 1960, and appointed a Member of HM Body Guard, Hon Corps of Gentlemen at Arms, 1993; he succeeded as 7th baronet on his father's demise, 16 Dec, 1987, and was appointed LVO , in 2011.

Lady Mahon is survived by her husband a son, James (born 29 Oct, 1976), and two daughters, Annabel (born 12May, 1970), and Lucy (born 15 Apr, 1972).

 Lady Martha Catherine Addington (nee Lowry-Corry, born 27 May, 1992), wife of Raleigh Thomas Addington [born 1987], scion of the Viscounts Sidmouth, gave birth to a daughter, Hester Bree, 13 September, 2023.

Raleigh Addington is the youngest son of Peter John Gerald Addington [born 2 Aug, 1948], of Highway, Calne, Wiltshire, by his wife the former Rosemary Anita Lamb.

Lady Martha is a daughter of the 8th Earl of Belmore [born 4 Sept, 1951],  of The Garden House, Castle Coole, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, by his wife the former Lady Mary Jane Meade [born 12 July, 1952], daughter of the 6th Earl of Clanwilliam [1914-89].

Hester Addington is a great-great-granddaughter of the 6th Viscount Sidmouth [1887-1976].

 Lady Baddeley, who died 23 September, 2023, aged 80, was the second wife of Sir John Baddeley, 4th Baronet.

She was born in 1942 as Carol Frances van Geffen, daughter of Adrian Denis Auguste Van Geffen (born 1913), and his wife the former Olive Reed (1913-2008). Her name was changed some years later to Greenham on her mother's second marriage, in 1948, to Gordon Leslie Clarence Greenham (1916-1977).

She married 1stly, in 1963, John A. Quinlan; and married 2ndly, 16 April, 1998, Sir John Wolsey Beresford Baddeley, 4th Baronet (born 27 January, 1938), son of Sir John Beresford Baddeley, 3rd Baronet (1899-1979), and his wife the former Nancy Winifred Wolsey (who died 25 Oct, 1994).

Lady Baddeley leaves issue from her first marriage, Andrew and Timothy Quinlan.
