Anthony Holden, journalist, broadcaster, and writer of non-fiction blockbusters on subjects ranging from poker to the Royal family, died 7 October, 2023, aged 76. He was a scion of the Holden baronets.
Anthony Ivan Holden was born 22 May, 1947, son of John Holden (1918-85), and his wife the former Margaret Lois Sharpe (who died 1985), and was a grandson of Sir George Holden, 2nd Baronet (1890-1937).
Holden was a journalist with Hemel Hempstead Evening Echo, 1970-73, & with Sunday Times 1973-79; and his books include The St. Albans Poisoner (1974); Charles, Prince of Wales (1979); a journalist with the Observer and Punch 1979-81; author of Their Royal Highnesses, published 1981; on the Times newspaper 1981-82; author of Of Presidents, Prime Ministers and Princes, published (1984); The Queen Mother (1985); Don Giovanni, published in 1987; Olivier, published in 1988; Charles, published in 1988; Big Deal, published in 1990; A Princely Marriage, published in 1991; The Tarnished Crown, published in 1993; The Oscars, published in 1993; Tchaikovsky, published in 1995, and Diana, published in 1997.
He married firstly, 1 May, 1971 (div 1988), Amanda Juliet Warren, daughter of Sir Harold Brian Seymour Warren (1914-1996); he married 2ndly, 21 July, 1990, Cynthia Blake, daughter of George Blake, of Brookline, Mass., USA.
Holden is survivved by his second wife and three sons from his first marriage, Samuel (born 1975), Joseph (born 1977), and Benjamin (born 1979).
