Rear Admiral John Oliver Roberts, CB, died 27 December, 2025, aged 101.
He was a naval officer who saw service in the Second World War. Was a Midshipman on HM Ships Renown and Tartar, 1941-43; Sub-Lieutenant, HMS Serapis 1943-44; Lieutenant, 1945; HMS Triumph 1947-49; RNAS, Lossiemouth, 1949-51; Flag Lieutenant to FOGT, 1952; Lieutenant-Commander, 1953; HMAS Vengeance & Sydney, 1953-54; Commanding Officer No. 803 Squadron, HMS Eagle 1957-58; Commander, 1958; RNVR Southern Air Div 1954-56; later on Naval Staff 1962-64; Captain 1964; CSO Flag Officer Aircraft Carriers, 1964-66; CO, HMS Galatea 1966-68; Naval Staff 1968-70; Commanding Officer HMS Ark Royal 1971-72; Rear Admiral, 1972; Flag Officer, Sea Training 1972-74; COS to C-in-C Fleet 1974-76; Flag Officer Naval Air Command, 1976-78.
He was appointed CB in 1976.
He was born 4 April, 1924, son of John Vaughan Roberts, of Llangurig, Montgomeryshire.
He was four times married - firstly, on 16 June, 1950 (div. 1960), the Lady Hermione Mary Morton Stuart (1925-1969), daughter of the 19th Earl of Moray (1894-1974); married 2ndly, 1963 (div. 1987), Honor Morigold Gordon Gray; married 3rdly, 1987, Sheila Violet Mary Traub (nee Barker) who died in 2012; and fourthly, 2014, Gillian ffrench Reckitt (nee Nobbs).
He leaves a daughter, Doune Joanna, from his first marriage, and a son and a daughter from his second marriage.
