_. Steven Hugh Walthall Spurrier, who died 9 March, 2021, aged 79, was a wine expert and merchant, scion of the Spurrier landed gentry family.
Spurrier organised the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, which unexpectedly elevated the status of California wine and promoted the expansion of wine production in the New World. He was also the founder of the Academie du Vin and Christie's Wine Course, in addition to authoring and co-authoring several wine books.
He was born in 1941 the second son of Capt Henry John Marston Spurrier [1913-88], of Cubley Old Hall, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, and his wife the former Pamela Agnes Neame, scion of that landed gentry family.
He married in 1968, Arabella Ann Lawson (b 1946) dau of Lt-Cdr (Arnold) Derek Arthur Lawson (1907-1984) and his wife the Hon Flora Breckinridge Fermor-Hesketh (1913-1970) daughter of the 1st Baron Hesketh, and they had issue, a son John Christian [born 1971] and a daughter, Catherine Isabelle Flora [b 1973].
