_. Jeremy Fox Eric Smith, who died 13 March, 2021, aged 92, was a scion of the Smith landed gentry family of Shottesbrooke Park & Ashfold.
He was Chairman of Smith St Aubyn [Holdings] PLC 1973-86; Chairman, Transparent Paper Ltd 1965-76; Chairman London Discount Market Association 1978-80; Trustee, Henry Smiths' Charity 1991-97; DL West Sussex 1988; High Sheriff of West Sussex 1992-93. His home was The Old Rectory, Slaugham, West Sussex.
He is a kinsman of HM The Queen who has Smith ancestry via Frances Dora Smith, wife of the 13th Earl of Strathmore & Kinghorne.
He was born 17 November, 1928, and educated at Eton, the second son of Capt Evan Cadogan Eric Smith, MC [1894-1950], sometime chairman of the National Provincial Bank, and his wife the former [Beatrice] Helen Williams [1896-1988].
He had an elder brother, Sir John Lindsay Eric Smith [1923-2007], who inherited Shottesbrooke Park, Berkshire and Ashfold, Sussex, a younger brother, Mark Eric [born 1930], and a sister Fortune, Duchess of Grafton, GCVO [born 24 Feb 1920], Mistress of the Robes to HM The Queen since 1967, wife of the 11th Duke of Grafton, KG [1919-2011].
He married 21 Feb, 1953, Julia Mary Rona Burrell [1934-2004], scion of the Burrell baronets, daughter of Lt-Col Sir Walter Burrell, 8th Baronet [1903-85], and his wife the former Hon Anne Judith Denman [1907-87], scion of the Barons Denman, by whom he had issue, two sons, Julian [born 1956] and Hugo [born 1957], and two daughters, Dione [born 1954] and Sarah [1962-2018]. His elder daughter Dione is the Countess of Verulam, wife of the 7th Earl of Verulam [born 21 Apr, 1951].
