Capt Simon George Melville Portal 1927-2021

 _. Capt Simon George Melville Portal, late the 17th/21st Lancers, who died 10 March, 2021, aged 93, was a scion of the Portal baronets, and a grandson maternally of the 2nd Viscount Goschen.

He served in Palestine 1948, and Korea, 1950-51 [with the 8th Hussars]; attached to the Trucial Oman Levies 1955-56; ADC to the C-in-C Far East Land Forces 1958-59; a member of the London Stock Exchange 1960-65.

He was born 18 September, 1927, son of Maj. Melville Edward Bertram Portal [1900-71], and his wife the former Hon Cicely Winifred Goschen [1899-1980], daughter of the 2nd Viscount Goschen [1866-1952].

He married 13 June, 1962 [div 1971], Gillian Dance, daughter of Maj. James Cyril Aubrey Dance, MP, of Moreton House, Moerton Morrell, Warwickshire; by whom he had issue, one son, the actor, Robert Melville Portal [born 3 July, 1967], who is best known for his role as Paul Critchley on the BBC television series The Amazing Mrs Pritchard (2006) and as the King in the film The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016). He is also known for his role as Lord Richmond on the ITV drama series Belgravia (2020).
