_. The Lord Hutton, PC, who died 14 July, 2020, aged 89, was a former Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, and a Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland.
He was born James Brian Edward Hutton, 29 June, 1931, son of James and Mabel Hutton, of Belfast, and educated at Shrewsbury School and Balliol College, Oxford.
Career: Called to the Northern Ireland Bar, 1954; QC, Northern Ireland, 1970; Called to the English Bar, 1972; Junior Counsel to the Attorney General of Northern Ireland, 1969; Bencher, Inner Court of Northern Ireland, 1974; Legal Adviser to the Minister of Home Affairs, Northern Ireland, 1973; Senior Crown Counsel in Northern Ireland, 1973-79; Judge of the High Court of Justice, Northern Ireland, 1979-88; Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, 1988-97; Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, 1997 -; Hon Bencher, Inner Temple, 1988; Member, Joint Law Enforcement Commission, 1974; Deputy Chairman Boundary Commission for Northern Ireland, 1985-88; Visitor, University of Ulster, 1999; Hon LLD, Queen's University Belfast, 1992, &c.
He was knighted in 1988 and Sworn of the Privy Council in that year. Created a Life Baron, in 1997, as Baron Hutton, of Bresagh in the County of Down.
Lord Hutton married firstly 1975, Mary Gillian Murland, who died in 2000; married secondly, 2001, Rosalind Ann [Lindy], widow of Christopher H. Nickols. He leaves two daughters from his first marriage, Louise and Helen.
