Obituary: Lady Vallance of Tummel

_. The Lady Vallance of Tummel, who died 9 July, 2020, aged 75, was the wife of the businessman and Liberal Democrat peer, Lord Vallance of Tummel [born 20 May, 1943].

Dr Elizabeth Mary Vallance was founder and chairman of , me too, since 1999. She was a lecturer in politics at Queen Mary College, later Queen Mary and Westfield College; Senior Lecturer, Reader in Government and Politics, 1968-85; Head, Department of Politics, 1985-88; Visiting Professor, 1990-96; Hon Fellow, 1997; Chairman, St George's Healthcare NHS Trust, 1993-1999; Director, HMV Group, 1990-97; Director, Norwich Union plc, 1995-2000;  Director, Charter European Trust plc from 1998; PPP Healthcare Medical Trust, 1999; Chairman, NHS Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards, 2000; Chairman of Governors of James Allen's Girls' School, 1991-94; Chairman, Council of Institute of Education, University of London, 2000; Member of the Advisory Council, Citizenship Foundation, from 1988; FRSA, 1991; Member of the Council of Dulwich Picture Gallery Trust, 1995-2000; Member of the Council, RSA, 1997; Trustee, Royal Anniversary Trust, 1994; JP, Inner London, 1993, &c.

Her publications include: [ed] The State, Society, and self-destruction [1975]; Women in the House [1979]; [with Davies] Women in Europe, [1992]; with Radice and Willis MP: the job of a Backbencher [1988]; with Mahoney, Business Ethics in a New Europe [1992].

Her husband was a former Chairman and Chief Executive of British Telecommunications and Vice-Chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

She was born 8 April, 1945 as Elizabeth Mary MacGonnigal, daughter of William Henderson MacGonnigal [1916-2000], of Bearsden, Dunbartonshire, by his wife the former Hon Jean Brown Kirkwood [b 13 May, 1917, d 1991], daughter of the 1st Baron Kirkwood, PC, JP [1872-1955].

She married in 1967, the then Iain David Thomas Vallance, son of Edmund Thomas Vallance [1907-1999], by his wife the former Janet Wright Bell Ross Davidson [1908-1995]. Her husband, who was knighted in 1994, was created a life peer in 2004, as Baron Vallance of Tummel, of Tummel in Perth and Kinross.

She is survived by her husband and two children, Rachel and Edmund.
