4th Baron Strathcona & Mount Royal 1923-2018

_. The Baron Strathcona & Mount Royal, fourth holder of the peerage, died 16 June, 2018. He was 94.

Lord Strathcona was a Vice-Chairman, Maritime Trust, and President of the UK Pilots Association and Steamboat Assoc of Gt Britain.

He served as Lord-in-Waiting to HM and Government Whip in the Heath Administration 1973-4; was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the RAF Jan-Mar 1974; Joint Deputy Leader of the Opposition, House of Lords 1976-79; Minister of State, Ministry of Defence in Margaret Thatcher's first administration, 1979-81 &c.

His great-grandfather, Sir Donald Alexander Smith, GCMG, GCVO, FRS, was created a peer of the United Kingdom as Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal, of Glencoe, co Argyll, and of Mount Royal, Quebec, Canada, 23 Aug, 1897, with remainder to the heirs male of his body, and further created Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal, of Mount Royal, Quebec, Canada, and Glencoe, Co Argyll, 26 June, 1900, with special remainder, in default of male issue, to his daughter, and her heirs male, and upon his death, 21 Jan, 1914, the senior barony became extinct, and the junior barony passed to his daughter, Margaret Charlotte, wife of Robert Jared Bliss Howard.

Donald Euan Palmer Howard was born 26 November, 1923, son of the 3rd Baron Strathcona & Mount Royal (1891-1959), by his wife the former Hon Diana Evelyn Loder (1899-1985), scion of the Barons Wakehurst, daughter of the 1st Baron.

He succeeded to the peerage upon his father's demise, 22 February, 1959.

He married 1stly, 20 Feb, 1954 (div 1977), the Lady Jane Mary Waldegrave, second daughter of the 12th Earl Waldegrave, KG (1905-95), by his wife the former Mary Hermione Grenfell (1909-95); married 2ndly, 1978, Mrs Patricia Middleton, daughter of Harvey Evelyn Thomas.

Lord Strathcona & Mount Royal leaves  issue from his first marriage, two sons, Donald and Andrew, and four daughters, Jane, Katharine, Caroline and Emma.

The elder son, the Hon Donald Alexander Smith Howard, born 24 June, 1961, succeeds to the peerage.
