Penelope Alexandra Chamberlayne-Macdonald died 15 December, 2025, aged 89. She was a scion of the Chamberlayne landed gentry family, and was a grandmother of HRH The Duchess of Noto.
She was born Penelope Alexandra Chamberlayne, in 1936, daughter of Tankerville Chamberlayne (1890-1943), head of that landed gentry family, and his wife the former Margaret Frances Bertram (1890-1990); and married 15 April, 1958, Major Nigel Donald Peter Macdonald, CVO, OBE (who assumed the additional surname of Chamberlayne in 1958), Equerry to HRH The late Duke of Gloucester and Gentleman Usher to HM Queen Elizabeth II, a younger son of Sir Godfrey Middleton Bosville Macdonald, 15th Baronet (1887-1951), and his wife the Hon Rachel Audrey Campbell (1894-1977), scion of the Barons Colgrain, by whom she had issue, two sons who predeceased her, Alexander (1959-2015), and Thomas (1969-2017), and two daughters, one of whom precdeased her, Frances (1965-85), and Diana (born 12 Sept, 1961), wife of the 16th Earl of Lindsay (born 19 Nov, 1955).
Penelope's granddaughter, Lady Charlotte Diana Lindesay-Bethune (born 12 May, 1993), married 25 Sept, 2021, HRH Jaime de Borbón y Landaluce, Duca di Noto (born 26 June 1992).
