Alexandra, Lady Wedgwood 1938-2025

Alexandra, Lady Wedgwood, who died 17 December, 2025, aged 87, was the widow of Sir Hugo Martin Wedgwood, 3rd Baronet (1933-2010).

Lady Wedgwood was an authority on Pugin and Architectural Archivist of the Houses of Parliament. She wrote the Guide to the Speaker’s House, and catalogued the Pugin family’s drawings after many years of labour at the V&A and RIBA. She was an incisive scholar of the drawings and style of the architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, co-designer of the Houses of Parliament, where she was made Architectural Archivist in 1982.

Alexandra Mary Gordon Clark, 30 July, 1938, scion of that landed gentry family of Mickleham Hall, the elder daughter of Alfred Alexander Gordon Clark (1900-1958), a judge of the county court and popular novelist as 'Cyril Hare', by his wife Mary Barbara Lawrence (1909-1975), daughter of the horticulturalist Sir William Matthew Trevor Lawrence, 3rd Baronet (1870-1934).

The Architectural Archivist post, Lady Wedgwood’s longest and most official-sounding appointment (1982-98), was at the initiative of the Pugin advocate Sir Robert Cooke, MP. Although no catalogue was to be forthcoming, her advocacy of the importance of drawings, photographs and written information in decisions about the conservation of the Palace of Westminster was crucial. She wrote the Guide to the Speaker’s House (1994).

She married 20 July, 1963, (Hugo) Martin Wedgwood (born 27 Dec, 1933), a descendant of the master potter Josiah Wedgwood. He was the eldest son of Sir John Hamilton Wedgwood (1907-1989), and his wife the former Diana Mildred Hawkshaw (who died 3 Oct, 1976). Martin Wedgwood succeeded to the baronetcy on his father's death, 8 December, 1989, and died 12 October, 2010.

Lady Wedgwood was elected as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1983 was sponsored by her cousin, the architectural historian Lesley Lewis (1909-2010). She was appointed honorary patron of the Society of Architectural Historians (GB) in 2019.

Lady Wedgwood leaves issue, a son, Professor Sir Ralph Wedgwood, 4th Baronet (born 10 December, 1964), and two daughters, Julia Mary (born 10 Dec, 1966), and Frances Veronica Mary (born 28 Oct, 1969).
