The 2nd Baron Teviot died 15 October, 2023. He was 88.
He was a peer for 55 years, the second holder of the barony (Peerage of the UK, cr 1940). Before inheriting the title Charles Kerr was an extremely ‘posh’ Brighton bus driver on the Hollingdean and Hollingbury routes in Sussex.
Charles John Kerr was born 16 December, 1934, son of Charles Iain Kerr, DSO, MC (1874-1968), scion of the Marquesses of Lothian; DSO 1919; Member of Parliament (Liberal) for Montrose 1932-40; Junior Lord of the Treasury 1937-39; Comptroller of the Household 1939-40; Chairman, National Liberal Organisation 1940 ; Chief Liberal Whip, House of Lords 1945; Ensign, Royal Company of Archers 1945, and his 2nd wife the former Florence Angela Villiers (1904-1979), scion of the Earls of Clarendon.
Charles Kerr succeeded as 2nd Baron Teviot on his father's death, 7 January, 1968. He married 25 September, 1965, Patricia Mary Harris, daughter of Alexander Harris. His bride also worked on Brighton buses as a 'clippie' (a conductress who issued bus tickets), and the marriage was much reported in the British press.
Lord and Lady Teviot had a son and a daughter. The son, the Hon Charles Robert Kerr (born 19 September, 1971), now succeeds to the peerage.
