The marriage took place at St Luke's Church, Chelsea, 27 August, 2022, between the Hon George Edward Charles Diether Cadogan [born 24 September, 1995], scion of the Earls Cadogan, son and heir of Edward Charles Cadogan, styled Viscount Chelsea [born 10 May, 1966], of London, and Katharina Johanna Ingeborg, Viscountess Chelsea [nee Hülsemann], and Davina Rose Motion [born 11 July, 1996], social editor of Tatler, the only daughter of Mr Andrew B. Motion [born circa 1961], of Sandwich, Kent, and his wife the former Celestine M.D. Atkins.

The Hon George Cadogan is a future Earl Cadogan and is heir to the vast Cadogan estates in London. His father is the heir apparent to the 8th Earl Cadogan [born 24 March, 1937].

 Major John Errington, who died 29 August, 2022, aged 104, was a scion of that landed gentry family, of Errington and Beeslack.

 Sir Charles Baird, 6th Baronet, died 14 August, 2022. He was 82.

Charles William Stuart Baird was born 8 June, 1939, son of Robert Walter Stuart Baird (1914-1989), and his first wife the former Maxine Christine Darrell, daughter of Rupert Darrell, of New York, and succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his uncle, Sir David Baird, 5th Bt, 15 November, 2000.

The baronetcy was created in 1809 for Sir David Baird, GCB, PC, a distinguished military commander.

Sir Charles married in March, 1965, Jane Joanna Bridge, daughter of Brigadier Arthur Darley Bridge, by whom he had three daughters, Tara (born 1970), Senta (born 1973), and Petra (1975-2021).

Having no male issue the baronetcy now passes to a fourth cousin, Andrew James Baird (born 23 October, 1970).

Arthur Ponsonby is the son and heir of Sir Charles Ashley Ponsonby, 3rd Baronet (b 10 June, 1951), of Woodstock, co Oxford, by his wife the former ,Mary Priscilla Bromley Davenport.

The Baron Radice, PC 1936-2022

 The Lord Radice, PC, a Labour party politician, life peer and author, died 25 August, 2022. He was 85.

Giles Heneage Radice was born 4 October 1936, son of Lawrence Walter Radice, and his wife the former Patricia Heneage, a descendant of the Barons Petre.

. He served as a Member of Parliament [Lab] from 1973 to 2001, and then as a life peer in the House of Lords from 2001 to 2022. Radice first stood for Parliament at Chippenham in 1964 and 1966, but came third each time. He was elected Labour Member of Parliament for Chester-le-Street from a 1973 by-election to 1983 and then North Durham until his retirement in 2001.

Giles Radice served as Education spokesman in the Labour Shadow Cabinet under Neil Kinnock in the 1980s. As chairman of the Treasury Select Committee, Radice helped make the monetary policy committee of the Bank of England accountable to both Parliament and the people for its decisions over interest rates. He was a member of the House of Lords European Union Sub-Committee on external affairs until March 2015. A europhile, Radice was one of only five Labour MPs to vote for the Third Reading of the Maastricht Treaty in 1993, defying his party Whip, which was to abstain.

He was made a life peer as Baron Radice, of Chester-le-Street in the County of Durham, on 16 July 2001. He announced his intention to retire from the House of Lords on 1 August 2022.

 The Viscountess Tenby, wife of the 3rd Viscount Tenby, has died aged 93.

Ursula Diana Ethel Medlicott was born in London, 20 July, 1929, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Edward Medlicott [1882-1948], of Devizes, Wilts, and later of Nairobi, by his wife the former Clare Charlotte Marjorie Gabrielle Gosselin [d 17 Apr, 1965]; and married 23 April, 1955, the then William Lloyd George [born 7 Nov, 1927], grandson of Prime Minister David Lloyd George, a younger son of Gwilym Lloyd George, TD, PC [1894-1967], also a politician, and Home Secretary 1954-57, created a peer in 1957 as Viscount Tenby. Her husband succeeded as Viscount Tenby on the death of his elder brother, the 2nd Viscount, 14 July, 1983.

David Douglas-Home, son of the former Prime Minister, Sir Alec Douglas-Home [Lord Home of the Hirsel], was a banker, a director of Morgan Grenfell, & sometime chairman of Coutts & Co [until 2013].

David Alexander Cospatrick Douglas-Home was born 20 November, 1943. His father, Alexander Frederick [Alec] Douglas-Home, KT, PC, then styled Lord Dunglass [born 2 July, 1903], was Conservative MP for Lanarkshire, and PPS to the Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain 1935-40. The 14th Earl renounced his peerages of life, 23 Oct 1963, and was elected, as Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Conservative MP for Perthshire and Kinross-shire, and appointed Prime Minister and 1st Lord of the Treasury, a post he held until his defeat to Harold Wilson at the 1964 General Election. He was leader of the Opposition, 1964-65, and Foreign Secretary in the Heath government, 1970-74. In 1974 he was created a life peer as Baron Home of the Hirsel.

David Douglas-Home's mother was Elizabeth Hester Alington [1909-90], whose father had been headmaster of Eton.

David Douglas-Home succeeded to the peerages disclaimed by his father, on the death of Lord Home, 9 October, 1995, and was elected to the House of Lords in 1999, and served for some time on the Conservative front bench.

The 15th Earl was appointed CBE in 1991, and CVO in 1997. In 2014 he was appointed a Knight Companion of the Order of the Thistle, and was installed at St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh.

He married 10 Oct, 1972, Jane Margaret Williams-Wynne [born 20 February, 1949], the second daughter of Colonel John Francis Williams-Wynne, CBE, DSO, of Peniarth, Tywyn, Gwynedd, by whom he had issue, a son, Michael, and two daughters, Lady Iona [born 1980], wife of Viscount Lifford's heir, and Lady Mary [born 1982]. The son, Michael David Douglas-Home, styled Lord Dunglass, who was born 30 Nov, 1987, succeeds as 16th Earl of Home.

Sir Richard Lloyd, 2nd Baronet, died 13 August, 2022. He was 93.

Sir Richard, a banker, was Chief Executive of Williams & Glyn's Bank, 1970-78, Deputy Chairman of Hill Samuel 1978-80, and Chief Executive, 1980-87.

Richard Ernest Butler Lloyd was born 6 December, 1928, son of Maj Sir Ernest Guy Richard Lloyd, 1st Baronet [1890-1987], MP [Unionist] for East Renfrew, 1940-59, by his wife the former Helen Kynaston Greg [died 1984], and he succeeded to the baronetcy [created in 1960], on his father's death in 1987.

Sir Richard married 6 June, 1955, Jennifer Susan Margaret Cardiff, scion of that landed family, daughter of Brigadier Ereld Boteler Wingfield Cardiff, by whom he had issue, three sons, Richard, Simon, and Henry. The eldest son, Richard Timothy Butler Lloyd [born 12 April, 1956], succeeds as third baronet.

He succeeded to the baronetcy [created 1919], on his father's demise, 24 July, 1955, and married 6 Dec, 1958, Marie-Louise Patricia Russell, daughter of Frederic Hooper Russell, of Vancouver, BC, by whom he had issue, two daughters, Nicola [born 27 Oct, 1959], and Alison [born 17 Jan 1965].

There are no male heirs to the baronetcy and it has become extinct with Sir Richard's death.

 Joanna Mary Jamieson (nee Woodall), died 1 August, 2022, aged 87. She was the widow of Major David Auldjo Jamieson, VC, CVO [1920-2001].

Jamieson won the Victoria Cross for the magnificant leadership and courage he displayed in the desperate battle for the bridgehead on the River Orne in Normandy, which had been gained in August 1944 by the men of The Royal Norfolk Regiment during the breakout after the D-Day landings. In a dangerous period, during which his company was repeatedly assaulted by overwhelmingly powerful German armoured forces, Jamieson kept a cool head and displayed resolve and tactical skills which, over a period of 36 hours, held the Norfolk's hard-won position and eventually repulsed the enemy's tanks.

Joanna Mary Woodall was born in London in 1935, daughter of Edward Corbet Woodall [1903-1972], and his wife the former Janet Inez Crawley [1906-1964]; and married firstly, 30 April, 1955 [div 1968], the Hon Richard Archer Alan Windsor-Clive [1928-2014], second son of the 2nd Earl of Plymouth [1889-1943], and his wife the Lady Irene Corona Charteris [1902-89], daughter of the 11th Earl of Wemyss [1857-1937]. Edward Jeremy Westrow Hulse was born 22 November, 1932, son of Sir [Hamilton] Westrow Hulse, 9th Baronet [1909-1996], and his 1st wife the former Philippa Mabel Taylor; and succeeded to the baronetcy [created GB, 1739], on his father's death, 10 April, 1996.

Sir Edward, of Brearmore House, near Fordingbridge, Hampshire, was a Captain, Scots Guards, stockbroker, a deputy lieutenant for Hampshire, and and High Sheriff of Hampshire, 1978.

He married 9 Oct, 1957, Verity Ann Pilkington, daughter of William Lee Pilkington, by whom he had issue, a son, Michael and a dauhter, Camilla. The baronetcy now passes to his son, [Edward ] Michael Westrow Hulse, who was born 10 September, 1959.

 The Hon Mrs Judith Ann Plunket, who died at Harare, Zimbabwe, 1 August, 2022, aged 83, was the mother of Lord Plunket, the 9th Baron.

Judith Ann Power was born c 1939, daughter of Gerard Patrick Power [1894-1954], of Lapworth, Warwickshire, and his wife the former Margaret Alice Clinton [1908-1988]; and married 14 December, 1961, as his first wife, the Hon Shaun Albert Frederick Sheridan Plunket [1931-2012], third son of the 6th Baron Plunket [1899-1938], and his wife the former Dorothé Mabel Lewis [1900-1938].

The 6th Baron and his wife both died in a plane crash in California, 24 February, 1938, and the Plunket children were brought up by his sister, the Hon Helen Rhodes, and her husband, Arthur.

 The Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire, a peer for 81 years, a 'man about town' beloved by newspaper columnists in his hey day, died 5 August, 2022. He was 87.

Michael John James John Robert [Mickey] Howard was born 27 March, 1935, the son of the 20th Earl of Suffolk, GC [1906-1941], and his wife the former Mimi Forde-Pigott [who died 22 Feb, 1966], and was styled Viscount Andover until the death of his father, who was killed defusing an unexploded enemy bomb, 12 May, 1941, aged 35, and awarded a posthumous George Cross.

He succeeded to a string of English peerages - the Earldom of Suffolk [created in 1603], the Earldom of Berkshire [created in 1625], the Viscountcy of Andover [created 1621/22], and the Barony of Howard of Charlton [created with the Viscountcy of Andover], the last territorial designation taken from the family seat, at Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

Lord Suffolk & Berkshire was thrice married; firstly, 1 Oct, 1960 [div. 1967] Mme Simone Paulmier, former wife of Michel Paulmier, and daughter of Georges Litman, of Paris, France. He married 2ndly, 22 September, 1973 [div 1980], Anita Robsahm Fuglesang [later, from 1984, Countess of Harrington, wife of the 12th Earl of Harrington], daughter of Robin Robsahm Fuglesang, of Lacock, Wiltshire, and his wife the former Wendy Whitehead.  The marriage has taken place at Barnbougle Castle, Edinburgh, between Harry Ronald Neil Primrose, styled Lord Dalmeny [born 20 November, 1967], son and heir of the 7th Earl of Rosebery [born 11 February, 1929], and his wife the former Alison Mary Deirdre Reid [born 1931], and Harriet Clapham, daughter of [Ronald] Barrie Clapham [born Sept, 1951], and his wife the former Mari Kirkwood, a 'beauty queen', who was Miss Scotland in 1975.

It is Lord Dalmeny's second marriage. He married firstly, 19 June, 1994, Caroline Daglish, daughter of Ronald Daglish, by whom he has a son, and four daughters.

Viscount Dungarvan is the son and heir of the 15th Earl of Cork & Orrery (b 1945) (Peerage of Ire, cr 1620), of Lickfold, West Sussex, by his wife the former Hon Rebecca Juliet Noble (b 1950) (see Glenkinglas, Life Peerage & Noble Bts).

Viscountess Dungarvan is the younger daughter of Mr Julian C.K. Davy, of St Just in Roseland, Cornwall, by his wife the former Alison S. Black.

Henry Gabriel Richards Pickthorn 1928-2022

 Henry Gabriel Richards Pickthorn, who died 30 July, 2022, aged 93, was a scion of the Pickthorn baronets. 

He was born 29 September, 1928, younger son of Sir Kenneth William Murray Pickthorn, 1st Baronet [1892-1975], and his wife the former Nancy Catherine Lewis Richards [who died 15 Jul 1982].

He married 9 July, 1955, Mary Barton [who died 21 January, 2022], descended from the Viscounts Massereene, daughter of Cecil James Juxon Talbot Barton, CMG, OBE [1891-1980], of Rye, Sussex, and his wife the former Cicely Gladys Bradshaw [1902-40].

He leaves issue, three sons, John, Andrew and Thomas, and a daughter, Henrietta.

The 3rd Baron Wakehurst 1925-2022

 Lord Wakehurst, the 3rd Baron, died 29 July, 2022. He was 96.

[John] Christopher Loder was born 23 September, 1925, son of the 2nd Baron Wakehurst, KG, KCMG [1895-1970], and his wife the former Margaret Tennant [1899-1994], scion of the Tennant baronets, later Barons Glenconner. 

He succeeded as 3rd Baron Wakehurst [Peerage of the UK, cr 1934], on his father's death, 30 October, 1970.

Lord Wakehurst was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple, 1950; Chairman, Anglo and Overseas Trust plc from 1968; and Morgan Grenfell Equity Income Trust plc, since 1991; Director of Morgan Grenfell Latin American Companies Trust; Deputy Chairman of the London and Manchester Group plc; CStJ; late Sub Lieutenant, RANVR, and RNVR; served in WWII in the W Pacific, 1939-45, &c.

He married firstly, 27 October, 1956, Ingeborg Krumbholz, daughter of Walter Otto Krumbholz. His first wife died 14 February, 1977; he married 2ndly, 10 September, 1983, [Francine] Brigid Noble, daughter of William Noble, of Cirecncester, Gloucestershire.

Lord Wakehurst had two children from his first marriage, a son, the Hon Timothy Walter Loder [born 28 March, 1958], who now succeeds to the peerage, and a daughter, the Hon Christina Anne Loder, who died 14 January, 2022, aged 62.

Catherine Mary Hamilton Wills 1950-2022

 Catherine Mary Hamilton Wills, who died 29 July, 2022, aged 71, was a scion of the Wills baronets, later Barons Dulverton.

She was born 23 November, 1950, daughter of Sir [Hugh] David Hamilton Wills, CBE [1917-1999], philanthropist, who established the Ditchley foundation, by his wife the former Eva Helen McMorrough Kavanagh [who died 10 May, 2022, aged 95], scion of that Irish family, and descended from the Buxton baronets.

Catherine Wills was predeceased by a brother, Martin, in 1992.

Lady Butter, CVO 1925-2022

 Lady Butter, CVO, who died in London, 29 July, 2022, aged 97, was a close friend from childhood of the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and a close member of the Queen's inner circle of friends, and one of Her Majesty's last surviving contemporaries.

Descended from Nicholas I, Tsar of Russia, Lady Butter, who lived at Cluniemore, Pitlochry, was a Perthshire philanthropist and trustee of the Butter Charity Trust. 

She was born 8 March, 1925, as Myra Alice Wernher, second daughter of Major-General Sir Harold Wernher, 3rd Baronet, GCVO [1893-1973], of Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire, and his wife the Countess Anastasia Mikhailovna [known as Zia] de Torby, CBE [1892-1977]. Her mother was a daughter of the Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich of Russia [1861-1929], and his morganatic wife Sophie Nikolaievna von Merenberg, Countess de Torby [1868-1927], a descendant of Pushkin. Zia de Torby was granted by Royal Warrant of King George V, 1 Sept, 1917, the style and precedence of the daughter of an Earl, and was thereafter known as Lady Zia Wernher.

Lady Zia Wernher's younger sister Nadejda 'Nada' [1896-1963], married 15 Nov, 1916, Prince George of Battenberg [1892-1938], who took the surname Mountbatten in 1917 and succeeded in 1921 as 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven, and the Marchioness was thus an aunt of Prince Philip of Greece.

The young Prince Philip was close to the Wernher sisters, Georgina, later Mrs Harold Phillips, and Lady Kennard [1919-2011], and to Alice, and he spent much of his youth in their company. The friendship lasted until Prince Philip's demise last year. 

Myra Wernher married 5 November, 1946, at St Margaret's Church, Westminster, Major David Henry Butter, MC [born 18 March, 1920], of the Scots Guards, scion of that landed gentry family, only surviving son of Colonel Charles Adrian James Butter, OBE [1876-1944], of Pitlochry, Perthshire, and his wife the former Agnes Marguerite Clark, who came from Newark, New Jersey. 

Myra's bridal attendants included the nine year-old Princess Alexandra of Kent and the four-year old Prince Michael of Kent. Queen Elizabeth, wife of King George VI, attended the nuptials with the then Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, and Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent.

Her husband served as Lord Lieutenant of Perthshire, 1971-75, and for Kinross 1974-75, and was appointed KCVO. From 1946 until his death, 29 May, 2010, Sir David was chieftain of the Pitlochry Highland Games.

Lady Butter was appointed CVO in 1992.

Lady Butter is survived by a son, Charles [born 10 Apr 1960], and four daughters, Sandra [born 26 July, 1948, a goddaughter of HM The Queen], Marilyn [born 22 Mar 1950, Countess of Dalhousie, wife of the 17th Earl of Dalhousie, Lord Steward of the Household], Rohays [born 9 Apr 1952, wife of Prince Alexandra Galitzine], and Georgina [born 9 July, 1956, wife of Peter von Pejacvsevic].

Lady Butter was aunt to Alexandra Phillips, the late Duchess of Abercorn [1946-2018], wife of the 5th Duke of Abercorn [born 5 Jul 1934], and to Natalia Phillips [born 8 May, 1959], wife of the late 6th Duke of Westminster [1951-2016].

Jamie is a son of Mr & Mrs Michael Forlan, of Hayling Island, Hampshire, & Rosanna, a scion of the Mostyn baronets, is a daughter of Brigadier Philip Joseph Mostyn [born 3 Sept, 1955], of Uplyme, Devon, by his wife the former Helen Catharine Stewart Nickerson [born 9 July, 1959].

 Katherine Rose [Katie] Kennedy [née Crichton-Stuart, born 1979], wife of Robin Moore Sloane Kennedy [born 1976], gave birth to twin sons, Arlo James Sloane and Sebastian Charles Sloane, 12 July, 2022.

Katie Kennedy is a scion of the Marquesses of Bute [Marquess, GB, cr 1796], daughter of [Patrick] James Crichton-Stuart [b 1954], of Bembridge, Isle of Wight, by his first wife the former Amanda Mary Howell Williams.

Elizabeth Anne [Anneli] Drummond-Hay 1937-2022

  Anneli Drummond-Hay, who died in Johannesburg, 31 July, 2022, aged 84, was a scion of that landed gentry family of Seggieden, and one of Britain's top show jumpers. She was the winner of the Burghley Horse Trials in 1961, and the Badminton 3-day event in 1963, and a member of the British Show Jumping team for some years.

She was born Elizabeth Anne [but always known as Anneli] Drummond-Hay, 4 August, 1937, second daughter of Major James Drummond-Hay, JP [1905-1981], of Seggieden and Aberargie, Perthshire, and his wife Lady Margaret Douglas-Hamilton, second daughter of the 13th Duke of Hamilton & Brandon.

At the age of 16, she won the European Pony Championship and was the leading rider of combined training in Britain for three years. She won both Badminton and the first ever Burghley Horse Trials and was 2nd five times. She changed to show jumping and won many Grand Prix competitions including Brussels, Geneva, S’hertogenbosch, Paris, Berlin, Toronto, Chile, Luxembourg, Monaco, Madrid, Mexico, Amsterdam, South Africa, Palermo and Great Britain. She won 2nd in Aachen, Rotterdam and the La Baule Grand Prix. Drummond-Hay won the Rome Derby on two occasions, the Hickstead Derby, the Geneva Derby, the Berlin Derby and the South African Derby twice. She toured America and won the Grand Florida Championship, The Madison Square Garden's Championship and the All American Showjumping Championship. She represented Great Britain for 14 years on the Olympic Nations Cup Team and was awarded the FEI Badge of Honour. She won the European Show Jumping Championship. Was British Sportswoman of the year three times and South African Sportswoman of the Year eight times. Anneli was awarded the “Premio Caprilli” by the Italian Equestrian Federation for her outstanding achievements, abd collected the “Golden Spurs” by the French Federation in conjunction with the Cadre Noir for her contribution to show jumping. She Won the FEI/Samsung World Challenge on four occasions. She holds the ladies' world high jump record at 2.36 meters. The only rider to be shortlisted at Olympic Level in Dressage, Showjumping and 3 Day Eventing for the same Olympic Games. Miss Drummond-Hay trained the Dutch Junior Showjumping Champion in 2000 and 2001 whilst based in the Netherlands. Trained the runner-up in the Junior European 3 Day Event in 2004.
