The Lord Zouche, 18th Baron, died 21 September, 2022. He was 79.

The 18th Baron was born James Assheton Frankland, 23 February, 1943, son of Maj the Hon Sir Thomas William Assheton Frankland, 11th Baronet [born 11 Aug, 1902], son of Sir Frederick William Francis George Frankland, 10th Baronet [1868-1937], and his wife Mary Cecil Curzon [1875-1965], in her own right Baroness Zouche.

James Frankland succeeded to his father's baronetcy, aged only one, 5 Aug, 1944, when the 11th baronet was killed in a motoring accident. On 25 September, 1965, he succeeded to the Barony of Zouche of Haryngworth on the death of his paternal grandmother.

Parliament and the demise of the Crown

A number of events take place in Parliament after the death of the King or Queen Regnant. Some of these are prescribed in legislation; others are a matter of custom and can vary with each demise.

1. Adjournment and reconvening of Parliament

Until 1707, Parliament was immediately dissolved upon the demise of the crown. The Succession to the Crown Act 1707 changed this, stipulating that the parliament could continue for six months following the demise of the crown and that it would immediately meet if it had been adjourned or prorogued. Erskine May states that “the demise of the crown is the only contingency upon which Parliament is required to meet without summons in the usual form”.

The Representation of the People Act 1867 removed the requirement for Parliament to be dissolved at all as a result of the death of the monarch.

The Succession to the Crown Act 1707 provides that if Parliament is adjourned or prorogued when the monarch dies it must meet again as soon as possible.

On 6 February 1952, a Wednesday, the death of King George VI was publicly announced at 10.45am. Both Houses convened at 2.30pm and the death was announced simultaneously in both Houses. The sitting of the House of Commons was then suspended until 7pm that evening, after the first part of the accession council. The House of Lords was adjourned until 7pm.

Both Houses had risen for the day when the death of Queen Elizabeth II was announced at 6.30pm on 8 September 2022. Both Houses then met at 12pm the following day, a Friday, for tributes to the late Queen. Both Houses had been scheduled to sit on that day for consideration of private members’ bills. Both Houses met again on Saturday 10 September 2022 for further tributes.

The Representation of the People Act 1985 sets out what is to happen if the death of the monarch occurs after Parliament has been dissolved but before polling day. In this situation, polling day and the first meeting of the new parliament are postponed by 14 days. If the demise occurs between polling day and the date of meeting appointed in the dissolution proclamation, neither the Representation of the People Act 1985 nor the Succession to the Crown Act 1707 applies.

2. Oath taking

Historically, members of both Houses have taken a new oath before participating in parliamentary business after a demise of the crown. However, this is not a legal requirement. In 1937, following the accession of George VI, the then attorney general, Sir Donald Somervell, stated his opinion that the obligation to take a new oath after a demise of the crown was customary rather than statutory:

The obligation to take a fresh oath to the new sovereign after a demise of the crown in my opinion ceased to be statutory in the eighteenth century. Since then, however, it has been continued by custom of Parliament. Nothing has been suggested to me which would lead me to suppose that the House desires any change.

Erksine May also states that there is no statutory obligation to take the oath after a demise.

The House of Lords requires peers to take a new oath before participating in parliamentary business. The ‘Companion to the Standing Orders and Guide to the Proceedings of the House of Lords’ states that “the oath of allegiance must be taken or solemn affirmation made by all members before they can sit and vote in the House: on introduction; in every new parliament; after a demise of the crown”. The taking of a new oath is optional for MPs.

After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, senior ministers and office holders in both Houses took a new oath in the sittings immediately following the demise.

3. Presentation of addresses

In 1956 and 2022, both Houses agreed messages of condolence to be presented to the new monarch.

After the death of King George VI, on 11 February 1952, the House of Commons received a message from the new Queen. It read:

I know that the House of Commons mourns with me the untimely death of my dear father. In spite of failing health he upheld to the end the ideal to which he pledged himself, of service to his peoples and the preservation of constitutional government. He has set before me an example of selfless dedication which I am resolved, with God’s help, faithfully to follow.

The House of Lords received the same message.

Following the reading of this message in the House of Commons chamber, the then prime minister, Winston Churchill, moved an humble address to the new Queen and also moved motions that messages of condolence be sent to the Queen Mother and Queen Mary, mother of the late King. Similarly, motions on the presentation of an humble address to the Queen and messages of condolence to the Queen Mother and Queen Mary were agreed in the House of Lords. These messages were conveyed in person to the Queen at Buckingham Palace on 13 February 1952.

Messages of condolence to King Charles III following the death of Queen Elizabeth II were delivered in person. Both Houses agreed messages of condolence to the new King in the form of an humble address following members’ tributes. These were presented to King Charles III at a ceremony in Westminster Hall on 12 September 2022. The King then immediately responded to the addresses.

4. Lying in state

The modern custom for deceased sovereigns to lie in state at the Palace of Westminster began upon the death of King Edward VII. After his death in 1910, King Edward VII’s body was taken in procession from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster, where he lay in state for three days and the public were admitted to Westminster Hall to view the coffin. The bodies of King George V and King George VI also lay in state in Westminster Hall where the public were admitted, for four and three days respectively. An estimated 750,000 people attended the lying in state of King George V. Nearly 305,000 people filed past the coffin of King George VI; the queue was approximately four miles long.

After Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral her body lay at rest at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh from 11 to 13 September 2022. The public were permitted to file past the coffin. Her body was then taken to London, where it lay in state in Westminster Hall for nearly five days, from late afternoon on 14 September to the early hours of 19 September 2022. Approximately 250,000 members of the public viewed Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin. At its longest, the queue was 10 miles long. The whole lying in state of Queen Elizabeth II was also broadcast live. In the first two days, over 7.5 million people watched the live stream of the lying in state.

Since King George VI, there have been three further occasions on which public figures have lain in state in Westminster Hall: Queen Mary, wife of King George V and mother of King George VI, in 1953; Sir Winston Churchill, in 1965; and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 2002.

The tradition of members of the royal family participating in vigils for the sovereign’s lying in state was started after the death of King George V, when the new King, Edward VIII, spontaneously decided that he and his brothers would join the guard standing vigil on the catafalque. During the lying in state of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 2002, her four grandsons took part in the vigil. This practice has become known as the Vigil of the Princes.

On 16 September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II’s four children held a vigil around the coffin in Westminster Hall. They had also held a vigil by the coffin as it laid in rest in Edinburgh before being transferred to London. On 17 September 2022, the late Queen’s eight grandchildren also held a vigil around the coffin.

Following the lying in state, the monarch’s body departs Westminster Hall for the funeral. The funerals of King George V and King George VI both took place at Windsor Castle. The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II was held at Westminster Abbey. This was followed by a committal service at Windsor Castle. It has been suggested that Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral was held at Westminster Abbey to accommodate the approximately 2,000 people who attended, including members of the royal family, heads of state from around the world, prime ministers and government representatives.

Lady Mary Russell (nee Baillie-Hamilton) 1934-2022

The Lady Mary Russell, who died 18 September, 2022, aged 88, was one of Queen Elizabeth II's Maids of Honour at the Coronation 1953, and was a scion of the Earls of Haddington.

The Queen's Maids of Honour were aged between 19 and 23 at the time of the Coronation, 2 June, 1953, all just a few years younger than the Queen. The ladies were surprised and enthused in equal measure to receive the invitation from Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk. ‘I was completely gobsmacked,’ uttered Lady Mary, in a later television documentary.

They have described themselves as the 'Spice Girls' of their day - the 'lily white' Maids of Honour chosen to accompany the Queen on her Coronation Day.

Lady Rosemary Spencer-Churchill(born 24 July, 1929), Lady Jane Vane-Tempest-Stewart (born 11 Aug, 1932), Lady Anne Coke (born 16 July, 1932), Lady Mary Baillie-Hamilton (1934-2022), Lady Moyra Hamilton (1930-2020) and Lady Jane Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby (born 1 Dec 1934) were chosen for their 'decorative' beauty as well as their ability to carry the Queen's heavy train.

All six were reunited at Westminster Abbey in 2013 to celebrate sixty years since that momentous day.

"It was overwhelming and moving – especially during the anointing" recalled Lady Mary of the day. "Of all the girls our age in the country we six girls were chosen to carry the Queen's train and that meant a great deal."

She was Lady Mary Baillie-Hamilton, born 13 January, 1934, daughter of the 12th Earl of Haddington (1894-1986), and his wife the former Sarah Muriel Josephine Cook [who died 14 Dec, 1995]; and married firstly, 21 July, 1954 [div 1965], [John] Adrian Bailey (1930-2021), son of Ronald Graham Bailey [1904-67], and his wife the former Annette Winifred Robertson; and married 2ndly, 1 Oct, 1965, David Vernon Russell [born 1929], son of Brigadier Hugh Edward Russell, DSO [1896-1941], and his wife the former Muriel Dorothy Vernon Summers.

She leaves issue from her first marriage, William [born 1957], Philip [born 1959], and a daughter, Arabella [born 1955], wife of the 3rd Viscount Chandos [born 12 Feb 1953]; and from her second marriage, a son, Jason [born 1966], and a daughter, Mariana [born 1968].

The funeral takes place on 10 October, 2022, at Our Lady of Lourdes, Hungerford.

Her husband was a tabloid favourite, not only for his picturesque appearance and peculiar artistic tastes but for his string of mistresses, whom he referred to as his wifelets (he reckoned there to have been around 74 of them).

The Marchioness was the former Anna Gaël Gyarmathy [the actress Anna Gaël], and was born in Budapest, 27 September, 1943, daughter of Laszlo Izsak Gyarmathy, of Los Angeles, California.

The Marquess of Bath admitted that he married partly in order to father a legitimate heir for the family estate, and after fulfilling this duty the Marchioness led a separate life with her own lover in Paris, returning to Longleat for occasional weekends.

Her husband, beloved by the tabloid press as 'the Loins of Longleat' succeeded his father as 7th Marquess of Bath, 30 June, 1992. The family seat at Longleat is one of the best examples of Elizabethan architecture in Britain set in 9,000 Wiltshire acres. Lord Bath died from Covid-19, 4 April, 2020.

The Coronation of King Charles III: who can we expect to see?

We are told in some sources of the media that King Charles III is looking at a greatly slimmed down Coronation, expected to take place within the next twelve months. The practice of inaugurating the new Sovereign, or Head of a people with some special observance has been universal from the earliest times. The character of the observance has varied according to the traditions of the people concerned. It may be a complex of ceremonies extended over a series of days, or just a simple ceremony performed within the space of an hour. It has varied also with the nature of the monarch assumed, whether military or religious, or a combination of the two, or to be solely civil or secular. The obvious appropriateness of the practice is attested by its persistence to the our own time in the 21st century. Not all monarchs in Europe, Scandinavia, or around the world are crowned; but none enters upon the office without formality. Charles III, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northerm Ireland is unique among the rulers of the world in that he will be anointed and crowned with solemn rites and ceremonies which represent more than a thousand years of history and traditions of his people.

Charles III's Coronation will be the first at which the Queen Consort will be crowned since the coronation of the King's grandparents, George VI and Queen Elizabeth, 12 May, 1937. Not all Queen Consorts have been crowned, and we have to look back several centuries for instances where the Queen was not anointed with her husband. King George IV denied his wife, Queen Caroline, a place in Westminster Abbey, and was crowned alone, 19 July, 1821. Weeks later the unfortunate Caroline was dead from a broken heart.

On 20 October, 1714 King George I was crowned alone, having divorced his wife, Sophia Dorothea, twenty years before. Charles III will be the first of his name to see his wife crowned. Henrietta Maria of France, a Roman Catholic, wife of Charles I was prohibited from participating in the rite. Charles II, restored in 1660, and crowned on St George's Day, 1661, was a bachelor, and married the Roman Catholic Catherine of Braganza in 1662. Catherine, a Roman Catholic, was never crowned.

King Henry VIII was crowned with his first wife Catherine of Aragon, 24 June, 1509. Henry's second wife, Anne Boleyn, had her own coronation as Queen Consort, 1 June, 1533.

King Henry VII was crowned 30 October, 1485, before his marriage to Elizabeth of York. He married Elizabeth in 1486, and she was crowned 25 November, 1487.

Elizabeth of York and Anne Boleyn were the last Queen Consorts to be crowned separately from their husbands.

So, who can we expect to participate at the Coronation of the King? The Royal Dukes will be there to 'pay homage' to the King. The Prince of Wales [who is also Duke of Cornwall, Rothesay and Cambridge], will lead here. Royal Dukes are usually the sons or grandsons of the Sovereign. Since the Middle Ages all adult younger sons of the sovereign have been Dukes, with the exception of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Forfar. It is expected that before the Coronation that Edward will be created Duke of Edinburgh, as was agreed on his marriage to Sophie Rhys Jones in 1999. The Duke of Sussex, as the younger son of the Sovereign will also pay homage along with the Dukes of Gloucester and Kent, who are both male line grandsons of King George V. Traditionally, the duke kneels before the monarch and pledge  “to become your liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship; and faith and truth I will bear unto you, to live and die, against all manner of folks.” The Dukes put on their own coronets when the King is crowned with the St Edward's crown. At the 1953 Coronation the Royal Dukes wore Parliamentary robes, but none have been worn since the hereditary element was removed from the House of Lords in 1999.

Princes (who are not peers) and Princesses will be in attendance. The only living adult prince who is not a peer is Prince Michael of Kent, a grandson of George V. The daughters of the Sovereign (Princess Anne, the Princess Royal), and daughters of the sons of the Sovereign, who are princesses of the United Kingdom of Gt Britain and Northern Ireland by birth. They include Princess Beatrice, Mrs Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Eugenie, Mrs Jack Brooksbank, and Princess Alexandra, the Hon Lady Ogilvy. The children of the Earl of Wessex & Forfar (who fall into this category, but do not use the style and title of Royal Highness) ought to have this precedence at the Coronation, but it remains to be seen what the King's wishes are.

Royal Duchesses will be in the abbey to observe the rite from a gallery above the theatre. The Princess of Wales is expected to be joined by the Duchess of Sussex [a royal duchess despite giving up a working royal role], and the Danish-born Duchess of Gloucester, wife of the King's cousin. The Duchess of Kent, in her 90th year, did not attend the State funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, and it is not clear whether she will be present at the King's coronation. Our only 'royal countess', the Countess of Wessex & Forfar will be here with the royal duchesses.

In the ceremony Royal Princesses, and royal duchesses put on their coronets when Queen Camilla is crowned.

As for the clergy, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, will take part, and crown the King with St Edward's Crown. The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, will, if tradition is followed, crown Camilla. Other clergy in the abbey will include the Bishop of London, Dame Sarah Mullally, who will make history as the first female bishop to take part in a Coronation service. The Dean of Westminster, David Hoyle, will preside over the service. It is the role of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster to instruct the King and Queen in the rites and ceremonies of the service. In addition the Dean assists the Archbishop of Canterbury during the ceremony and holds the Eagle Ampulla containing the oil used for the anointing. By ancient right, the honour of putting the Coronation vestments on the King falls to him. The Bishop of Durham supports the King in the abbey.

At previous Coronations a Court of Claims was set up by Order in Council to hear and determine claims of service to be performed at the Coronation. It is expected that a similar court will soon be established.

The Coronation is organised under the watchful eye of the Earl Marshal. The earliest record of the office of Marshal in the 12th century refers to it as held hereditarily by the family of Marshall, from whom it passed to the Bigods, the Mowbrays, and ultimately the Howards, Dukes of Norfolk. The Earl Marshal, one of the Great Officers of State, Edward, the 18th Duke, is the authority responsible for all questions of Arms, dignities, precedence and honour. In these matters he acts through the Officers of the Heralds' College, of which he is the head. He has entire charge of the organisation of the Coronation Ceremony at which [as Premier Duke in England] he renders home to the King on behalf of all dukes.

Other participants include Garter King of Arms, Norroy and Clarenceux King of Arms, Lord Lyon King of Arms [for Scotland], and the splendidly named Bluemantle Pursuivant.

Garter is under the Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk, Head of the Heralds' College. His office was founded in 1417 at a Chapter of the Order of the Garter of which he was then made an Officer, and from which his title is derived. As Chief Heraldic Officer of the Crown of England he has control over all Arms, and the right to grant new Arms is vested in him. At the Recognition [when the King is presented to the people] Garter King of Arms precedes the Great Officers of State.

Clarenceux and Norroy King of Arms are the two Provincial Kings of Arms in England subordinate to Garter. Their jurisdictions lie respectively south and north of the River Trent. Norroy is probably the older of them, dating back to the 14th century, and probably earlier. Before the creation of the office of Garter the Provincial Kings of Arms had sole authority of Arms within their provinces, but they now exercise that jurisdiction in conjunction with Garter.

Scotland does not possess a College of Heralds and Lord Lyon King of Arms is supreme. The office is of great antiquity. Lord Lyon played an important part at the Coronation of Robert II, King of Scots, in 1371. At previous Coronations the Lord Lyon has taken his place [together with the Ulster King of Arms and Scottish and Irish Heralds] in the procession on the arrival of the King and Queen at the abbey.

Bluemantle, who was prominent at the Proclamation of King Charles III, at St James's Palace, is also present on Coronation day. His name is derived from royal badges and emblems.

The Lord High Chancellor of England, who ranks immediately after the archbishops, takes part in the ceremony. This role falls to Brandon Lewis, the Justice Secretary. Traditionally he processes in the abbey attended by his Purse Bearer. Previous holders of the office have been peers, and a page carried his coronet.

The Lord Chief Justice of England takes his place in the procession on the arrival of the King and Queen in Westminster Abbey.

Certain members of the Order of the Garter, though not all, are summoned to represent the body of Knights and Ladies Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. The Queen Consort is a Lady of the Garter. Similarly, some Knights or Ladies of the Order of the Thistle will be present. Knights who are commoners will wear the mantle of the order. Some members of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael & St George, the Royal Victorian Order, and the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire will be invited to attend.

The Master of the Horse is the third of the Great Officers of His Majesty's Household, yielding precedence only to the Lord Chamberlain and the Lord Steward. He has charge of all matters relating to the King's stables, and maintains a large establishment in the Royal Mews, his chief officer being the Crown Equerry. He is responsible for ordering all State processions, in which he rides next behind the sovereign.

Officers of HM's Bodyguard of the Hon Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms - 'the nearest guard' were raised by King Henry VIII in 1509. The corps will be on duty in the abbey and form part of the King's procession.

Officers of the King's Bodyguard of Yeomen of the Guard, instituted by King Henry VII in 1485. They are always on duty at all state occassions, including the State Opening of Parliament and at Coronations, and State funerals.

The Gentlemen of the Royal Company of Archers will be present. King George IV gave them the additional title 'King's Body Guard for Scotland'. They are on duty when the Sovereign is present in Scotland, particularly in Edinburgh.

The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, will process into the abbey in the procession of the King and Queen. Members of the Cabinet will be represented, and the Prime Minister, and former holders of that office. The Lord Speaker [an office not in existence in 1953], is expected to process as the representative of the House of Lords. It is not known whether Westminster Abbey will see a vast turn out of peers and peeresses who for hundreds of years attended upon the monarch at his crowning. The removal of the majority of the hereditary peers in 1999 may well have put an end to this practice, and the creation of life peers did not come about until some years after Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. Perhaps a selection of those hereditary peers now elected to the Lords will receive invitations. The Lord Great Chamberlain for King Charles's reign, Lord Carrington, will be present.

Ambassadors will be present in Westminster Abbey. Our ambassadors to foreign courts, and their representatives at the Court of St James.

Governors-General, Lord Lieutenants of counties, and the Lord Mayor of London will be there. The Mayor of London [an office which did not exist in previous reigns] will be in the abbey.

Others who, at past Coronations, were present include the City Marshall, the Elder Brothers of Trinity House, and the Military Knights of Windsor.

Traditionally the King has four Pages of Honour to carry His Majesty's train. This office can be traced back into early English history when youths of noble birth served an apprenticeship to duties of courtesy and chivalry in the Royal family, advancing in time to be squires and knights. In modern times the King's Pages of Honour have been selected from the sons of senior members of the King's household past and present. In days gone by on their retirement at 16, or whenever they grew too big for their state livery, they were entitled to apply for a King's Cadetship with a view to obtaining a Commission in the Regular Army.

The children of HM's Chapels Royal, as the choir boys are called, augment the Westminster Abbey choir at the service.

HM's Bargemaster and Watermen also process into the abbey. The Bargemaster and two Watermen conduct certain portions of the regalia [Crown Jewels] into Westminster.

The Coronation of King Charles III

Rumours abound regarding the date of King Charles III's Coronation. Saturday June 3 2023 is a date circulating on social media, coming via Bloomberg News. The date is significant because it is the anniversary of the birth, in 1865, of King George V, founder of the Royal House of Windsor, and the great-grandfather of His Majesty the King. Friday June 2 2023, is the 70th anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

In modern times the Sovereign has chosen the date of his his/her Coronation after consulting the Prime Minister and Cabinet. In recent history the date chosen for the Westminster Abbey ceremony has been in late spring or summer. The Coronation of King George IV, took place on 19 July, 1821. Since then all Coronations have taken place in Spring or Summer months. George IV's successor, his brother, William IV, was crowned on 8 September, 1831. Queen Victoria, George V, and Elizabeth II were crowed in June, and Edward VII, whose Coronation was planned for June 1902, was crowned in August, due to a sudden illness.

In modern times the lapse of time between the accession of the monarch and the Coronation has been a year to 18-months. The late Queen ascended the throne on 6 February, 1952, and was crowned sixteen months later on 2 June, 1953. George VI, who succeeded to the throne on the abdication of his elder brother, Edward VIII, chose to be crowned on the date set for his brother's crowning, and was crowned, speedily for modern times, after 5 months.

Of our monarchs since William the Conqueror in 1066, only three were never crowned. The 'Boy King' Edward V, murdered in the Tower of London in 1485, Lady Jane Grey, executed in 1553, and Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne in December, 1936.

Monarchs in the Middle Ages were often crowned days or weeks after succeeding to the throne for obvious reasons. The anointing and crowning of the monarch was hurried through to lend him immediate credence and authority, in an age where the succession was not as secure as it is nowadays.

William the Conqueror was crowned on Christmas Day 1066, weeks after usurping the Crown at the Battle of Hastings. King Stephen was crowned on Boxing Day 1135, three weeks after becoming King. Edward I, unusually, waited almost 2 years to be crowned from Nov 1272 to Aug 1274.

It is thought that the Duke of Norfolk, whose role as Earl Marshal it is to organise great state occasions, has a detailed plan for Charles III's coronation already in place. The Earl Marshal is reported to have had lengthy meetings with the Royal Household in the years since he succeeded as Duke of Norfolk in 2002.

A summer Coronation is surely being considered, and in the summer of 2023. I cannot imagine that the public will be asked to throng the streets and flood into London in their thousands during an autumn or winter month. I cannot see King Charles III, now 73, waiting for 18 months or two years go in State to Westminster Abbey for his crowning, which therefor gives the authorities a very short time period for fixing the date which will fall between late April and mid-September next year. Charles III's beloved grandfather, George VI, was crowned on 12 May, a Friday in 2023. The seventieth anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation, 2 June, is also a Friday. Queen Victoria was crowned on 28 June, 1838, and that date in 2023, is a Wednesday.

The next Coronation will be the first where the Queen Consort is also crowned in almost a century. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth were crowned in 1937.

The Coronation date is always proclaimed with ceremony, and a Coronation Commission convened. In 1952 the commission opened in April, with the Duke of Edinburgh in the chair. Other committees were chaired by the then Duke of Norfolk. We await his Majesty's decision with anticipation.

Alexander Charles Robert Sutherland, styled Lord Strathnaver 1981-2022

Alexander Charles Robert Sutherland, styled Lord Strathnaver, son and heir of the 25th Earl of Sutherland, and heir to the Dunrobin Castle estate, the most northerly stately home in Scotland, has died tragically. He was 40.

Lord Strathnaver was found at the bottom of 30ft cliffs at Thurso East, near the ruined 19th century Thurso Castle in Caithness. Thurso Lifeboat was launched at 11.30pm on Saturday 3 September, 2022,  after reports of a person on the rocks.

A friend said that Lord Strathnaver, who would have celebrated his 41st birthday next month, had been attending the Tunes in the Dunes music festival at Dunnet - mainland Britain's most northerly point - at the weekend. A keen surfer, he also had a house a few miles away at Thurso East, which is a top UK surfing location.

Lord Strathnaver's cousin, Jamie Sutherland Janson, who went to fight against the Islamic State and Levant [Isil] in Syria, took his own life in September, 2019, months after returning from Syria. He was 44.

Lord Strathnaver was born 1 October, 1981, the only son of the 25th Earl of Sutherland [Peerage of Scotland created in 1235] [born 7 January, 1947], and his second wife, the former Gillian Murray. The Earl is Chief of the Clan Sutherland.

His father, the 25th holder of the peerage, succeeded to the titles on the death of his mother, who was 24th Countess of Sutherland in her own right, 9 December, 2019. The Countess left an estate of £18m. The Earldom of Sutherland is one of Scotland's senior earldoms, and the family homes are the magnificent Dunrobin Castle, and the House of Tongue, at Golspie.

Lord Strathnaver was the Earl of Sutherland's only son. The 25th Earl has two daughters from his first marriage in 1968, to Eileen Elizabeth Baker [born Florida, 1943], daughter of Richard Wheeler Baker, of Princeton, New Jersey, which ended in divorce in 1980. The are Lady Rachel Elizabeth Sutherland [born 10 Aug, 1970], and Lady Rosemary Millicent Sutherland [born 10 Sept, 1972]. The Earl also leaves a daughter from his second marriage in 1980, to the current Countess, the former Gillian Murray, Lady Elizabeth Murray St Clair Costin [born 24 April, 1984].

Lord Strathnaver was unmarried. The heir to the peerages is now his eldest half-sister, Lady Rachel, 52.

Lord Strathnavar's younger sister, Lady Elizabeth, is married to Romanian Yacov Costin [born Dec 1971], and they have a son, Isaac Sutherland, born in 2015, a future possessor of the family honours.
