Hon Alexander Peter Balvaird Murray (born 2025)

Charlotte Nevling Murray, styled Viscountess Stormont (nee Clune), wife of William Philip David Mungo Murray, styled Viscount Stormont [born 1 November, 1988], gave birth to a son, the Hon Alexander Peter Balvaird Murray, 27 May, 2025, a brother for the Hon Helier Edward David Mungo, born 20 July, 2023, who is styled the Master of Stormont.

Viscount Stormont is the son and heir of the Earl of Mansfield & Mansfield [born 17 Oct, 1956], of Scone Palace, Perthshire, and his wife the former Sophia Mary Veronica Ashbrooke [born 22 Jan, 1959].

Viscountess Stormont is a daughter of Mr Jonathan E. Clune [born 17 Dec, 1952], of West Hartford, Connecticut, United States, and his wife the former Sarah Potter [born 17 Aug, 1950].

Viscountess Stormont is destined to become chatelaine of Scone Palace. There can be few places of interest in Scotland as historically potent as Scone Palace. When you visit the Palace you are walking in the footsteps of Scotland’s ancient founding fathers, both pagan and Christian. It was an important religious gathering place of the Picts, it was the site of an early Christian church and it housed the Stone of Destiny.

Robert the Bruce was crowned at Scone in 1306, and the last coronation was of Charles II when he accepted the Scottish crown in 1651.

The place of coronation was called Caislean Credi, 'Hill of Credulity', which survives as the present Moot Hill.

Viscount Stormont's father is the 9th Earl of Mansfield, Alexander David Mungo Murray, who succeeded his father in 2015. He is married to Sophia, daughter of Biden Ashbrooke and Veronica Ashbrooke, nee Stourton. Lord Mansfield is also 14th Viscount Stormont and Lord Scone, 12th Lord Balvaird and Hereditary Keeper of Bruce’s Castle of Lochmaben.

In the 9th century, Kenneth MacAlpin established himself as the first true King of Scots. According to legend, he is said to have invited the Pictish King Drostan with all his nobles to banquet with him at Scone. While they were seated, and perhaps taking advantage of their gluttony of both drink and food, the Scots drew out the bolts supporting the boards, whereupon the Picts fell into the hollows below their benches. While caught in some strange contraption up to their knees, they were all slaughtered.

The last coronation in Scotland took place at Scone in 1651 when King Charles II was crowned King of Scots upon the Moot Hill. The Earls following the 3rd Earl all suffered imprisonment, mainly in consequence of their support of the Jacobite cause.

The 4th Viscount Stormont was briefly imprisoned for his part in a fatal duel. The 5th Viscount opposed the Treaty of Union and entertained James Stuart, the Old Pretender, at Scone Palace during the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion, for which he was imprisoned.

The 6th Viscount suffered the same fate when his sisters received the Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie, at Scone during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion.

Julian Bernard Hugh Crandall Hollick 1947-2025

Julian Hollick, who died at his home in France, 6 June, 2025, aged 77, was brother of the Duchess of Leinster.

Julian Bernard Hugh Crandall Hollick was born in 1947, son of Harry Bernard Hollick (1912-1985), and his wife the former Fiona F.M. Purcell (1917-2003), and was a brother of Fiona Mary Francesca Hollick (born 1953), wife since 1972, of the 9th Duke of Leinster (born 7 April, 1948).

Julian was an award-winning producer and writer of radio documentaries about Islam and Asia, including The World of Islam (1981-84), Passages to India (1985-89), Letters from Jitvapur (1991-92), Apna Street (1994-96), Monsoon (1997) and Sadak Chhap (2002). With over twenty years experience reporting on international affairs and producing radio for NPR and the BBC, he had previously been awarded numerous grants by the NEH, NSF, Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, Carnegie Corporation, the UNDP and the Massachusetts Cultural Council for his radio programs. ABC's Peter Jennings has called Julian "the person who taught me about Islam", and by countless Indians (at home and abroad) as "the man who knows more about India than we Indians." (Radio Midday, Mumbai)

"Time is perhaps the most important element in my programs. I try and live for months on end with the people whose stories I want to tell. And return again and again, deepening earlier friendships. The second ingredient is not to look at them through Western eyes. If you ask Western questions you'll get Western answers. Which may be comforting, but tell you absolutely nothing about another culture. And you have to want to know them, to care about them, and treat them as your equals."

Educated at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in France (where he also taught), and the London School of Economics (both in International Relations), he also lectured at the Open University and the University of Ulster, before becoming a print and then radio journalist. He wrote on European politics, Islam and India for newspapers, academic journals and magazines, including Smithsonian Magazine and Arabia, throughout the US, Europe, and the Asian and Arab worlds. He worked on a series about how Muslims in a variety of countries actually integrate their faith into their other identities. The series was called Living Islam and was broadcast nationally, starting in New York City, in Fall 2003.

He leaves a widow Martine (nee Crandall) and two children, a son Jerome Francis Crandall Hollick (born 1975), and Margot.

Lady Marina Windsor engaged to Nico Macauley

A 'royal' engagement has just been announced. The latest member of the House of Windsor to become engaged is Lady Marina Windsor, a granddaughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent. The happy bride to be has shared an Instagram image of the engagement ring and her aristocratic  fiancé, Nico Macauley.

It is not known when Lady Marina and Nico, both 32, started dating though the socialite cousin of the King was first linked to the cyber security account executive in 2023, when she posted a selfie with Nico to mark his 30th birthday. Lady Marina recently has shared images on Instagram featuring Nico in a loving embrace at last year’s Glastonbury festival.

Nico Julian Macauley (born 6 April, 1993), is the elder son of the late William Francis Macauley (born 30 Sept, 1953), and his wife the former Nicola Jane Thompson. In 1926, the Berry brothers/Allied Newspapers purchased Amalgamated Press (AP), which had been started by Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe, in 1901 (Harmsworth had died in 1922).

Berry bought out his partners in 1937 and amalgamated The Morning Post with The Daily Telegraph, with himself as chairman and editor-in-chief. His sons Seymour, the 2nd Viscount, and subsequently Michael, continued to run the newspaper until 1986; in addition, Seymour was Vice Chairman of Amalgamated Press from 1942 to 1959 (when AP was acquired by the Mirror Group).

The Countess of Wemyss & March 1943-2025

The Countess of Wemyss and March died 22 May, 2025. She was 82.

The countess was the wife of the 13th Earl of Wemyss and 9th Earl of March, of Stanway House, Cheltenham, and Gosford House in East Lothian.

The countess led a lifelong campaign for the approval of trepanation and research into the medical benefits of psychedelic drugs. Trepanning, as the operation is known, is an ancient practice. There is evidence of its existence in neolithic times. However, unsurprisingly, when a healthy and elegant upper-class young woman decided to self-trepan and have the operation filmed, it raised questions about her sanity. Within hours of completing the procedure, Feilding, dressed in a Moroccan kaftan, her bandages concealed beneath a silk turban, attended a cocktail party with her pet pigeon, Birdie, perched on her shoulder.

The combination of trepanning and her interest in researching the medical benefits of administering microdoses of LSD led her to being known for more than 60 years by such pejorative sobriquets as “Lady Mindbender” and “the Crackpot Countess” as well as laudatory ones such as “the Queen of Consciousness”.

She was born 30 January, 1943, as Amanda Claire Marian Feilding, scion of the Earls of Denbigh, 3rd daughter of of Basil Percy Terence Henry Feilding (1903-86) (by his wife and cousin Margaret Mary Feilding (1908-89), 3rd dau. of Lt Col Rowland Charles Feilding DSO, of Stoke House, Slough, co. Berkshire), 1st son of Percy Henry Feilding (by his wife Clotilde Brewster, only dau. of Henry Brewster, of Rome, Italy), 2nd son of Gen Hon Sir Percy Robert Basil Feilding KCB, of Broome Park, Betchworth, co. Surrey (by his wife Lady Louisa Isabella Harriet Thynne, 1st dau.7of Henry Frederick [Thynne], 3rd Marquess of Bath), 2nd son of William Basil Percy [Feilding], 7th Earl of Denbigh. She married 1stly, 1968 (div 1993), Joseph Chase Hurt Mellen; & married 2ndly, 29 December, 1995, then then James Donald Charteris, styled Lord Neidpath (born 22 June, 1948), son and heir of the 12th Earl of Wemyss & March, KT (1912-2008), and his first wife the former Mavis Lynette Gordon Murray (who died 1988). Her second husband succeeded his father, 12 Dec, 2008, as Earl of Wemyss (Scotland, let. pat. 25 Jun 1633), Earl of March (Scotland, let. pat. 20 Apr 1697), Viscount of Peebles (Scotland, let. pat. 20 Apr 1697), Lord Wemyss of Elcho (Scotland, let. pat. 1 Apr 1628), Lord Elcho and Methhil (Scotland, let. pat. 25 Jun 1633), Lord Douglas of Neidpath, Lyne and Munard (Scotland, let. pat. 20 Apr 1697), Baron Wemyss, of Wemyss in the County of Fife (United Kingdom, let. pat. 17 Jul 1821).

From her first marriage she leaves issue, 2 sons, Rock Basil Hugo Feilding Mellen (born 10 Apr, 1979), and Cosmo Birdie Feilding Mellen (born 25 January, 1985).

A ducal discovery

Sharon Burgess-Close, a 66 year-old musician and dancer, living in Geelong, Australia, had the surprise of her life went she appeared on an Australian TV show 'The Secret DNA of Us', a programme that features participants who give DNA samples to discover family relationships.

One hundred applicants were chosen from the Geelong area to participate and among several people highlighted in the episode was Sharon Burgess-Close, who had grown up never knowing who her father was.

Born in the UK in January, 1959, Sharon learned early on about her mother Linda's colourful life.

In the early 1960s Linda (whose birth name was Dina) was a dancer at the famous Murray's Cabaret, in London's Soho, and is reported to have shared a flat with Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies, who were known for their central role in the Profumo Affair, the political scandal of  1963 centred around John Profumo, MP, Minister without Portfolio, a leading member of the Macmillan government.

Sharon's mother died in 2024 without ever revealing the identity of Sharon's father. So when she saw the advertisement on social media seeking participants for the SBS show she thought at last she might finally discover the identity of her father. Was he perhaps one of the high society aristocrats, or famous actors who frequented the Murray's Cabaret club?

A hundred Geelong folk gathered together and gave DNA samples and then it was a waiting game while their DNA was analysed. Some eight weeks later, Sharon received a call asking if she could make herself available for two days of filming. So, it was with some trepidation that Sharon met the production team at the Federal Mills to learn what they had discovered. Firstly, producers handed Sharon a photograph and told her 'This is your grandmother.' She was an American heiress, Clothilde Quigley, who came to the UK to make an aristocratic marriage.  While still processing this information, Sharon was handing a newspaper clipping that revealed her father's name, - William James Cavendish-Bentinck, a scion of the now extinct Dukes of Portland. Sadly, this newspaper article also revealed her father had died 4 September,1966, at the age of 42, without any legitimate offspring. If he had lived to survive his father he would have become 10th Duke of Portland.

William Cavendish-Bentinck, the thrice married descendant of the Dukes of Portland, was born 6 July, 1925, the only son of the diplomat Victor Cavendish-Bentinck (1897-1990), Assistant Under Secretary of State, Foreign Office 1944;  Ambassador Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Poland 1945-47, and his first wife, Clothilde Quigley, from whom he was divorced in 1948. In 1977 Victor's elder brother, Ferdinand, succeeded a cousin as 8th Duke of Portland, and upon the 8th duke's death without a male heir, 13 Sept, 1980, Victor succeeded as 9th (and last) Duke.

Sharon burst into tears, overwhelmed by emotion. In a few short moments she had found her family and lost them all at once. There were more surprises in store as Sharon was told that Queen Elizabeth II's grandmother was related to her father, and her maiden name was also Cavendish-Bentinck, and King George VI and the Queen Mother were also her father's godparents. Burke's Peerage does not show that William was a godson of either King George or Queen Elizabeth, and such details are usually recorded. Victor however was a close friend of his royal cousin, Queen Elizabeth. On Victor's death, 30 July, 1990, the Dukedom of Portland became extinct, but the Earldom of that name passed to a distant kinsman, Henry Bentinck.

Finding out about her father and his mother and her royal connections (she is a fifth cousin of King Charles III), has given Sharon answers to who she is. She said she always felt like something was missing and she had no identity.

Victor, the .9th Duke was also father of a daughter, Lady Mary Jane Cavendish-Bentinck (born 16 December, 1929, who died 1 March, 2010), who married twice,  and was mother of two sons, Sharon's cousins, William and David Georgiades. Whether she reaches out to meet them or not, Sharon is not sure. She doesn't want to upset anyone, but would love to meet someone who knew her father, who could tell her more about him, what he was really like?

For now, Sharon will simply continue on with life as she knew it, performing with her husband Paul in their two-piece band PASH. The experience has been a positive one for Sharon. There is now closure of sorts.

See the Geelong episode of The Secret DNA of Us on SBS on demand. The show continues region by region on Thursdays at 7:30pm."

Funeral of the Dowager Countess of Strathmore & Kinghorne

From the Court Circular 16 May 2025:

The King was represented by the Earl of Airlie, KT at a Service of Thanksgiving for the Dowager Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne which took place at St Fergus Kirk, Glamis, Angus, this afternoon.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were represented by the Earl of Dalhousie.

The Princess Royal was represented by Mrs David Bowes-Lyon.

Surely, some mistake? The late Earl of Airlie was a Knight of the Thistle. He died 26 June, 2023. The current Earl, present at Lady Strathmore's funeral, has not received the Thistle, and has not been bestowed with any other order of chivalry. Perhaps to make amends His Majesty might now despatch the Thistle to Lord Airlie?
