Elizabeth, Countess of Scarbrough, LVO, who died in London, 10 December, 2025, aged 84, was a Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and widow of the 12th Earl of Scarbrough, of Sandbeck Park, Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
She was born into a family steeped in royal service. Born Lady Elizabeth Anne Ramsay, 16 September, 1941, daughter of the 16th Earl of Dalhousie, KT, & his wife the former Margaret Elizabeth Mary Stirling (1914-1997), scion of the Stirlings of Keir. Her courtier father served as Lord Chamberlain to the Queen Mother and was a Knight of the Thistle.
She was a niece of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir David Stirling, DSO, OBE (1915-90), who created the SAS, & a first cousin of Archibald Stirling of Keir who married the actress Dame Diana Rigg. Another cousin, Hannah Stirling, is the Marchioness of Salisbury.
She married 9 July 1970, Richard Aldred Lumley, 12th Earl of Scarbrough (born 5 Dec, 1932), a Yorkshire landowner, of Sandbeck Park, South Yorkshire. Her husband’s father, the 11th Earl of Scarbrough, KG, who died in 1969, was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, and his wife Katharine, Countess of Scarbrough (1899-1979), was a life-long friend of the Queen Mother and one of her longest serving ladies in waiting ( peeresses in the household were known as Ladies of the Bedchamber, whilst more lowly ranking members of the team were Women of the Bedchamber).
Elizabeth Scarbrough joined the Queen Mother’s household in 1994 and served Her Majesty until her death in 2002. She was appointed LVO in 2002 following Queen Elizabeth’s death.
Her younger sister, Lady Sarah Keswick, a great friend of Queen Camilla, joined the Royal Household as one of Queen Camilla’s Queen’s Companions, as ladies in waiting are now styled.
Her brother, James, 17th Earl of Dalhousie, GCVO, was Lord Steward to the Household of Queen Elizabeth II and to King Charles III,
She was widowed 23 March, 2004. The funeral of the Countess will take place at Sandbeck Park, 9 January, 2026, after a Requiem Mass at St Mary’s, Cadogan Street, SW3 on 5 January.
The Dowager Countess leaves two sons, the 13th Earl, and the Hon Thomas Lumley.
