Nigel Robert Elwes, who died 13 December, 2021, aged 80, was head of that landed gentry family of Congham.
He was born 8 August, 1941, son of Capt Robert Philip Henry Elwes [1917-76], and his wife the former Vivien Elizabeth Mary Smith [1920-2006], scion of the Smith landed family of Midhurst, and thus kin of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
He married 22 June, 1965, Carolyn Peta McAlpine [born 1944], scion of the McAlpine baronets, daughter of Sir Robin McAlpine, Kt, CBE [1906-93], and his wife the former Nora Constance Perse [whop died 29 Sept, 1966], by whom he had issue, a son, Andrew [b 19 Nov, 1969], who succeeds as head of the family, and two daughters, Serena [b 1967], and Melisa [b 1973].
