The 4th Earl of Selborne, GBE, FRS, DL 1940-2021

 _. The Earl of Selborne, GBE, FRS, DL, died at his home 12 February, 2021. The ecological expert and businessman was 80.

John Roundell Palmer was the 4th Earl of Selborne, Viscount Wolmer and Baron Selborne. He served as Chancellor of Southampton University, and was President of the Royal Geographical Society [with the Institute of British Geographers].

He was one of the hereditary peers elected to remain in the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999, sitting as a Conservative. He re-designated as non-affiliated in September 2019 and retired from the House on 26 March 2020.

He was born 24 March, 1940, his father, William Matthew Palmer, styled Viscount Wolmer [1912-42], was accidentally killed by a shell on active service, in Oct 1942. His mother, the former Priscilla Egerton-Warburton [1915-2010], was a scion of that landed gentry family.

He succeeded to the three peerages on the death of his grandfather, the 3rd Earl of Selborne, 3 Sept, 1971.

Lord Selborne married 19 December, 1969, Diana van Antwerp James [born 1946], daughter of Evan Maitland James [1911-2008], of Upwood Park, Abingdon, by whom he had three sons, William, Luke and George, and a daughter, Emily.

He was appointed KBE in 1987, advanced to GBE in 2011, FRS 1991.

The eldest son, William Lewis Palmer, styled Viscount Wolmer [born 1 Sept, 1971], succeeds as 5th Earl of Selborne.
