The Baron Eden of Winton, PC 1925-2020

_. Lord Eden of Winton, PC, life peer, politician, died 23 May, 2020, He was 94.

Eden was the last surviving MP to have been elected before the 1955 General Election.

John Benedict Eden was born 15 September, 1925, son of Sir Timothy Calvert Eden, 8th & 6th Baronet [1893-1963], by his wife Patricia [who died 1990], daughter of Arthur Prendergast.

John was a nephew of Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon, KG [1897-1977], Prime Minister 1955-57.

He succeeded his father in the baronetcies, [Bt, England 1672, and Bt GB, 1776] 13 May, 1963; married 1stly 28 Jan, 1958 [div 1974], Belinda Jane, daughter of Sir John Pascoe, by whom he had two sons and two daughters; married 2ndly, 8 Jan, 1977, Margaret Anne, Viscountess Strathallan, former wife of John Eric, Drummond, Viscount Strathallan [later 18th Earl of Perth], and daughter of Robert Gordon.

Career: Eden was Conservative MP for Bournemouth West, 1954-83; Member of the House of Commons Select Committee on Estimates 1962-64; Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party Defence Committee 1963-66; Opposition front bench Spokesman for Defence, 1964-66; Opposition front bench spokesman for Power, 1968-70; Minister of State, Ministry of Technology June-Oct 1970; Minister for Industry, Dept of Trade & Industry, 1970-72; Minister for Posts and Telecommunications, 1972-74; Chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee on European Legislation, 1976-79;  &c.

Sir John Eden was sworn of the Privy Council in 1972.

On leaving the Commons he was created a life peer taking the title Baron Eden of Winton, of Rushyford in the County of Durham, 1983.

The baronetcies now pass to his elder son, the Hon Robert Frederick Calvert Eden, who was born 30 April, 1964.
