The Baron Fellowes, GCB, GCVO, QSO, PC, who has died aged died 82, was private secretary to Queen Elizabeth II, and brother-in-law of Diana, Princess of Wales.
Robert Fellowes was Private Secretary to the Queen 1990-99, having been deputy private secretary from 1986, and a member of the Royal Household from the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year in 1977.
He was born at Sandringham, 11 Dec, 1941, elder son of the land agent to King George VI at his Norfolk country estate, Sir William Fellowes (1899-1986), scion of that landed gentry family, and his wife Jane Charlotte Ferguson (1912-86), scion of that landed gentry family, and a great-aunt of Sarah Duchess of York.
He married in 1978, the Lady Cynthia Jane Spencer (born 11 February, 1957), 2nd daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer (1924-1992), of Althorp House, Northampton, and his first wife the Hon Frances Ruth Burke Roche (1936-2004), scion of the Barons Fermoy, by whom he had issue, a son the Hon Alexander Fellowes (born 23 March, 1983), and two daughters, the Hon Laura (born 19 July, 1980), and the Hon Eleanor (born 20 Aug, 1985).
Fellowes was sworn of the Privy Council in 1990, and was an Extra Equerry to Queen Elizabeth II until Her Majesty’s death in 2022. He was Secretary & Registrar, Order of Merit 2003-2022.
