Commander (Leslie) Michael Macdonald Saunders Watson, CBE 1934-2022

 Commander Michael Saunders Watson, CBE, who died 8 November, 2022, aged 88, late Chairman of the British Library Board, was owner of Rockingham Castle, Northamptonshire.

He was born 9 Oct, 1934, son of Capt Leslie Swain Saunders, and his wife the former Elizabeth Culme-Seymour (1904-1963), daughter of Vice-Admiral Sir Michael Culme-Seymour, 4th Baronet, MVO (1867-1925).

He assumed the additional surname of Watson on succeeding in 1967 to the Rockingham Castle estate of his uncle, Sir Michael Culme-Seymour, 5th Bt (1909-99).

He married 13 Dec, 1958, Georgina Elizabeth Laetitia Davis (1935-2020), daughter of Admiral Sir William Wellclose Davis, GCB (1901-87), scion of that landed gentry family, and his wife the former Lady Gertrude Elizabeth Phipps (1908-85), daughter of the 3rd Marquis of Normanby (1846-1932), and his wife the former Gertrude Foster (d 1948).

Cdr Saunders Watson leaves two sons, James (born 14 Sept, 1961), now of Rockingham Castle, and David (born 1968), and a daughter, Fiona (born 1965).
