Margaret Griswold Herbert (née Lewis) died 16 March, 2026, aged 87.
She was a daughter of the Hon Geoffrey Whitney Lewis (1910-1992), a US diplomat, of Maine, United States, and his wife the former Elizabeth Merrill Locke (1914-2009); and married 1960 (div. 1988), as his first wife, Robin Arthur Elidyr Herbert, CBE (1934-2024), scion of that landed gentry family, son of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Arthur Herbert, GCIE (1895-1943), and his wife Lady Mary Theresa Fox-Strangways (1903-1948), Woman of the Bedchamber to HRH The Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) 1944-1948, daughter of the 6th Earl of Ilchester, GBE (1874-1959), by whom she had two sons, Ben and Richard, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Susannah.
