_. Hugh Damian Elwes, who died 20 December, 2020, aged 77, was a scion of that landed family, of Roxby.
He was born 27 September, 1943, the second son of Lieutenant-Col Sir Richard Everard Augustine Elwes, OBE [1901-1968], and his wife the former Mary Freya Sykes [1904-94], daughter of Sir Tatton Sykes, 6th Baronet [1879-1919], of Sledmere.
Hugh's elder brother was the actor Mark Gervase Elwes, and his sister, Mary Freya [known as Polly] [1928-87], was the BBC TV-in announcer, and panellist on What's My Line.
He married in 1974, Susan A. Buchanan, daughter of D.W.J. Buchanan, of Sydney, New South Wales, by whom he had two daughters, Chloe [born 1978], and Sophia [born 1984].
