_. The Lord O'Neill of Clackmannan, a Labour life peer, died 26 August, 2020. He was 75.
Martin John O'Neill was born 6 January, 1945, son of John and Minnie O'Neill, and educated at Trinity Academy, Edinburgh, and Heriot Watt University, and Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh.
Career: Insurance Clerk, Scottish Widows Fund 1963-67; Assistant Examiner, Estate Duty Office of Scotland, 1971-73; Teacher of Modern Studies, Boroughmuir High School, Edinburgh, 1974-77; Craigmount High School, Edinburgh, 1977-79; Social Science Tutor, Open University 1976-79; Labour MP for Stirlingshire, East and Clackmannan 1979-83, Labour MP for Clackmannan 1983-97, Labour MP for Ochil 1997-2005.
He served as Opposition Spokesman on Scottish Affairs, 1980-84; Opposition Spokesman on Defence matters, 1984-88, on Energy 1992-95; Chief Opposition Spokesman on Defence, 1988-92; Member of the Select Committee on Scottish Affairs 1979-80; was Chairman Select Committee on Trade & Industry from 1995, &c.
He was raised to the peerage for life in 2005 as Baron O'Neill of Clackmannan.
He married in 1973, Elaine Marjorie Samuel, by whom he had two sons.
