The Lord Donaldson of Lymington, PC, Master of the Rolls, 1982-92, died suddenly at his home in Lymington, Hampshire, 31 August, 2005. He was aged 84.

John Francis Donaldson was born 6 October, 1920, the son of Malcolm Donaldson, FRCS, FRCOG, by his wife Evelyn Helen Marguerite Maunsell, and was educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College, Cambridge (Hon. Fellow, 1983).
Career: - ->Commissioned into the Royal Signals, 1941; served with the Guards Armoured Divisional Signals, in the UK and NW Europe, 1942-45; and with the Military Government, Schleswig-Holstein, 1945-46; Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel, 1946; Called to the Bar at the Middle Temple, 1946; Harmsworth Law Scholar, 1946; Bencher 1966; Treasurer, 1986; Member, General Council of the Bar, 1956-61, 1962-66; Junior Counsel to the Registrar of Restrictive Trading Agreements, 1959-61; QC 1961; Deputy Chairman, Hampshire Quarter Sessions, 1961-66; Member of the Council on Tribunals, 1965-66; Judge of the High Court, Queen's Bench Division, 1966-79; President, National Industrial Relations Court, 1971-74; a Lord Justice of Appeal, 1979-82; Chairman of the Inquiry into the prevention of pollution from merchant shipping, 1993-94; Member, Procedure Committee, House of Lords, from 2003; President, Parliamentary Maritime Group, from 2003; President, Council of Inns of Court, 1987-90; President, Carthusian Society, 1978-82; Vice-President, British Maritime Law Assoc, 1969-78; Chairman, Advisory Council on Public Records, 1982-92; Chairman, Magna Carta Trust, 1982-92; Chairman, Financial Law Panel, 1992-2002; Chairman, Appeals Panel, London Metal Exchange, 2003- ; he held honorary degrees from numerous universities, &c.
Donaldson was knighted in 1966; sworn of the Privy Council, 1979; created a life peer as Baron Donaldson of Lymington, of Lymington in the County of Hampshire, 1988.
He married in 1945, Dorothy Mary (Dame Mary Donaldson, GBE, Lord Mayor of London, 1983-84) daughter of Reginald George Gale Warwick, by his wife Dorothy Alice. She died in 2003.
Lord Donaldson leaves a son, Michael, and 2 daughters.
