35th Baron Kingsale (1941-2005)

The 35th Baron Kingsale, Premier Baron in the Peerage of Ireland, died at his home, 15 September, 2005 he was aged 64.
An eccentric bachelor, Lord Kingsale was successively a Guards officer; a bingo caller, a bar worker; a kitchen fitter and plumber; he succeeded his grandfather in the peerage in 1969 (by some reckoning he was the 30th Baron and not the 35th).
John de Courcey was born in 1941, a grandson of the 34th Baron. The peerage was created in 1223. His home for many years was at Upton Noble, Somerset.
The Barony of Kingsale is one of the most ancient peerage titles in the British Isles. The Barony, in the Peerage of Ireland dates to the thirteenth century, perhaps being created circa 1223, though other sources give different dates. The first creation was by writ. The title was officially confirmed by letters patent in 1397. The numbering of the barons varies, some sources including the holders of the ancient barony, others commencing with the barons confirmed by letters patent.
The Baron also holds the feudal titles of Lord Courcy and Lord Ringrone, probably created in the twelfth century. Several sources claim that the Baron holds the privilege of being covered (that is, wearing a hat) in the presence of the monarch. The Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, however, disagrees, claiming that the story "is a legend without historic foundation"I have more information on the life of the late Lord Kingsale. He was born posthumously, 27 January, 1941, son of Lieutenant-Commander the Hon. Michael John de Courcy, RN [who was killed on active service in 1940], by his wife Joan, daughter of Robert Reid, and was educated at Stowe, and the universities of Paris and Salzburg.

Succeeded his grandfatgher in 1969 as 35th Baron, and Baron of Ringrone. Debrett's says the peerage was created about 1340, and has precedence from 1397. most recent abode was at Nunney, near Frome, Somerset.
He is succeeded in his peerages by his kinsman, a descendant of the 20th Baron, Nevinson Mark de Courcey, who was born 11 May 1958.
