The Baroness Howard De Walden, who died 13 July, 2024, aged 88, was a peeress in her own right, the 10th holder of the peerage, created by Queen Elizabeth I in 1597.
The barony of Howard de Walden was created by writ of summons in 1597 by Queen Elizabeth I for Admiral Lord Thomas Howard, a younger son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, by his second wife, the Honourable Margaret Audley, daughter of Thomas Audley, 1st Baron Audley of Walden. The title was reputedly granted for the admiral's role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588.
The 10th holder of the peerage was born (Mary) Hazel Caridwen Scott-Ellis, 12th August, 1935, the eldest of the four daughter of the 9th Baron Howard de Walden, and 5th Baron Seaford (1912-1999), by his wife Countess Irene Maria Rosario Pauline von Harrach of Rohrau and Thannhausen (who died 1975), 5th daughter of Count Hans-Albrecht von Harrach of Rohrau and Thannhausen by his wife Countess Helene von Arco-Zinneberg.
Her father, a renowned racehorse owner, died 9 July, 1999, when his Barony of Howard de Walden (created by Writ) fell into abeyance between his four daughters, Hazel, Susan, Jessica and Camilla, and the Barony of Seaford (Peerage of the UK, cr 1826) passed to a male heir.
On 25 June, 2004, the Barony of Howard de Walden was called out of abeyance in favour of the 9th Baron's eldest daughter.
Lady Howard de Walden married 20 Nov, 1957, Count Joseph Czernin von und zu Chudenitz (1924-2015), only son of Count Franz Joseph Czernin von und zu Chudenitz (1878-1963), by whom she had issue, one son, Peter, and five daughters, Charlotte, Henrietta, Alexandra, Philippa and Isabelle. Her only son, the Hon Peter John Joseph Czernin, (Count Czernin von und zu Chudenitz), who was born 1 January, 1966, now succeeds as the 11th Baron Howard De Walden.
