Colonel Sir James Stirling of Garden, KCVO, CBE, TD 1931-2024

 Colonel Sir James Stirling of Garden, KCVO, CBE, TD, who died 22 July, 2024, aged 93, army officer, and Lord Lieutenant of Stirling & Falkirk, 1983-2005.

He was educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Cambridge; commissioned into the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in 1950; served in Korea and was wounded and transferred to the 7th Bn, TA; he was a chartered surveyor in private practice, partner in K. Ryden and Partners 1962-89; Hon Sheriff of Stirling, 1998; Deputy Lieutenant 1970, Vice-Lieutenant 1979-83; Chairman, Highland TAVR Assoc 1982-87 (President 1992); Hon Colonel 3/51st Highland Volunteers, TA 1979-1986; Knight of St John 1987 (sometime Prior, Order of St John, Scotland).

He was born 8 September, 1930, son of Colonel Archibald Stirling of Garden, OBE (1885-1947), and his wife the former (Amelia) Marjory Lily MacLaren Stewart of Ardvorlich (1902-2002).

He married in 1958, Fiona Janetta Sophia Wood Parker (born 1937), daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Douglas Alwyn Charles Parker, OBE, TD (1911-1968), scion of that landed gentry family, by his wife the former Janetta Verona Lockett (1911-1984), scion of that landed gentry family, by whom he had issue, two sons and two daughters.

Sir James's home was at Garden, Buchlyvie, Stirlingshire. He was appointed CBE in 1987, and made a Knight of the Royal Victorian Order in 2006 following his retirement as Lord Lieutenant.
