Colonel Anthony John [Tony] Aylmer, Irish Guards, died 25 January, 2022, aged 96.
Tony Aymer was born 7 October, 1925, son of Major John Wyndham Aylmer, MC [1889-1953], 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, of Courtown House, Co Kildare, and his wife the former Edith Margaret Loder [1892-1964], scion of the Loder baronets; and married 16 September, 1961, Shaunagh Christine Guinness [1934-2010], scion of the eponymous brewing family, daughter of Richard Smyth Guinness [1888-1979], and his wife the former Esmé Patricia Chapman [1903-86], and had issue, two sons, and two daughters.
Colonel Aylmer, who served with the Irish Guards for 37 years, served in Germany, Palestine and Aden after helping to shelter British pilots in Co Kildare. He commanded a platoon at 19 and was later assistant to Earl Mountbatten of Burma, Chief of the Defence Staff
In 1950 he was appointed ADC to Lieutenant General (later Field Marshal) Sir Gerald Templer. On the death of King George VI in February, 1952, he was chosen to undertake a vigil at the Lying-in-State and then to be the marshal of the gun carriage for the procession to Paddington Station. He became adjutant of the 1st Battalion in BAOR but returned to London as part of the Guard of Honour for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, in June, 1953. He was Deputy Lieutenant for the Isle of Wight from 1990 to 2000.
