Isaac and Ida Shard [born 2009]

_. Lady Emily Tsering Shard [nee Lascelles, born 23 Nov, 1975], wife of Matthew Shard, and scion of the Earls of Harewood, gave birth to twins, a son, Isaac, and a daughter, Ida, in 2009.

Lady Emily is the eldest child & only dau of David Henry George Lascelles, 8th Earl of Harewood (b Oct 1950), by his first wife the former Margaret Rosalind Messenger (b 1948), and a granddaughter of the 7th Earl of Harewood, KBE (b 1923), a first cousin of HM The Queen.

Lady Emily Shard, born before the marriage of her parents, and legitimated upon their marriage, is, however, not in the line of succession to the Throne.

Death of Rear-Admiral Sam Salt, who commanded HMS Sheffield in the Falklands War

the Salt Baronets (cr UK 1899, of Standon) who died 3 December 2009,
aged 69, commanded HMS Sheffield - the first British warship to be
sunk by enemy action after the Second World War

James Frederick Thomas George Salt, always known as Sam, was born 19
April 1940, six months before his father Lt-Cdr George Stevenson Salt
(b 1908), was lost in the submarine Triad which sailed from Malta for
war patrol in the Gulf of Taranto and was never heard from again.
Sam's mother was the former Lilian Bridget Francis.
Rear-Adml Salt married in1975, Penelope Walker, daughter of Anthony
Walker. She survives him with their three sons; another son
predeceased him. Sam's sister is Lady Spencer-Nairn, wife of the 3rd
Baronet, &c.

Memorial Service will be held at the Church of St. Giles, Maisemore, Gloucestershire on Friday, 8th January, 2010.

She is survived by her husband and by her children from her 1st marriage, Lisa, Marianna, Katharine and Antonia. The funeral takes place at St Mary's, Goudhurst, 14 Dec.

Hammick, and married Sir Peter, 16 Jul 1949. He died 16 Jan 1998.

St Mary's Church, Woodbridge.

Rodolphe is a son of Mr Octavian Charles Hugo von Hofmannsthal (b. 1946), and Mrs von Hofmannsthal, and Lady Frances is the only child of the 1st Earl of Snowdon, GCVO (b. 1930), by his 2nd wife, the former Lucy Mary Davies.

Rodolphe von Hofmannsthal is a great-grandson of the 6th Marquess of Anglesey. Rodople's father is a son of Raimund von Hofmannsthal (d. 1974), who married (as his second wife) in 1939, the Lady Elisabeth Hester Mary Paget (b. 1916), daughter of the 6th Marquess of Anglesey (1885-1947)

leaves issue, inc dau, Nicola Harriette, wife since 1959 of the 22nd
Baron Clinton. The Funeral Service at Chelsea Old Church, London on
Wednesday 2nd December. Service and burial will follow in Ireland on
Friday 4th December at St James' Church, Mallow, Co Cork.

She was b circa 1913 as Violet Margaret (Peggie) Bartholemew, only dau of General Sir William Henry Bartholemew, GCB, CMG, DSO (1877-1962) by his wife the former Violet Alice Penton; and married the then Humphrey Trevelyan, scion of the Trevelyan Baronets (cr 1662), in 1937. Her husband, created a life peer in 1968 and a Knight of the Garter in 1974, died in 1985. She leaves a dau, the Hon Catherine Mary (Kate), and grandchildren, Allan Busse, Jan Busse, and Nicola Busse.

Death of Lady Mairi Bury, daughter of the 7th Marquess of Londonderry

Lady Mairi Bury, nee Vane-Tempest-Stewart, last surviving daughter of the 7th Marquess of Londonderry, KG, MVO, TD, and Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry, died at Mount Stuart, 16 Nov 2009.

Lady Mairi Bury, 87, was married in 1940 to Derek William Charles Keppel, Viscount Bury (1911-1968), eldest son of Walter Keppel, 9th Earl of Albemarle. They were divorced in 1958.


Lady Mairi lived at Mount Stewart, near Newtownards in County Down, Northern Ireland throughout her life. Mount Stewart is now a property of the National Trust. Her nephew is the 9th and present marquess. Lady Mairi's niece is Lady Annabel Goldsmith.

Robert Edward John (Robin) Compton, DL, sometime squire of Newby Hall, near Ripon, North Yorkshire, scion of the Marquesses of Northampton, died 14 Nov 2009, at the age of 87. He was born 11 Jul 1922, son of Edward Robert Francis Compton (1891-1977), A godson of King Edward VII, of Newby Hall, by his 1st wife the former Sylvia Farquharson (of Invercauld).

His elder brother, Alwyne (b 1 May 1919) succeeded as chief of the clan Farquharson of Invercauld and assumed that surname. Robin Compton was educ at Eton; served as Maj Coldstream Guards; was High Sheriff of North Yorks, 1978; married 5 Jul 1951, Ursula Jane Kenyon-Slaney (b 1920), scion of the Barons Kenyon, former wife of (i) Lt-Col David Lindsay, scion of the Earls of Crawford & Balcarres, and (ii) Sir John William Maxwell (Max) Aitken, 2nd Baronet (the disclaimed 2nd Baron Beaverbrook). He leaves issue, (i) James Alwyn Compton, b 11 May, 1953 (heir to the clan chieftainship of Farquharson of Invercauld), married to Lady Tania Frances Meade, a dau of the Earl of Clanwilliam, & (ii) Richard Clephane Compton, b 18 Apr 1957, who succeeded to the Newby estate, married to Ursula Hohler, of that LG family.

Donoughue/Berry marriage

 The marriage took place circa 27 Oct, 2009 between Bernard Donoughue, the Baron Donoughue (born 8 September 1934) a Labour Party politician, academic, businessman and author, and the Hon Lady Berry, widow of the Hon Sir Anthony George Berry, MP (1925-1984), scion of the Viscounts Kemsley, and daughter of the late Raymond Clifford-Turner.

Bernard Donoughue, created a life peer in 1985, was an Opposition Labour spokesman for Energy, Heritage and Treasury matters from 1991 to 1992. In 1997, Tony Blair appointed him a junior minister at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, in which role he served until 1999.  He later joined the Countryside Alliance against New Labour's policy on Hunting with Dogs, and the Foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.

The Hon Lady Berry is the former Sarah Alice Clifford-Turner (born 1939), daughter of Raymond Clifford Clifford-Turner (1906-1995), of Belgravia, by his wife the former Zoe Vachell (1909-1984); and married 1stly, 5 April, 1966, as his second wife, the Hon Anthony Berry (born 12 Feb, 1925), 6th son of the newspaper proprietor, the 1st Viscount Kemsley (1883-1968). Berry was Conservative MP for Enfield Southgate 1964-84, and was killed in the IRA bomb attack on the Grand Hotel. Brighton, 12 Oct 1984.

Sir Ludovic Kennedy dies aged 89

_.Sir Ludovic Kennedy, who died 18th October 2009 aged 89, was best known to television audiences of the 1960s and 1970s as the urbane presenter of such current affairs programmes as Panorama, 24 Hours, Midweek and Tonight, and more recently of the review programme Did you See. Sir Ludovic was a scion of the Marquesses of Ailsa.

_.Sir John Dyke Acland, 16th Baronet (cr 1644), died 26 September,
2009, following a road traffic accident on the previous day. He was
70.

He was born 13 May 1939, the eldest son of Sir Richard Thomas Dyke
Acland, 15th Bt (1906-90), MP for Barnspale 1935-45 & for Gravesend
1947-55, by his wife the former Anne Stella Alford (d 1992), ad was
educated at Clifton and Magdalene College Cambs (BA, MSc), & the Univ
of the West Indies.


He married firstly,1961 (div 2001), Virginia, dau of Roland Forge, of
The Grange, Banoldby-le-Beck, Lincs, and had 2 sons, viz, Dominic Dyke
Acland, b 19 Nov 1962, and Piers Dyke Acland, b 1964, and a dau, Holly
Dyke Acland b 1972; married 2ndly, 2001, Susan, dau of Herbert Hooper.
He is survived by his2nd wife and three children from his first
marriage. The eldest son now inherits the baronetcy.

The abovementioned Eve Pollard married 2ndly, at Islington, 1979, Sir
Nicholas Markley Lloyd (born 9 June 1942) is a British former
newspaper editor and broadcaster. Lloyd graduated from St Edmund Hall,
Oxford. He edited the Sunday People from 1982 to 1983, then moved to
edit the News of the World for a year from 1984, and finally edited
the Daily Express from 1986 until 1995.Lloyd received a knighthood in
the 1990 Prime Minister's Resignation Honours. He presented a
breakfast show on LBC 97.3, a London radio station, from 1997 to 1999.
Since 1996, he has been the chairman of the Brown Lloyd James public

Robert Ralph Baptist Pridden

Georgina Rose Alianore Pridden (née Lethbridge b. 1980), wife of
Benedict John Anthony (Ben) Pridden, (b. 1973), gave birth to a son,
Robert Ralph Baptist, 29 Aug 2009, a brother for Lottie and Taggie.

Ben Pridden is the only son of Mr Robert Pridden, of Exton, Rutland,
by his wife the former Lady Maria Noel (b. 1951), and Georgina is the
eldest daughter of Sir Thomas Periam Hector Noel Lethbridge, 7th
Baronet, (b. 1950), of Newmarket, Suffolk, and of Susan Lady

Maryland, United States).


The Priddens are cousins, albeit several times removed. Georgina's
paternal grandmother, Evelyn Diana (wife of the 6th Baronet) is a

Death of John Wellesley, 47, kinsman of the Duke of Wellington

John Wellesley, who died 29 August, 2009, after a long illness, aged
47, was a scion of the Dukes of Wellington. He was b 1962, son of Maj
Richard Wellesley, MC (1920-84), by his 1st wife the former Ruth Haig
Thomas (b 1924), descended from the Earls of Normanton, dau of Peter
Haig-Thomas, by his wife Lady Alexandra Agar.

John's paternal grandfather was Lt-Col Lord George Wellesley
(1889-1967), a yr son of the 4th Duke of Wellington (1949-1934) and a
brother of the 5th Duke (1876-1941), and of the 7th Duke (1885-1972).


John Wellesley married in 1994 (Sarah) Catriona Grantham Duncan, dau.
of Dr. David Duncan, and he is survived by her and by a son, Thomas
Richard H. Wellesley, who was born in 2000.

Death at 91 of Lord Buxton of Alsa

The Baron Buxton of Alsa, KCVO, MC, DL died 1 September 2009, after a short illness. He was 91.
Life peer Aubrey Leland Oakes Buxton was b 15 Jul 918, scion of the Buxton Baronets, son of Leland William Wilberforce Buxton and Ada Mary Oakes, and was educated at Ampleforth College, Yorkshire and Trinity College, Cambridge. Buxton served in the Royal Artillery in the Second World War, having been decorated with the Military Cross in 1943.From 1958 to 1988, he was a Director of Anglia Television. In 1964, Buxton was Extra Equerry to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and in 1972 High Sheriff of Essex. He became Deputy Lieutenant of Essex in 1975 and held this office until 1985.On 11 May 1978, he was created a life peer as Baron Buxton of Alsa, of Stiffkey in the County of Norfolk. In 1996, Buxton, was invested as a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. Lord Buxton of Alsa has been married twice; to Pamela Mary Birkin, daughter of Sir Henry Birkin, 3rd Baronet on 14 November 1946, and after her death in 1983, to Kathleen Peterson on 16 July 1988. He has six children by his first wife, four daughters and two sons.

Death of Queen's old friend the Countess of Westmorland

Jane Countess of Westmorland, who died 1 September, 2009, was one of the Queen's oldest friends and widow of HM's Master of the Horse, the 15th Earl of Westmorland.

She was born Jane Barbara Findlay, 25 September 1928, a daughter of Lt.-Col. Sir Roland Lewis Findlay, 3rd Baronet, by his wife the former Barbara Joan Garrard.

She married 20 Jun 1950, David Anthony Thomas Fane, 15th Earl of Westmorland, GCVO (1924-1993), son of Lt.-Cdr. Vere Anthony Francis St. Clair Fane, 14th Earl of Westmorland by his wife the former Hon. Diana Lister (see Ribblesdale B, Ext). Her home was The Old Vicarage, Badminton, Gloucestershire.

Her husband was a Lord in Waiting to HM and served as Master of the Horse from 1978 to 1991 when he retired due to ill health.

She is survived by two sons, (i) Anthony David Francis Henry Fane, 16th Earl of Westmorland (b 1 Aug 1951); and (ii) the Hon. Harry St. Clair Fane (b 19 Mar 1953), and (i) the Lady Camilla Diana Fane (b 26 Dec 1957).

David Arthur Wigram Money 1912-2009

David Arthur Wigram Money, who died 17 July 2009 aged 97, was a
favourite accompanist of the versatile opera and concert singer Ian
Wallace; he was also a Daily Telegraph music critic for 35 years. He
was born at Chelsea on January 4 1912, the eldest son of Maj.Gen. Sir
Arthur Wigram Money, KCB, KBE, CSI (d 1951), by his wife the former
Euphemia Mabel Drummond (1881-1964) scion of the Earls of Perth, and
of Beauclerk descent from the Merrie Monarch, Charles II. He married
1938, Diana Stone (d 2007). & had issue, (i) Christopher Money (b

Lord Chesham dies aged 67

The 6th Baron Chesham died 27 August 2009. He was 67. Lord Chesham was b Nicholas Charles Cavendish, 7 Nov 1941; he succeeded to the family honours on the demise of his father, 23 Dec, 1989; mar. (1)4 Nov 1965 (div. 1969) Susan Donne Beauchamp, 1st dau. of Dr Frederick Guy Beauchamp, of the Old House Farm, Fulmer, co. Buckingham, by his wife Hon Susan Silence North (granted the title, rank and precedence of the daughter of a Baron by Royal Warrant in 1947), 2nd dau. of Hon Dudley William John North MC (by his wife Dorothy Donne, dau. of Capt J R Donne), 1st son and heir app. of William Frederick John [North], 12th Baron North; mar. (2)1973 Suzanne Adrienne Byrne, 1st dau. of Alan Gray Byrne, of Rose Bay, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. H leaves issue by his 2nd wife, (i) the Hon Charles Gray Compton Cavendish (b. 11 Nov 1974), who now succeeds to the peerag. He mar. 15 Jun 2002 Sarah Elizabeth Dawson, dau. of Bruce Dawson, of London, and has issue; (ii) the.Hon William George Gray Cavendish (b. 13 Apr 1980)

Edward René David Goldsmith 1928-2009

_Edward René David Goldsmith, environmentalist, was born on November 8, 1928, son of Frank Goldsmith, MP (1878-1967), & was elder brother billionaire financier Sir James Michael Goldsmith (1933-97), & sometime brother-in-law of Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart. Teddy died in Italy, 21 August 2009, aged 80.

He was twice wed. He had 1 son and 2 daus from his first marriage and 2 sons from his 2nd marriage. His daughter, Clio is wife of Mark Roland Shand (b 28 Jun 1951), descended from the Barons Ashcombe, and brother of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.

Wakeham, son of Mr Antony Wakeham, of Bramham, West Yorkshire, by his

Sweeting, of Cotness, East Yorkshire.

Richard Wakeham was one of eight bloodsports supporters convicted on
26/5/05 of violating the Public Order Act Section 5 after invading the
House of Commons during a debate on the Hunting Bill. His maternal
grandmother was the Hon Marcia Agnes Mary Lane Fox, eldest dau of the
1st (and last) Baron Bingley, PC.

Death of artist Flavia Irwin (Lady de Grey)

Lady de Grey, whon died 1 Aug 2009, aged 92, was the artist and
designer Flavia Irwin, and widow of Sir Roger de Grey (1918-95),
painter, sometime President of the Royal Academy, scion of the Barons
Walsingham. She was born Flavia Hatt Irwin, 15 Dec 1916. She is
survived by 2 sons and 1 dau.

Lord Gage married firstly, 1974 the Lady Diana Adrienne Beatty (b. 13 Sep 1952), only dau. of the 2nd Earl Beatty, by his third wife Adelle Dillingham, dau. of M Dillingham, of Oklahoma City, USA, and has sons, (i) the Hon Henry William Gage (b. 25 Jun 1975), and (ii) the Hon Richard David Benedict Gage (b. 21 Feb 1977).

James Howard-Vyse's paternal grandfather, Lt-Gen. Sir Edward Dacre Howard-Vyse, KBE, CB, MC (who d. 1992) married in 1940, Mary Bridget, dau of Colonel the Hon. Claude Willoughby, MVO, and granddaughter of

Life peer Lord Gregson dies aged 85

The Baron Gregson, a life peer since 1975, died in hospital, 12 Aug
2009. He was 85.

John Gregson was b 29 Jan 1924, the son of John Gregson. From 1996 he
was Treasurer of the Built Environment Group. He was also Honorary
Life President of the Labour Finance and Industry Group. Created a
life peer in 1975, he took the title Baron GREGSON, of Stockport in
Greater Manchester.

The Madam Kincaid of Kincaid (nee Arabella Jane Hornell Lennox), wife of Giles Vivian Inglis-Jones, gave birth to a daughter, Kalula Charis Hope, 12 August, 2009, a sister for Angus, Jessie, Isabella and Dominic.

Madam Kincaid of Kincaid succeeded her grandmother in the chieftainship (1999) and matriculated her coat of arms, 26 January 2001 and assumed the name Arabella Jane Kincaid of Kincaid.

Hon David Layton dies

The Hon David Layton, who has died, was the son of the 1st Baron LAYTON (cr UK 1947) and Eleanor Dorothea daughter of Francis Beresford Plumptre OSMASTON. He married
1st 1939 (div 1972) Elizabeth, dau of Rev Robert Miller GRAY, of Hampstead and had two sons: Jonathan Francis b 1942 married with two sons and a dau; and Mark Oliver b 1944 and unmarried (according to Debrett’s but note Burke’s has him married to Penelope HAMILTON, no issue); and a dau Hilary Ruth b 1947 and unmarried. David Layton married 2nd 1972 Joy PARKINSON. He was heir presumptive to his nephew, the 3rd Baron, a place now taken by his eldest son. His younger brother survives him. He is the Hon Christopher Walter LAYTON b 1929 and thrice married with one son (John Stephen b 1955, unm) and four daus. He and his son occupy the final 4th and 5th
positions in the line of succession to the barony.

She m 2ndly 1974 Robert E J PHILIPPI son of Col George Philippi of Madrid and had another son (James Jeremy George PHILIPPI b 1975 and married with a son). Her eldest son now takes his mother's place as co-heir to Baroness Willoughby de Eresby (b 1934, unm), the other co-heir being Sir George John Aird 4th Bt (b 1940, married with a son (m 2007) and two daus (one of whom is married with 2 daus)). It is between these two and their heirs that any future abeyance will have to be terminated.

Sir Edward Archdale, 3rd Baronet, dies

Captain Sir Edward Folmer Archdale, 3rd Baronet, of Riversdale (Co. Fermanagh),
on Friday 31st July after a long illness, aged 87 years. Mentioned in
Dispatches in 1940.—(HMS Sabre, Dunkirk) and awarded the DSC in 1943
(HMS Unbroken, Mediterranean petrols 1942-43). Survived by two
children and three grandchildren. Service to be held at 2 p.m. on
Thursday 13th August at St. Mary's Church, Caterham, Surrey CR3 5RA.

Major Victor Ronald Seely, who has died aged 68 was a scion of the Seely Baronets.

He is the son of Maj Sir Victor Basil John SEELY 4th Bt (1900-80) and
his 3rd wife Mary Frances Margaret dau of William Ronald COLLINS of
South Kensington. He married 1972 Annette Bruce dau of Lt-Col J. A. D.
McEWEN, of Salperton House, Salperton, Cheltenham and had an only son
WILLIAM VICTOR CONWAY b 16 Sept 1983 (unm), who succeeds his father as
the present 5th Bt's heir presumptive.

Paulette Howard-Johnston 1904-2009

Mrs Paulette Howard-Johnston (nee Helleu), who has died aged 104, was the dau of the French artist Paul Helleu and Alice Guerin. She
married in 1955, as his 3rd wife, Rear-Admiral Clarence Dinsmore
"Johnny" Howard-Johnston CB DSO DSC. He was the son of John Howard-
Johnston and Countess Pierre de Breuil de St Germain and had married
1stly Lady Alexandra Henrietta Louisa HAIG, eldest dau of FM 1st Earl
Haig & Hon Dorothy Maud dau of 3rd Baron Vivian. (The late Duchess of
Gloucester and the present Duke of Edinburgh stood sponsors to their
elder and younger sons respectively.)

Mrs Howard-Johnston was a Chevalier of the Légion d' honneur and an
Officier des Arts et des Lettres.
