Ian Anthony Balding, LVO 1938-2026

Ian Anthony Balding, LVO, the racehorse trainer, died 2 January, 2026. He was 87.

He was born 7 November, 1938, son of Capt Gerald Matthews Balding (1903-1957), of Weyhill House, Andover, by his wife the former Eleanor Hoagland (1915-1985); and married 15 August, 1969, Emma Alice Mary Hastings-Bass (born 28 January, 1949), scion of the Earls of Huntingdon. She was raised to the rank of an Earl's daughter in 1993, following the succession to the Earldom of Huntingdon of her brother.

Balding was a racehorse trainer from 1964 to 2002 and was trainer to HM Queen Elizabeth II, 1964-1999. He was appointed LVO in 1992.

He is survived by Lady Emma and a son, Andrew (born 29 December, 1972), and a daughter Clare, the broadcaster and journalist (born 29 January, 1971).
