7th Baron Skelmersdale 1945-2018

_. Lord Skelmersdale, the 7th Baron, who has died aged 73, was. deputy Speaker of the House of Lords, and a junior minister in Conservative governments.

He was born the Hon Roger Bootle-Wilbraham, 2 April, 1945, son of the 6th Baron Skelmersdale (1896-1973) by his wife, the former Ann Quilter (died 1974), and succeeded to the peerage, created in 1828, upon his father’s death, 21 July, 1973.

Lord Skelmersdale served as a Lord-in-Waiting (Government Whip) in the House of Lords 1981-86; was Parliamentary Under Secretary: Dept of Employment 1986-87, Dept of Health & Social Security 1987-88, Dept of Social Security 1988-89, Northern Ireland Office, 1989-90; Deputy Chairman of Committees, House of Lords 1991; Deputy Speaker 1996; elected to the Lords as a Conservative hereditary peer, 1999.

Lord Skelmersale married in 1972, Christine Joan Morgan, by whom he had issue.

The peerage now devolves upon his Lordship’s son, the Hon Andrew Bootle-Wilbraham, who was born 9 August, 1977.
