Sir Paul Douglas Nicholson, KCVO, DL 1938-2025

 Sir Paul Douglas Nicholson, KCVO, DL who has died aged 86, was a former Lord Lieutenant of County Durham.

Nicholson was a businessman and industrialist, the Cambridge-educated qualified chartered accountant was best known as chairman of the Sunderland brewery, the Vaux Group, from 1976 only resigning after the board voted for its closure in 1999, having first joined the company in 1965. He played a prominent role in the wider business community in the North East, chairing the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation throughout its 11-year existence until 1998, having also served as chairman of the Northern Region of the CBI, from 1977 to 79.

Nicholson was knighted in 1993 for, “services to industry and the public in North East England”, and he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO), in 2011.Having served as High Sheriff of County Durham in 1980, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant, the then Queen’s representative in the county, in 1987, succeeding David Grant. He held the post until his 75th birthday in 2013, when current Lord Lieutenant, Sue Snowdon, succeeded him.

He was born 7 March, 1938, eldest of the five sons of Frank Douglas Nicholson, DL, JP (who died 1984), and his wife the former Pauline Lawson-Tancred (1916-2010), scion of the baronets of that name, and married 18 July, 1970, Sarah Bacon (born 1 June, 1947), daughter of Sir Edmund Castell Bacon, 13th/14th Baronet, KG (1903-1982), and his wife the former Priscilla Dora Ponsonby (1913-2000), scion of the Ponsonby baronets, by whom he had issue, a daughter, Lucy (born 1972).
