_. Susan Mary Geraldine Batten [nee Portal], who died 5 October, 2019, was a scion of the Portal family of baronets, and an aunt of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby.
She was born in 1931, the daughter of Lieutenant-Col Gervase Edward Portal [1890-1961], by his wife the former Iris Mary Butler [1905-2002], daughter of Sir Montagu Butler, KCSI, CB, CIE, CVO, CBE [1873-1952].
She married in 1954, James Macdonald Batten, son of Gordon James Batten, MBE, by whom she had issue.
