_. Brigadier Sir Nicholas Somerville, Kt, CBE, who died 9 September, 2018, aged 94, was a survivor of the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, and was descended from the Barons Fermoy.
Sir Nicholas was closely related to the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex. His mother was a first cousin of the 4th Baron Fermoy, who was father of the Hon Frances Shand Kydd, mother of Diana, Princess of Wales.
He was born 16 January, 1924, son of Brigadier Desmond Henry Sykes Somerville, CBE, MC, by his wife the former Moira Burke Roche, and was educated at Winchester.
Career: Commissioned, The South Wales Borderers, 24th Regiment 1943; served in France and Germany, D-Day - VE Day 1944-45 (mentioned in Despatches 1945); BAOR, War Office FARELF, Aden 1967-68 (Despatches 1968); Directing Staff, JSSC 1967-69; Commandant, Junior Div, Staff College, 1969-72; Director of Army Recruiting 1973-75; retired from the Army in 1978; Managing Director, Saladin Security Ltd 1981-84.
He was appointed CBE in 1975, and knighted in 1985.
Sir Nicholas married in 1951, Jenifer Dorothea Nash, by whom he had one son, Robin, and two daughters, Philippa and Penelope.
A Thanksgiving Service will take place at All Saints' Church, Odiham, Hampshire, Thursday 29 November, 2018.
