Sir (William) Jonathan Frederick North, 2nd Baronet 1931-2018

_.Sir (William) Jonathan Frederick North, 2nd Baronet, died 25 February, 2018.

He was born 6 February, 1931, a sscion of the Earls of Guilford, son of the Hon John Montagu William North, and succeeded to the baronetcy of his maternal grandfather, Sir William Norton Hicking, under the terms of a special remainder, in 1947; married 1956, Sara Virginia, daughter of Air Chief Marshal Sir (James) Donald Innes Hardman, GBE, KCB, by whom he had issue.

Sir Jonathan is succeeded by his son, Jeremy William Francis North, who was born 5 May, 1960.

_. Princess Ekaterina of Hanover (nee Malysheva) wife of HRH Prince Ernst August Andreas Philipp Constantin Maximilian Rolf Stephan Ludwig Rudolph of Hanover, Prince of Gt Britain and Ireland [b 19 July, 1983], gave birth to a daughter, Elisabeth, 22 February, 2018.

Prince Ernst August is the elder son of HRH Prince Ernst August of Hanover, Duke of Brunswick-Luneberg, Prince of Gt Britain & Ireland [b 26 Feb, 1954], by his first wife the former Chantal Hochuli [b 2 Jun 1955], & Ekaterina Igorieva Malysheva [b Moscow, 1 July, 1986], daughter of Igor Malyshev by his wife Svetlana.

Prince Ernst August (b 1954) is a male line descendant of King George III, and is head of the Royal House of Hanover and in whom is vested the right to petition for the restoration of the Dukedom of Cumberland and Teviotdale [created in 1799, and suspended under the terms of the Titles Deprivations Act, 1917].

Lady Rosemary Steel 1935-2018

__. The Lady Rosemary Steel, who died 18 February, 2018, aged 82, was a scion of the Earls of Clarendon.

She was posthumous daughter of George Herbert Arthur Edward Hyde VILLIERS (1906-35), styled Lord Hyde, s of 6th Earl of Clarendon (1877-1955), and Hon Marion Feodorovna Louise GLYN (1900-70), d of 4th Baron WOLVERTON (1863-1932) and Lady Edith Amelia Ward (1872-1956, d of 1st Earl of DUDLEY (1817-85))).

She m Richard Hugh Jordan s of Sir Christopher Eden STEEL GCMG MVO (1903-73) and Catherine (1907-85) d of Lt-Gen Sir (George) Sidney CLIVE GCVO KCB CMG DSO (1874-1959) by his wife a scion of the BUXTON Bts, and had two sons and a dau.

 A funeral service will be held at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Northleach, 19 March, 2018.

He was s of Thomas Dennis READETT-BAYLEY (1906-56), whom he succeeded as head of the gentry family of that name formerly of Lenton Abbey, and (Florence) Diana (1911-96) d of William Norman BISSILL (1871-1936) by his 1903 m (reg Q4 Notthinghamshire) to Florence Rippon BROCKTON (1876-1960). He m c1962 (reg Q1 Nottinghamshire) Diana J TAYLOR (b c1933 reg Q1 Derbyshire) d of _ TAYLOR & _ BROWN, and had issue, two daughters.

Michael Edmund Heathcote (1931-2018)

__. Capt Michael Edmund Heathcote, who died 15 February, 2018, aged 86, was a scion of the Heathcote baronets (cr GB 1733); descended from Rev Samuel Heathcote 3rd son of the 3rd Baronet. 

He married 1959 Jean Hamilton-Miller and had issue Kathryn Gay b 1961, Georgina Anne b 1961 (twin) and Jenny Louise b 1964.  The son of Kathryn mentioned in Debretts, Richard David Michael b 1989 is not mentioned in the notice so perhaps has predeceased.

The funeral takes at St. Mary’s Church, Frensham, Surrey, 14 March 2018.

He was born in 1929, son of Commander Francis Paul Orlando Bridgeman, RN (1888-1930), by his wife the former Alice Kleinwort (d 1979), scion of the Kleinwort baronets. He married in 1965, Mrs Rosemarie Ingrams, daughter of Willis Tomlinson. No issue of the marriage.

James Underwood is the elder son of John Jeremy Campbell Underwood who married in 1979, Victoria Angela Henderson b 1956 a scion of the Barons FARINGDON being the daughter of Adrian Donald Henderson (1922 - 1974) son of Hon Alec Puleston Henderson 2nd son of the 1st Baron.

Obituary: Charles Wingfield


The 3rd (and last) Viscount Alanbrooke 1932-2018

_. The 3rd Viscount Alanbrooke died 10 January, 2018. He was aged 85.

Lord Alanbrooke was the last holder of the title, and a younger son of Field Marshal the 1st Viscount, who was sometime Chief of the Imperial General Staff during the Second World War.

Harold Victor Alan Brooke was born 24 Nov, 1932, son of the 1st Viscount (1883-1963) by his second wife, the former Benita Blanche Pelly, scion of the Pelly Bts, and succeeded to the family honours upon the death of his elder half-brother, the 2nd Viscount, 19 Dec, 1972.

Viscount Alanbrooke was unmarried, and his peerages now become extinct.

The funeral takes place on Monday 26 February, 2018, at St Eligius Church, Arborfield Green.

Sir Brian Patrick McMahon, 8th Baronet 1942-2018

_. Sir Brian McMahon, 8th Baronet, died 30 January, 2018, at his home in South Africa.

Brian Patrick McMahon was born 9 June, 1942, the elder son of Sir William Patrick McMahon, 7th Baronet [1900-1977], by his wife the former Ruth Stella Kenyon-Slaney [1909-82], scion of the Barons Kenyon.

He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father, 5 January, 1977.

Sir Brian married in 1981 [divorced 1991], Kathleen Joan Hopwood. No issue of the marriage.

Sir Brian was predeceased by his younger brother, and heir presumptive, Shaun Desmond McMahon, and the title, created in 1817, now passes to a nephew, Patrick John Westropp McMahon, who was born 7 February, 1988.

She was the former Jennifer Bailey Southwell, daughter of Bailey Southwell of Crocodile Leap Farm, Olivenhourpoort, South Africa, and married the then Hon Robin Rathmore Plunket, 8 Nov, 1951. Her husband was a younger son of the 6th Baron Plunket (1899-1938), by his wife the former Dorothe Mabel Lewis. Her husband succeeded his brother in the peerage, 28 May, 1975, and died 16 Nov, 2013, when he was succeeded by his younger brother, Shaun, the present peer.

 Funeral at St Margaret's, Westminster on Monday 5th February 2018.

_. The Dowager Marchioness of Normanby, who died 15 January, 2018, aged 97, was the widow of the 4th Marquis of Normanby, KG, CBE (1912-94), and was a scion of the Barons Moyne.

She was born the Hon Grania Maeve Rosaura Guinness, 14 Apr, 1920, daughter of the 1st Baron Moyne (1880-1944), by his wife the former Lady Evelyn Erskine, daughter of the 14th Earl of Buchan, and married 10 Feb 1951, Oswald Phipps, 4th Marquis of Normanby, sometime Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, by whom she had issue, two sons and five daughters. The elder son, Constantine, born in 1954, is the 5th Marquis.

Requiem Mass to be held at St Hedda’s RC Church, Egton Bridge, near Whitby, North Yorkshire at 12 noon on Wednesday 24th January, 2018.

Baroness Ross of Marnock 1923-2018

 The Baroness Ross of Marnock, died 4 January, 2018, aged 94.

The former Elizabeth Jane Elma Aitkenhead was born 6 March, 1923, daughter of J. Aitkenhead, of Ayr, and married in 1948, William Ross (born 7 April, 1911), later  Baron Ross of Marnock, MBE, PC, who was the longest serving Secretary of State for Scotland, holding office from 1964–1970 and again from 1974–1976, throughout the premiership of Sir Harold Wilson.

Her husband represented Kilmarnock until the 1979 general election, when he was created a life peer as Baron Ross of Marnock, of Kilmarnock in the District of Kilmarnock and Loudoun.

She was widowed, 10 June, 1988. She leaves two daughters.

Michael John Hare was born 25 January, 1938, son of the 1st Viscount Blakenham (1911-82), by his wife the former Hon Beryl Nancy Pearson (1908-94), scion of the Viscounts Cowdray; married 12 Jan 1965, his cousin, Marcia Persephone Hare, a granddaughter of the 4th Earl of Listowel, by whom he had issue.

Lord Blakenham is succeeded in the viscountcy by his only son, the Hon Caspar Hare (b 8 Apr, 1972).

_.The Baroness Hemingford, OBE, who died 8 January, 2018, aged 84, was the wife of the 3rd Baron Hemingford (b 1934), of Hemingford Abbots, Huntingdon.

She was the former Jennifer Mary Toresen Bailey, daughter of Frederick William Bailey, of Kent Rd, Harrogate, and married then then Hon (Dennis) Nicholas Herbert in 1958. He succeeded to the peerage (cr 1943) in 1982.

Lady Hemingford leaves a son and three daughters, and twelve grandchildren.

Jillian Sarah Fortescue (c1942-2018)

_. Jillian Sarah Fortescue (nee Valpy), who died 5 January, 2018, aged 75, was the first wife of Sir David Alwyn Gore-Booth, KCMG, KCVO (1943-2004), diplomat, scion of the Gore-Booth baronets.

She was the former Jillian Sarah Valpy, younger daughter of James Wyatt Valpy, and married David Gore-Booth in 1964. They divorced in 1970. From the marriage she leaves a son, Paul Wyatt Julian Gore-Booth, who was b. 1968.

From a later marriage to ____Fortescue, she leaves a son, James.

The engagement was announced 5 January, 2018, between Jack Alexander Bodley Orr-Ewing (born 1987), scion of the Orr Ewing baronets, younger son of the Hon Robert James Orr-Ewing (b 1953), of Holland Park, London, by his wife the former Susannah Scott, daughter of Mark Bodley Scott, & Emma Clare McDowell, eldest daughter of Mr Christopher McDowell, of Berkhamsted, and Mrs Janey McDowell, of Henley-on-Thames.

Jack Orr-Ewing is a grandson of the Baron Orr-Ewing, OBE, life peer.

Mary Christine Hambro (died 2018)

_. Mary Christine Hambro, who died 3 January, 2018, was the third wife, and widow of Richard Alexander Hambro (1946-2009), scion of the eponymous landed banking family.

It was as Mary Briggs that in 1993 she wed Richard Hambro, second son of Jocelyn Olaf Hambro (1919-94), by his 1st wife the former Ann Silvia Muir (d 1972). He died 25 April, 2009.

Richard Hambro had married 1stly, 1973 (div 1982), the Hon Charlotte Clementine Soames (b 17 Jul 1954, who married 2nd 15 Apr 1989, the 3rd Earl Peel), dau of the Baron Soames (life peer) (1920-87), by his wife the former Mary Spencer-Churchill (b 15 Sept 1922), dau of the Rt Hon Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965); married 2ndly, 1984 (div 1992), Juliet Mary Elizabeth Harvey, daughter of Major Thomas Cockayne Harvey by his wife the former Lady Katharine Mary Coke, dau of the Earl of Leicester.

__. Victoria Hanbury (nee Bigge), wife of George Christopher Osgood Hanbury {b 6 Nov, 1987}, scion of that landed family,
gave birth to a son, Ned William Hunter Osgood, 2 January, 2018.

George Hanbury is the son of Maj Christopher Osgood Philip Hanbury (b 1944), of Shefford Woodlands, Berkshire, by his wife the former Bridget Anne Birch, & Victoria Hanbury is a daughter of Mr & Mrs Peter Bigge, of Whorlton, co Durham.

Hon Mrs Francis Hepburne Scott (d 2017)

_. The Hon Mrs Francis Hepburne Scott, who died 31 December, 2017, aged 92, was the widow of the Hon Francis Hepburne Scott, MC, a brother of the 10th Lord Polwarth.

She was the former Marjorie Hamilton Ross, daughter of Horatio John Ross (and descended from the Lighton baronets), and married in 1946. She leaves issue.

A Service of Thanksgiving will be held at Lilliesleaf  Kirk, Monday 5 Feb, 2018.

Major-General Charles Alexander Ramsay 1936-2017

_. Major General Charles Ramsay, late the Royal Scots Greys and the Queen's Body Guard for Scotland, scion of the Ramsay baronets (cr 1806), died 31 December, 2017, aged 81.

He served in the Royal Scots Greys; Major General 1984; member of the Queen's Body Guard for Scotland (Royal Company of Archers), &c.

Charles Alexander Ramsay was born 12 Oct, 1936, the second son of Admiral Sir Bertram Home Ramsay, KCB, KBE, MVO (1883-1945), by his wife the former Margaret Helen Menzies.

His father was Naval Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Expeditionary Force, who was killed in an aeroplane accident in France, 2 Jan, 1942.

He married 1 Aug, 1967, the Hon Mary Margaret Hastings MacAndrew (b 1942), daughter of the 1st Baron MacAndrew, by his second wife the former Mona Mitchell. He leaves a widow and two sons, William and Charles, and two daughters, Rowena and Camilla.
