 Annette Christian Mostyn (née Garrick), died 20 October, 2022. She was 77.

She was born in 1945, a daughter of Major Miles Alfred Christian Garrick (1908-78), and his wife the former Winnyfred Anne Askew; and married 10 Sept, 1966, Richard Jan Mostyn (1942-2002), son of Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Mostyn (formerly Tuzinkiewicz) (1896-1969), and his wife the former Hermione Mary Josephine Mostyn (1906-1999), scion of the Mostyn baronets, by whom she had issue, three daughters, Suki (born 1968), Melissa (born 1970) and Chloe (born 1975).

The Countess of Burford (nee Sarah Davenport), wife of the Earl of Burford, gave birth to a daughter, Lady Thea Eirys Elisabetta de Vere Beauclerk, 28 October, 2022.

Charles Francis Topham de Vere Beauclerk, styled Earl of Burford (born 22 February, 1965), married firstly, 29 Dec 1994 Louise Ann Beatrice Fiona Robey, 1st daughter of Col Malcolm Vernon Robey, and has issue, a son, the Hon James Malcolm Aubrey Edward de Vere Beauclerk, styled Lord Vere of Hanworth (who was born 2 August 1995). He married 2ndly, in 2017, Sarah Davenport.

The Earl of Burford is the son and heir of the 14th Duke of St Albans (born 19 January, 1939), and his first wife the former Rosemary Frances Scoones.

Colonel Thomas Armitage Hall, CVO, OBE 1928-2022

 Colonel Thomas Armitage Hall, CVO, OBE, died 12 October, 2022. He was 94. 

Colonel Tom Hall, who has died aged 94, played a prominent role in the development of the French Alpine resort of Méribel as a favoured destination for British skiers. He was also Lieutenant of the Gentlemen at Arms, the sovereign’s ceremonial bodyguard, and an entrepreneur in the field of international language schools.

Thomas Armitage Hall was born 13 April, 1928, the only child of Athelstan Argyle Hall (1894-1963), and his wife the former Nancy Armitage Dyson (1901-86); and married 24 February, 1954, Marie Antoinette Hornby (born 9 Nov, 1932, died 2020), scion of that landed gentry family, daughter of Sir Roger Antony Hornby (1904-1987), and his wife the former Lady Veronica Brenda Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood (1910-1971), daughter of the 3rd Marquess of Dufferin & Ava (1875-1930), by whom he had two sons, Edward and John, and four daughters, Jane, Annabel, Lucy and Catherine.

In 1980 Hall had become a member of Her Majesty’s Body Guard of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms – retired officers who attend the sovereign at state events and garden parties. He was promoted in 1994 to Lieutenant of the Gentlemen (effectively commanding officer, their honorary Captain being the government’s chief whip in the House of Lords), retiring on his seventieth birthday in 1998. He was also chairman from 1990 to 1996 of the Cavalry & Guards Club, whose Piccadilly freehold he had helped secure some years earlier in a tough negotiation with the property developer Elliot Bernerd.

He was appointed OBE in 1966 and CVO on retirement from the Gentlemen at Arms, Hall was high sheriff of Oxfordshire in 1981-2.

 Rosemary Elizabeth Hazel Bell (née Sandford), died 2 October, 2022, aged 95.

She was a scion of the Sandford landed gentry family, daughter of Major Humphrey Sandford (1887-1988), head of that family, and his wife the former Marjorie Travers Pickmere (1893-1970); and married in 1948, John Frederick Norman Bell (1918-1997), daughter of Norman Mindham Bell (1892-1959), of Northampton, and his wife the former Florence Cox, by whom she had two sons and a daughter.

Soames, born 12 Feb, 1949, is a grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, and the son of Christopher Soames, life peer as Baron Soames (1920-1987), and his wife the former Mary Spencer-Churchill, LG (1922-2014), scion of the Dukes of Marlborough, daughter of Sir Winston Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, DL, FRS, RA (1874-1965), and his wife the former Clementine Hozier, GBE (1885-1977).

Lord Soames of Fletching has been twice wed; 1stly in 1981, Catherine Weatherall, descended from the Keswick landed family, sister of Isobel, Countess of Strathmore & Kinghorne; and married 2ndly, 1993, Serena Mary Smith (born 1959), scion of the Smith landed gentry family, daughter of Sir John Lindsay Eric Smith (1923-2007), and his wife the former Christian Margaret Carnegy (born 1927).

Lord Soames of Fletching has a son, Harry (born 1985), from his first marriage, and from his second marriage, a son, Christopher (born 2001), and Isabella (born 1996).
