The alleged dispute between the Duchess of Cambridge and the Marchioness of Cholmondeley: some background information

_. The Press report rumours of a rift between the Duchess of Cambridge and her Norfolk neighbour the Marchioness of Cholmondeley.

The Marchioness, formerly the model Rose Hanbury, 35, has family ties and numerous links to the Royal House of Windsor.

(Sarah) Rose Hanbury was born 15 March, 1984, a daughter of Timothy James Hanbury (born 26 September, 1952) of Wembury, Devon, and his wife, the former Emma Longman (who was born in 1959).

Rose’s father, a member of the Hanbury landed gentry family, is a cousin of the Queen, albeit several times removed, in his descent from his great-great-great-grandfather, Abel Smith, of Woodhall Park, Hertfordshire. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was a descendant of Abel Smith.

The Marchioness of Cholmondeley is also closely linked to the beautiful Freda Dudley Ward, for many years the mistress of the Duke of Cambridge’s great-great uncle, the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor. Rose’s grandmother was the former Sarah Birkin, a cousin of Freda Dudley Ward, who was so cruelly dumped by the heir to the throne in the early 1930s after an affair which had lasted since the closing days of the First World War.

Rose’s mother Emma Longman is a younger sister of Caroline Longman, a goddaughter of the Queen, and was romantically linked, if only in the tabloid press, with the young Prince Charles, in the early 1970s.

The Longman girls were daughters of publisher Mark Longman, who died in 1972, and his wife, the former Lady Elizabeth Mary Lambart (1924-2016), a goddaughter of Queen Mary and the late Princess Royal, and a childhood playmate of the young Princess Elizabeth and one of her bridesmaids on her marriage to the Duke of Edinburgh in 1947.

The Royal Family’s close links with the Lambart family goes back a century. Lady Elizabeth’s father, the 10th Earl of Cavan, was Chief of Staff to the Duke of York (later King George VI) on his tour of Australia in 1927. Cavan’s wife, the former Hon Hester Joan Mulholland, was Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Mary, Countess of Harewood, and Princess Royal from 1918-22, and then was Lady-in-Waiting to the the young Duchess of York (later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother) from 1923. The Countess of Cavan accompanied the Duchess of York to Australia as her Lady-in-Waiting in 1927.

Rose Hanbury married in 2009, David George Philip Cholmondeley, 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, and they have twin sons, Alexander, styled Earl of Rocksavage, and Lord Oliver Cholmondeley, who were born 12 October, 2009, and a daughter, Lady Iris Cholmondeley, who was born in 2016.

The Marquess of Cholmondeley is the Hereditary Lord Great Chamberlain of England, acting for the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, and is to be seen every year greeting Her Majesty when she arrives at the State Opening of Parliament.

The Marquess also has blood ties to the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex. George, 5th Marquess of Cholmondeley, grandfather of the current peer, was a cousin, several times removed of Cynthia, Countess Spencer, grandmother of Diana, Princess of Wales, and both families will have met socially on many occasions down the years.

Both David Cholmondeley and Prince William have a common ancestor in the 6th Earl of Cardigan.
