9th Earl of Ilchester (1920-2006)

The Earl of Ilchester, died at Tunbridge Wells, 2 July, 2006. He was aged 86. He was 9th Earl (cr 1756), and Baron Ilchester and Ilchester, Somerset, Baron Strangways of Woodsford Strangways, Dorset (cr 1741), Baron Ilchester and Stavordale of Redlynch, Somerset (1747). Maurice Vivian de Touffreville Fox-Strangways was b. 1 April, 1920, son of the 8th Earl of Ilchester by his wife Laure Georgine Emilie (d. 1970), daughter of Evanghelos Georgios Mazaraki, sometime Treasurer of the Suez Canal Co., and was educated at Kingsbridge School. Career:-> served in the RAF, 1936-76 (Group Captain); CEng, MRAeS, FINucE (Pres 1982-84); Vice Chairman, Biggin Hill Airport Consultative Committee, 1976-95; Director 1982-90, Vice Chairman 1985-86 Nottingham Building Society; Member House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology, 1984-89; President, Society of Engineers, 1974 (Hon FSE 1989); President, Biggin Hill Br, 1973-, SE Area, 1978-2003, Royal Air Force Assoc; President Darent River Preservation Soc, 1993-2003; President, Grant Maintained Schools Foundations, 1991-99; Chairman of the Governors of Cannock School, 1978-92; Kent and Downs Regional Newspaper Society, 1994-95; President, 285 Squadron, ATC, 1973-2000, 2427 Squadron, ATC, from 1977; succeeded to the peerages on the death of his father, 4 Oct, 1970 &c. He married in 1941, Diana Mary Elizabeth (President of the WAAF Assoc), eld daughter of George Frederick Simpson, of Cassington, Oxfordshire, by whom he had no issue. The peerages now devolve upon his Lordship's nephew, Robin Maurice Fox-Strangways, b. 2 Sept, 1942. Memorial Service at St Mary's, Westerham, 25 July, 2006
